Does Anybody Like 3x3 Seating?

Wed Jul 04, 2007 10:54 pm

When I fly, I go out of my way to not have a 3x3 seated airplane. I will even choose to fly on an RJ over a 737 anyday, just so that I am not stuck in my window seat the entire trip. Any thoughts?

Must be hard finding a transcon RJ flight.

Sounds like you choose to be stuck in a window seat. Take an aisle or middle seat and solve your problem. Buy a business class seat and solve your problem.

Not really cost effective for airlines to remove a third of their economy seats without hiking fares accordingly.

It doesn't really bother me....

I usually take the window seats on shorter flights, but on longer flights, I'll take the aisle.

Of course, if you travel non-rev, you sometimes get stuck with whats left, but that's the price you pay.

Doesn't bother me at all...I'll take a ride on a 3-3 737/757/319 any day over a 2-2 RJ. I don't feel stuck in the window seat when all I have to do is politely ask the people next to me to let me out. If they're sleeping, then let the airplane gymnastics begin!

The 3/3 doesn't bother me as long as I'm not in the middle. I love Embraer for this, eliminating that often despised middle seat.

I dont like 3-3 either... but in Australia and Europe where I was living there is little choice - with most trips on 737s and A320/319/321's... Ah well.

I would much rather the 2-2 or 2-3 config or even better a 767 on domestic hop here in AUS. I always try and get on the QF 767 domestic if I can avoid the 737- it feels cooler and I love the fact that being on the aisle in the middle seciton generally means the person next to me will most of the time be with the person on the other aisle - hence never having to get up and more often than not - on these routes if not full, the middle seat ois left empty with couples opting to the side sections.

That's always why I like VS's premium Econ layout of 2-3-2 as opposed to BA's 2-4-2 as if the aisle seat is taken in the middle section, I will select the aisle on the other side of the middle - and the middle seat is generally then left empty!

checkmark ...exactly what I do. I'm still trying to get somebody to give me a good reason why the window seat is so important...once you get up there, it's really quite, quite boring. And when you're near the ground, in a plane that is small enough to be single aisle, you can usually see just about the same stuff from the aisle as you can from the window. There is the whole sleeping argument, but if you need to rely on a plane to sleep, you need to more accurately find out your sleep number.

And if the flight's booked very lightly, the passengers will space themselves throughout the cabin (unless told to do otherwise), allowing us extra tall folks to remove our shoes, turn up the armrests and stretch out. I love the 737s-got to stretch out on a DL 737NG on a Christmas holiday ATL-TUS trip. Expected a full flight-by the time the cabin door closed there were maybe one or two passengers in each row!

It is not if I like it or not but if there is nothing else, what can you do?  Smile

There are airlines that only offer 3 x 3 seats and some 2 x 2 seaters are really some pain in the a$$.  Smile

Anyway as long as I have my window seat I am happy!

Most flights with 3x3 seating are under 5/6 hours, so if I have the window seat, I can usually hold off going to the bathroom for that long with no problems. However, I dislike the B747 for the very reason that it does have 3x4x3 seating, and on a 10 hour plus flight, it's just too much of a hassle to ask 2 people (or try to climb over them while they are sleeping) when you do need to go to the lav.

Not a fan of 3X3 seating. Thankfully I never have been stuck in the middle seat. There's been a few occasions when I've had an entire row to myself, which isn't bad at all. On a short flight (2 hours or less), doesn't bother me too much, as I usually don't have to get up to go to the lav. But when it comes to a transcon, I've reached the point where I don't like sitting in coach on a narrowbody. I'll spend the extra  dollarsign  to buy/upgrade to First/Business on a transcon.

I can't stand the window seat with 3-3 either. It's just too damn claustrophobic. But I'll deal with it.

777 is way better because you have a 1/3 better chance of not getting a window.

The one time I got to fly on one, it was great!

I totally agree!!

I don't care about the arrangement, if I have my window seat and some food, I'll be fine!!

Nope...

checkmark  And even if that wasn't the case, why would it be worse? The 777 has a roomier cabin and bigger windows; both of which would help in the event of claustrophobia.

Don't mind it so much during short-hauls, as it is often the only ones available.... but transcontinental, you're darn right that I'm going to avoid it like the plague! Sure, I pay more, but at least I reduce my chances of being stuck between two overweight people. It seems like there's an increasing trend for airlines to use the 757 for trips across the pond and i hate HATE HATE HATE it!! Did I mention I hated that? Big grin

but transcontinental

Let's look at something like EWR-SFO: 3x3 is currently unavoidable, same thing with EWR-LAX. There's still even a good chance of getting a 752 on JFK-LAX. I find this sort of a weird discussion. Arguing over 3x3x3 and 2x5x2 on the 777 has merit, but there are thousands of 737's and 319's in the world and 3x3 is the only option, so it's unavoidable.

My apologies... I meant INTERcontinental. Obviously, when there are no options, you're pretty much stuck. However, for me, for example, when I fly IAD-DEN or IAD-ORD.... I always pick the fligth with the 777 because i prefer the 2x5x2 configuration better than the 3x3 that comes with the 319/320.

Even that phrase refers to flights between continents. I think something like a "midcontinental" flight is the phrase to which you're referring.

I'm fine with domestic flights around 3 hours, but if it's more than I'll try to get myself an aisle seat.
