Which Aircraft Were 'Born' On Your Birthday?

Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:03 am

Well here's an idea for a different thread; which aircraft flew, or were 'born', for the first time on the exact day you were born on?

So far I have found two for myself, aircraft which took to the air for the first time on the 30th January, 1987, although there are probably more;

Hopefully one day I can get a flight on one of these birds, I probably have the best chance with SAS. Has anyone already managed this - to fly an aircraft exactly as old as they are?

Look at the production lists, such as those available on airfleets.net, and see where the day you were born on matches exactly with the date of the first flight.

I don't think I'll get a chance to fly on any of these planes. I don't plan on doing any domestic Japanese traveling anytime soon. Or stowing away with some FedEx cargo.

Well, I don't know about the first flight of any aircraft on my b-day, but I can tell you what aircraft was DELIVERED the same day that I was...August 24, 1961. It was a 707-138B delivered to Qantas as VH-EBJ, named the "City of Longreach". One of only 13 shortbody 707s built specifically for Qantas. My "birth" plane was last seen in Cairo. No idea where the aircraft is now.

08 April 1987:
Only one Bae-146, which has seen multiple operators.
Orginally delivered to PSA as N367PS, its first pic in the DB was one year later with hybrid USAir titles as N191US.

It never got full USAir colors, as it went to Crossair in 1990 as HB-IXD. The same year it visited Farnborough.

Three years later, it was returned to Bae as G-BVFV.
Twenty days later, it went to CityJet as EI-JET, where it served for three years, first under contract with Virgin Atlantic.

Sorry for all the pics, but I only got one plane so I may as well show it off, right?

I was born one day later than the 767 that became American 11 (as well as a number of other Boeing aircraft that first flew on the 7th), but only the one Bae-146 had its first flight on my birthday. Lots of planes, like Boeings and MD80s had their first flights on the 7th, but not on the 8th. Either they didn't have first flights on Wednesdays, or there was bad weather on the west coast. Or just some weird coincidence.

Great idea for a thread.

Well I'm a child of 1972, and there are a number of aircraft types being built then which don't show up on the linked site.

For those that are listed, only one shared my birthday.

VT-EBN A 747-200 of Air-India.

If one cannot find your "b-day" plane (the first flight date), try the delivery date instead. If you were "delivered" to your mother, so can an aircraft to its original owner. If you're into Boeing & McDonnell Douglas commercial planes, try the Boeing's orders & deliveries webpage. It goes back as far as 1958.

ShannonInAMA, I did you a favor. I searched the Boeing webpage for orders & deliveries for your "birth" plane, and came away with no hits for 10/10/65. But the following year, on your 1st birthday...United took delivery of a 727-100C and KLM took a DC-9-10. No idea what the registrations are, tho. That requires another, different search. So you did get 2 "presents" on your 1st b-day.

The DC-6B, regarded by many as the most successful type of the propliner era, made its first flight one day after I was born. Here's a photo of one delivered to Swissair when I was 5 months old:

Although I am unable to find a production list that covers the post World War II propliner era, the date on which I was born was an eventful time in airliner developments.

First Lockheed L-1049 Connie flight 3 months before I was born, entered service some 10 months after I was born

Convair 340 announced 2 months before I was born, first flight 9 months after I was born

First De Havilland Comet delivered to BOAC 70 days after I was born, introduced into service by BOAC on the date of my first birthday

Last Boeing 377 Stratocruiser delivery 10 months before my date of birth

Since the air war over Korea was in full swing on the day I was born, it is altogether possible, even likely, that a North American F-86 and/or Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15, perhaps a Grumman F9F Panther and/or McDonnell F2H Banshee was also born on my birthday.

The following site has most if not all of the Douglas production list, but does not show delivery dates.

DC-6 series is on the page starting with C/n 40001. Includes military types which intermingled with commercial aircraft depending on when they were built.

I was born the year the original standard DC-6 went into service, and the year the firsst of the excellent Convair Liner series, the 240, made its first flight. I agree the DC-6B in particular was a superb aircraft and I'm glad I was able to fly on several.

Being Canadian, my closest brush with aviation fame was being born 11 days after the sturdy De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver (1692 built and hundreds still flying) made its first flight, concidentally both events 60 years ago this month!

Couldn't find any with a first flight on my birthday (May 1, 1975), so I went with the delivery date:

No photo, but a Seaboard World Airlines DC8-50C was delivered on my birthday way back on 17 March 1966. Also Gemini 8 splashed down that day-this was the mission with the faulty Agena rocket that forced an early return.
