My personal favourite is the red/grey bowling shoe scheme. I was hoping to see a DC-10 in those colours in AMS in a couple of weeks, but since the DC-10s are gone now and the A330s now fly there in the new red/silver scheme.

I have read that NW operate one flight with a 757 to AMS, so I hope that might be in the old colours.

It was essentially a concept (hybrid) of the "Bowling Shoe" livery and what would become the current "nwa" livery.

Else, I love the "Bowling Shoe's" logo, it was ingenious. "Its a N, its a W, its a compass pointing towards the Northwest." Its too bad NW did away with it in favor of a corny compass that points to the Northeast on the right side of the aircraft.

The wingletted 757's are all in n/c, and are the ones flying to Europe.

They are all in the new colors, as is most of the fleet these days. Secondly they have 757 flights to AMS from BOS, DTW, and BDL.

NW's third scheme is the best, IMO.

I like the classic one - the "D.B. Cooper" one, as the thread-starter calls it. But I like all of them actually. NW never fully went the way of the "eurowhite" - even now it has some cream/silver fuselage color instead of plain white.

The problem with the bowling shoe: Even though the added red on the roof looks really cool, especially on the B744s since there's that much more red, the grey sides ruin it. Grey is almost as boring as white. At least it wasn't United's 1990s scheme. Also, the NW "compass," although clever/creative, is way too small for the tails it was put on. Especially on the DC-9s, where the compass is way off center and just looks wrong. I really like the current tail, and the current typeface, but sometimes it just doesn't look right on certain aircraft, like the A320, which would probably look best in one of the older two liveries.

Thanks for the info on the 757s,

I guess I will have to be content with the new red/silver colours and the A330s at AMS. What times do the flights operated by the A330s and the 757s arrive and depart AMS ?

I would have to say I just LOVE seeing the new livery on the bigger aircraft but on the DC9, I will always love the bowling shoe livery.

I may be the only one here who likes best what I call the "Northwest Orient" scheme that originated in the 1970s. What appeals to me about that livery is the mix of bare metal and multiple bright colors that accentuate the qualities of an airplane as a machine. If you compare the Northwest Orient scheme with the livery of CP Air in the 1970s, you can see the similar way in which bare metal and paint combine to emphasize the impressive dimensions of a modern airliner as a feat of mechanical engineering. The liveries of those two airlines on the 747 in particular demonstrates this. Check out these photos:

The Bowling Shoe with an update that changes the gray to a royal blue ,and the white to the new silver.
The new tail logo sucks, the old one with the double meaning was original & timeless, no need for change.
The lower case nwa looks wimpy!
Wulff must have a depressing outlook to bring that dead gray color to two airlines.

Definitely agree with you there man! I remember seeing that livery as a little kid when my Mom and I changed planes in MEM....its been the only time I have flown NWA.

Question though, why was the 1990s scheme called the bowling shoe scheme? I guess I don't see it...LOL.

I do like the silver bullet livery, but I liked the bowling shoe on the A320, 752, 727, DC-10, and 744

My vote goes to the "Northwest Orient" livery of the late 70s to late 80s.

I als fondly recall the radio commercial jingle that was sung:

"North -west Or-i-ent . . . . BOOOOOOONG . . . Aiiiiiiiiir- liiiiiines."

I would love it if NW did some retro jets.. especially on the DC-9. The A320 could where the Orient livery as the first one was delivered like that. But the rest of the colors would look crappy on the 320.

Bowling Shoe!

The new livery is way too "post-modern" for my taste. Bowling Shoe looks very professional and business like. The new one is...well...ick.

Re the DC-8 photo in Reply 7, as a sidenote, only the first 2 of NW's 5 DC-8-32s were delivered in that livery as used on their piston types (and Lockheed Electras). Their last 3 DC-8s arrived in the livery as shown on the 727-100 in the original posting. Both below.

My favorite has to be the Bowling Shoe livery. Although I also like the new one and the Northwest Orient one just as much. There's just something sentimental about the Bowling Shoe livery.
