How To Get From Cairns To Ayers Rock?

Sat Jun 23, 2007 2:50 am

Hello!

I'm planning a trip to Australia. My problem is that I'm not really used to online booking systems. I want to go from Cairns to Ayers Rock. The only connection I found by air is a flight with Quantas which would cost around 300 Euros oneway! Are there cheaper fares to be found anywhere? Are there other carriers that fly to a destination near Ayers rock? Which destination aerodrome should I search for?
I hope some Australian or other travel experienced A-nutters can help me.

Thanks for any information in advance.

From CNS to AYQ, i'm afraid QF is probably your only option (hence why the fares are high). QF is the only major airline to fly to AYQ, and coming from the east coast, only from MEL, SYD or CNS. I guess you could look at CNS-SYD-AYQ, although the cost would probably be the same (if not more), and would most likely require a night stop in SYD, as the AYQ flights leave early.

The only airport near AYQ, is ASP (at least 2-3 hours drive), but again, only QF flies there, and from the east coast, only from MEL, SYD and BNE.

I think QF from CNS to AYQ is your best option.

Just guessing, but I'd say most folks outside of Australia would not recognize the name Uluru, although the QF website does list it (in parentheses) aside the Ayers Rock city name.

Regardless, pay the 300 euros, it's worth the cost.

Yeah if you average 150 - 225kmh, its a 450km drive.  Wink

Qantaslink fly 717's CNS - AYQ with no ife once daily.
A connection in ASP from cairns would mean an overnight stop or a 4 hour stop on the return flight

Qantas have one flight daily with a 737 direct, has ife.

When booking on the qantas website click on the flight number when selecting times, this will tell you the aircraft type and operator, none of the qantaslink services have ife, but prices of flights are the same.

Flight time is around 2 3/4 hours.

Qantaslink flys ayq to asp usually under $150AUS.
Word is virginblue are going to return services to ASP, could be worth waiting on an announcment. doubt they will be flying ASP-CNS, but could provide a cheeper connection via SYD or BNE.

Question: if there is no airport nearby then why does it have an airport code?

Couldn't you take advantage of one of those ticket deals where when you book the international flight you get an internal flight free? Have a word with Qantas and see if they have such a deal available.

I know when I went (about 10 years ago) I got such a deal. Internal flights are a complete rip-off. You might even consider a bus between the two places.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

The other option is to buy a return ticket: full service carriers have a bivarre habit of occasionly charging more for a one-way ticket than they do for a return ticket! I would love to hear someone from airline topbrass try to explain the logice behind that one! Then, quite simply, don't show up to your return flight. People shouldn't really do it, but it is such a widespread practice that the airline hardly ever chase anybody up for the unpaid money.

Sorry, what I was meaning was that the only other airport near Ayers Rock AIRPORT, was ASP. Wasn't referring to the rock itself (hence why i typed it in as AYQ).

Unfortunately there no such thing as a return fare for domestic travel here If you enquire about a return fare you will just get two one way fares added together.

I took the CNS-AYQ flight when I went to Australia back in 2004. I'm not sure what the price was, but the views as you fly into AYQ are quite impressive! That also happened to be my only 737-400 flight so far.
