Delta Flight Attendants-- Consistent Trend

Fri Jul 06, 2007 3:39 am

We tend to lump the major US carriers together in an "each-one-worse-than-the-other" category, but I have been flying frequently this year and have found, time after time, Delta Airlines' cabin crew to be superior to other US carriers.
They are friendlier, more polite and helpful, and do contribute to a more pleasant overall flight; and this is a consistent rather than a one-time observation. May be it has something to do with Delta being based in Atlanta (Southern Hospitality?)

Have others noted that as well? Or would you give the "best crew" award to a different carrier? IMO, continental and crews are pretty good too but less consistently so, and American is very hit or miss.

I had the pleasure of flying with Delta SAN-SLC-MSP-SLC-SAN on June 29th and July 3rd. I found every Delta employee to be friendly, smiling, and very much enjoying their job. That also goes for the SkyWest as well.

I concur. Delta Air Lines flight attendants tend to be the most consistant with service standards. Including procedures, willingness to assist w/ boarding, etc etc and the "Delta Style" service and that does include the company's roots from the south.

I agree as well - when I flew DL internationally to CDG last year the crews on both flights (DL22-777 and DL21-763) were excellent. Never did they pull a disappearing act and hang in the galleys and they were constantly coming around between meals with coffee/tea/water; all were very nice and polite. And I loved their new uniforms, especially the red dress!

I have always found DL to be a subpar airline, very much like AA, US and UA, and I only like travelling with CO. I will actually fly with AA and DL next week, which is quite unusual for me, and will see if I notice an improvement...

I think it has to do more with valuing their jobs more than others. They went through some hard times, and now they have a better outlook on things. Plus they don't have a union and can be fired on the spot. Delta Flight Crews are awesome, and I hope they keep getting great new routes.

Other airlines like AA,UA,US, and NW have unions and can't be fired easily. In fact , it is pretty hard to do so making Crews there not afraid of a passenger letter about them, or being to standard. Also older Flight Crews tend to bring in the old union "us and them" culture making newer Flight Crews on the same agenda as older ones.

Totally agree with this. I fly DL quite a bit and have always found their crews to be consistently wonderfula and hospitable. That's not to say that you don't find a bad apple in the bunch here and there but with DL it definitely appears to be much more the exception than the rule.

I have to agree - as a Medallion I find Delta's F/As (and often, ASA/Comair) to be some of the nicest around. While I've had a couple of mediocre NYC based crew (I guess it's the area), most are excellent.

I think a lot of the attitude you get from the crew reflects on the attitude you give them.

I tend to fly non-stops versus connections so I have flown CO, AA, DL, UA, HA, US, WN and F9 in the recent past domestically and I have not had one rude F/A on any of them.

Delta is also giving their employees post-bankruptcy incentives. One of the incentives is for the employees to achieve three goals for each month (on-time performance, complaints, baggage, maybe). If they achieve one goal I think they get $25, two, they get $50, and all three goals they get $100. Not exactly sure about the goals, but you get the idea. Also, the employees all LOVE the management. Everyone is sad to see Grinstein go, but just as happy if Whitehurst becomes the new CEO. It's a new Delta!
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

I have to admit that I usually find DL to have some of the best flight attendants...probably the best or second best, IMO, of all legacies (to me, AA gives them a run for their money), but they aren't perfect. About 3 weeks ago I flew MCI-ATL-DUB, and the MCI-ATL folks were FANTASTIC, while all but one or two of the ATL-DUB flight attendants were very, very dissapointing. I guess that, again, IMO, DL is a close second to AA in the legacy column.

Thanks for all your replies! It seems we concur then on Delta.

Not quite relevant to this thread, but although I like the new leather seating, one thing I miss is the dark blue striped upholstry they had on the bulkheads. Was very classy.

The dark blue pinstripes were nice but I like the white colored interiors a lot better. The new interiors make the aircraft seem a lot more spacious.

I agree Delta is good, but I think COA is just about as consistant and friendly in my opinion.
I've flew COA a lot more, though.
Anyone agree?

DL employees smile and are nice because they feel respected, well treated and enjoy their jobs. You can't get a crew member to smile at customers if they're company doesn't care about them. Implying that they smile for fear of losing their job is not true. I'm sure they wouldn't want to work at a company that instills fear. It's not true that it's harder to get fired at companies such as AA. I am one of many that recently got fired from them and having a union only acts as a defense barrier but in no way is a guarantee that you'll get your job back. The difference in working for a union and a non-union airline is that with a non-union airline, you find another job and move on with your life, whereas you're left hanging in the meantime while the union does their job and defends you.

My most recent flight on Delta was nearly one year ago (STT-ATL, with DL* opb Shuttle America connection to MSP). The Delta mainline, as well as DL* FAs were very good, though not what might be considered exceptional when compared to their counterparts at AA, NW and US, with whom I have also flown at around the same time and since.

Wandering slightly off-topic... what has surprised me most about the attitudes and helpfulness of Delta staff during the past year has occured on the ground at PHX, where Delta handles Sun Country's flights. On three different occasions I have accompanied and helped visiting family members though the check-in process with Delta for their Sun Country PHX-MSP flights. If Delta's PHX ticket counter staff are as positive and capable with their own flights as they are with the Sun Country flights they handle, one can surmise that they do an all-around consistenly superb job!

Sound alot like the CO incentive bonus that Gordon started long time ago.

Did you ever want to pull on the front of the uniform to see if a panel opened up and all the wires were inside?  duck   Smile

Robotic, that is interesting......I'll keep that in mind today when I get on the plane, never thought of it in that manner before.

I guess it's just my perception. Don't get me wrong, CO is a great airline and my number two choice for domestic travel, I just find that sometimes their flight attendants are too serious.

I always thought of it this way:

CO is like your Aunt. She's very strict and sometimes up-tight.
DL is like your old grandmother. She sometimes is all over the place, but you're always guaranteed a fun trip.

I just happen to like my grandmother more than my aunt...

Well the CO crew I had the other day was sure not like any Aunt I've seen nor were there any robots either......very happy go lucky, very friendly, and even bantered back and forth with the pax.

I find AA to be hit or miss.....I have found CO people to be good......even NW has improved greatly........but, DL from reservations (yes, I do call to get the miles for international upgrade option) to cabin crew to be back on the A game (I won't go into upper mgmt...another rant)...esp in the F cabin they are exceptional.......if only, in only, if only they were given more to work with!!!!!!

I have seen many @$$hole customers just pushing and seeing how far they can get with an airline employee or just about any service sector job that deserved to be kicked off the plane or what ever given the establishment.
I really pity those Delta flight attendants that have to put up with these kinds of passengers knowing they "can be fired on the spot" as someone above mentioned. I don't see being non-union a good thing.  no

I've flown Delta before and they were just about average. I always get great service on an airline and can't think of a bad experience from any crew member on a domestic flight. I do fly a lot too. Some of my best experiences were with United, Northwest, Aloha and even Southwest.
I don't recall Delta being extraordinary in any way.
