Go to LGA. They have alot of frequency and the lines are not too bad but they can be up there depending on if your flight coincides with a few CO flights at the same time. Defineately LGA for sure though. Stay away from the city where the sewer meets the sea. (Sewerk EWR) Bad commute from the airport generally. JFK is a little more pain in the bum than LGA as well.

All of the airports are a bear, if weather or traffic happens it generally happens to all. LGA is your first choice in terms of location, followed closely by EWR (my opinion based on past travels).

As for transportation into the city, I know there are cheaper options, but for the hassle factor I always go with a town car service. I have used http://www.telavivlimo.com/ in the past with excellent service every time.

As I mentioned, other train / bus options are available, likely cheaper but for $29 it is not worth my hassle.

Have fun,

ok.. here's my .02, I live on the upper east, I honestly prefer LGA, however for a day trip to Times Square, EWR is very accessible...

Here's from what I know: (All are approx)
LGA
MTA: MTA Card: $2.00 Cash: $4.00 (Take the M60 to the Astoria Blvd, take the N or W to the 42nd street station (Times Square)), (Have 2.00 in US Coin available per person.. I don't think you can buy the MTA Card at LGA...
Cab: (about $35.00) can run more based on traffic.
Black Car: $35.00 (flat rate, try 212-777-7777... I use another company for business, but for personal use I've found them very reasonable and reliable.

JFK
MTA: $7.00 (Take the Airtrain to Jamaica Center, take the E to the 42nd street station (Times Square))
Cab: (about $45.00 (I think)) Flat rate last time I was there...
Black Car: $50.00 (flat rate, try 212-777-7777... I use another company for business, but for personal use I've found them very reasonable and reliable.

EWR
MTA: ~$7.50 (Take the Airtrain to Penn Station, and then take any number of subways from Penn up to 42nd street...
Cab: (about $45.00) can run more based on traffic.

I would go with EWR because you can take AirTrain right into Penn Station. It beats sitting in Lincoln Tunnel traffic (EWR) or Midtown Tunnel Traffic (LGA).

As has been mentioned above, LGA is probably your best bet. The airport can get crowded at peak times--be early or else you might hit a lengthy security line up, but I've noticed airline and TSA employees at LGA are far more efficient than you would find at most other airports. Lines move rather quickly, so be sure to have everything ready when you check in, go through security etc.

JFK can work well, and MTA service via AirTrain works well, but I don't know how convenient the subway/train is when you're lugging bags. I have connected several times at EWR and enjoy the airport, but I have never commuted from EWR into the city. My recommendation for distance and frequency is LGA.

My one gripe with LGA is the line for cabs. I've spent a few cold and long nights in cab lines at LGA. If you are willing to pay more in order to wait less, I highly recommend that you reserve a car and driver. Carey limo has worked well for me in the past. A representative greets you at the baggage claim, helps you with your luggage, and then radios your driver when you are ready to go. Even though you will have to pay more, you will save a lot of hassle and time between LGA and Manhattan. www.carey.com
I've taken cabs from Manhattan to LGA before with no problems, and I even recommend grabbing a cab in Manhattan to LGA rather than meeting a hired car at a prearranged time and place.

I was positively surprised about JFK in June. All the terminals I visited (1, 4, 7) were clean and quite good. AirTrain was good. Nothing to complain, really, but the baggage storage staff at terminal 4 were very unfriendly and blunt.

Oh, and terminal 7's smoothie & milkshake kiosk was EXCELLENT.

I think you missed a step somewhere in there, haha.

Take AirTrain to Newark Airport Train Station, then take New Jersey Transit to New York Penn Station, and THEN take the subway to 42nd st.

Oh come on. I hope you're joking. It's nothing against the people there, but even Newark-ians will tell you how absolutely horrendous it smells there with all the industry. You can't drive through Elizabeth with the windows down for fear of dying.

Your best bet is LGA. From there take the New York Airport Service bus into Manhattan. The cost is $21.00 round trip and takes about 45 minutes each way. The bus operates every 20 minutes.

That same bus runs to and from EWR as well.

Thats true, but depends on the time of day and week.

Thats a little bit of exaggeration. Also...[Bethlehem, PA]. I live in Jersey, about 6 miles from EWR.

Also, as a side note...why does an Airports location (ie EWR) effect the Airport or service itself? Lets be a little more mature here. If you have problems with Jersey, Newark, or anything else I would gladly discuss them with you via IM or in another thread (and yes, that was a friendly invitation).

The most bang for your buck is EWR. LGA is a pain via bublic transport ($2 - Cheap!)... and easy via a taxi (+/-$30... not so cheap). EWR, via NJTransit, is very easy to use and only costs abour $10.

Great summaries above. If you are willing to pay $40 for a cab to get the city, go to LGA. Best airport to use. You can also use NY Airport Service which I have always found reasonable and efficient.

EWR and JFK via airtrains and public transit (NJ Transit and LIRR/E-train respectively) are also quite cheap and take ~1 hour to get into mid-town from the terminals (less with efficient connections).

As for delays -- if one is packed, they'll all be packed -- so it hardly matters. If you want to avoid delays, fly into HPN and get an $80 cab into Manhattan (or a $30 cab to White Plains Metro-North station and another $7 for train into GCT). I'm a HUGE fan of HPN, then again I grew up in Westchester. Obviously it is not the airport to use for public transit into the city, but since you mentioned it...

LGA might be your better choice. LGA has a good location and it's not as busy, so things usually get handled more efficiently (at least according to my experience).

I'd go EWR no doubt, but that's because I prefer train service to the bus. At EWR, you take AirTrain a few minutes to the rail station where you can utilize either Amtrak or NJ Transit to Penn Station. The ride, all in all, is about half an hour.

HPN is a bit too far from Manhattan, but is less crowded and delay-prone than LGA and EWR. My pick would be LGA as it is the closest to Manhattan and is the cheapest cab ride into the city compared to EWR (which is about $60 - I don't know what LGA is as I haven't flown into there before). But if you're not a cab guy and would prefer NJTransit, EWR would be OK (especially if you're flying on CO as Terminal C is quite nice w/ ample shopping/concessions). The main reason LGA would probably be better is that its not quite as busy as EWR and isn't as delay-prone.

In the state that is the armpit of the United states!  Wink I can say that cause I live here, right?

Having said that, I'd still have to give my vote to EWR. The NJT will more than likely get you to manhattan quicker, and it's SO much easier to figure out than the MTA.

That would be a neat trick, given that the AirTrains (JFK & EWR) do not go to NY Penn Station. I guess you forgot the  Wink

The JFK AirTrain goes to Jamaica (Queens, not the island nation) and Howard Beach, where you can connect to the LIRR and A train (subway), respectively.

The EWR AirTrain connects to Amtrak & NJ Transit, both of which go to NYP.
