Continental - Time To Change Livery?

Mon Aug 06, 2007 12:11 pm

So in the past 5 years we've seen 3 of the 5 legacy carriers change their livery..... beautiful ones mind you.

Do you think it is time for Continental to follow in the likes of United and Delta and change/modernize their livery?

Regards,
AA7295

PS: I realise that American is a legacy carrier, but I've read that they are very hesitant in changin their livery.

Not at all. I really like CO's livery, it's never dated. What I don't like is to see airlines changing their liveries every 5 years. Delta for example, had 3 different liveries in the past what, 10 years??

What's to modernize? Just look at AA. They haven't changed their livery in decades!

I think Continental can get about another 5-10 years out of this one before the font starts to look antiquated.

I'd like to see them paint their planes in more than just white and grey other than the tail.

Not at all, DL, UAL, NWA and US Airways changed their liveries because they were trying to reinvent themselves (DL several times). They figured changing their livery will have an effect on public perception. CO has strong customer satisfaction and good employee relations, there's no need to reinvent themselves as they did in 1991 when the current livery was introduced.

The first time I flew on CO's "new" livery was in the Summer of '91 on a A300 from IAH-EWR.

its a classic, timeless livery in the leauge with AA, AF, QF (even though it was just "slightly modified"), KE, etc. Why would they change something that works well?

I really like it; however, I wouldn't mind seeing some small changes (like adding a little color as the pic above has done). That way it is still simple and elegant, but changed slightly.

It was posted in the previous thread about CO's livery. New Livery For CO? (by BFS Feb 6 2007 in Civil Aviation)

If they change it I'd like it something like that, but I'd rather the keep with what they have for now. It's not time yet.

They won't drop the gold and silver accents for shades of blue.

There are a lot of creative CO updated liveries out there. Without screwing up the brand, like DL, they could still create something 21st century.

Why? What is the purpose? All those changed went through reorg or reinvention, and CO livery is great, modern and quite nice. I say leave it as is... Spend the money on cabin upgrades and a new Business First to include lie-flat and better IFE.

Splash some gold somewhere on that and it would be sensational. Absoultely gorgeous, in my opinion. I do, however, think there's nothing wrong with CO's current livery and it doesn't need to be changed.

1991 was a long time ago. Just think what life would be like if hairstyles, or music, or cars had
stayed the same! I think as the airline moves into a new era (with their all new 787's) a new/updated
livery is in order.

Different font on the "Continental" titling, though. I love the tail and engine nacelle designs.

I like the globe image on the tail of COPA aircraft. But I am hesitant to see change. Continental has tremendous brand loyalty among it's frequent fliers because it has one of the most consistent products. You get the same thing whether you fly from EWR-LAX, IAH-FLL, or CLE-DCA. If you fly United JFK-LAX-LAS-IAD you will experience three different products (P.S., TED, and Mainline).

I would like CO to follow in the footsteps of QF and update their logo, like make it a bit more modern, and change the font.

The reason why i created this post is that I think the font doesn't represent the stature and grandeur of the airline.

The font needs to be something more special.

The font is very recognizable, clean and crisp. The logo is perfect for where CO is right now.

Why change a good thing? Just for the sake of change?

No, thank goodness.

First DLs new livery is a step to the past. It's not attractive, it's not striking, it's in fact borish.

And UAs new livery - other than a reasonable color scheme - is fair, I like it, but it's nothing spectacular.

COs current livery is great . . . simple, easily recognizeable logo, subtle, not dramatic and overwhelming, colors.

IF it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think Continental's is just fine - clean, classy, and the gold line and grey belly keeps it from being just another Eurowhite bore. I'd consider making the gold line a little thicker, other than that, no changes needed.

Actually, for the record, it was changed in 1997 after 30+ years, then again in 2000 (4 years later), and then once more this year in 2007 (7 years later) - so much for your "daily" theory, eh?

In the last 10 years, Varig had the following livery variations flying:

To an extent, CO's current livery was a product of their rebirth following THEIR second bankruptcy filing within a decade, having been introduced in the early 1990's, so - what's your point?

4 liveries within 7 years is ridiculous, not to mention that each time they changed their livery, it was for the worse and they constantly had planes in 3 different liveries in service at the same time, talk about corporate identity. As about RG, who said that, just cuz he's Brazilian, he's an RG lover?

As for CO, No need for a livery change there.

Continental has one of my favorite paint schemes. The globe on the tail makes me think of Continental as a "classy" airline. Even though they are definetly not my airline of choice, I don't see the need to change such a professional and elegant livery.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to make a major change in a company's logo/livery? For an airline it's not just the aircraft but every sign on every building, thousands of vehicles and baggage carts at airports, stationery, business cards, websites etc. etc. And for what purpose? It would make absolutely no difference in customers' decisions about flying CO or not flying CO.

Spend the money where it directly affects the passenger. AA has by far the best idea when it comes to liveries. And their current, almost 40-year old, design still looks good and I expect it will last another decade or two.

In my opinion, with rare exceptions, most livery changes in recent years have been worse than the ones they replaced.

I think that CO's brand identity is too strong to change the livery outright, but I can think of a couple updates that might feel like a small refreshment, such as:

- Make the gold slightly thicker and have it bend down a little bit towards the front, kinda like what Ryanair does to its cheatline, but not even as much as that.
- Maybe a slight font update, but that isn't even that needed. If anything, keep the letters bold and thick but just get rid of the serifs, which are out of style these days.
- Add a little bit of dimension to the globe, perhaps by adding some white as a pseudo-reflection from an imaginary light source reflecting off of the gold.

But none of them are really that needed and of course it will all cost money, so why even bother?
