Ever Wake Up And Want To Go Flying?

Wed Aug 08, 2007 11:49 am

I live in Philadelphia and I one day woke up and said I want to go somewhere just for fun and be home in the same day. Now being in Philly, the options are New York, Washington, Baltimore, Poconos, Atlantic City. After a few years, these options, though always exciting, do get a little normal. To plan a trip would mean to take a few days off and fly far far away and see some family I have in Brazil and Australia.
So, last year I went to Chicago for the day. I budgeted the whole trip, taxes and airfare for under $200
CHICAGO – NOVEMBER 15, 2006
1 day rail pass $5
Otherwise $2 a trip
45 minutes from airport to city.
Blue line from O’hare to La salle station
Sears Tower sky deck tour $12.95
Walk to Monroe Station, head north to Chicago station
Lunch Mc.Donalds $5.87
John Hancock observatory $11.00
Extra expenses (Starbucks, snack) $5.21
Train from Chicago to Washington (ended up walking)
Transfer to Blue line to O’Hare
American Airlines flight 1265 depart Philly 8:05 am
Arrive Chicago O’Hare 9:35 am
Aircraft MD-80
American Airlines flight 2082 depart O’Hare 8:20 pm
Arrive Philly 11:10 pm
Aircraft MD-80
+$20.60 tax $158.60
––––––––––––––––––-
$198.63
I took some extra cash and obviously the credit cards just incase, but I did it. It was fun, I actually have a video of it on youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=yIPvCcLPhGs

I took my little dinky camera I didnt want to be weighed down.

My next major venture is Daytrip to the west coast and fly back on the redeye. Im thinking about UA or US nonstops as a connection may just delay my day. I could be on the ground in SFO by 11am and have a good 9 hours or so to fool around and get back to the airport. I have found roundtrip fares as low as $247. Now I could budget my trip for $300 or $350. Im not rich, but I do love the unexpected adventure

So my point/question here is, anybody here done any trips for fun that others may consider obsurd?

I tried to convince my parents to let me do a daytrip from BOS to GRB to ride on an Avro RJ before NW phased them out, it didn't work out though. I will definatly do a daytrip to ride on NW's DC-9s before their retirement.

I do it regularly -- in fact, I've been known to be chatting to friends, and two hours later I'm on a plane to go visit them  Smile I've also done an over-night jaunt to HKG before ... although that was a little more planned.

If I get my christmans bonus, (depending how big the bonus is ) im thinking about going to London for the day. Get on a British Airways 777 and fly back on a 767. Of coursse I would spend the night in a sleezy room somwhere, but hey with no luggage and just a camera and laptop, i'd have so much fun i think  Smile

I've had that urge before... One day in November I wanted to go to PHX for a daytrip and spotting, but I didn't get to until last week when I got hired by US Airways and did my pre-employment processing. It kicked ass though, I love spotting from the garage. In fact, I love PHX airport in general.

Sure, I used to do spur of the moment day trips all the time. Of course, I was non-revving so it was much cheaper! Usually I'd just be sitting around the ramp room and look for flights on my off days, and when I found something that looked wide open I'd list for it. It was always pretty simple too - wear a polo and slacks to the airport, pack a bag with shorts, casual shoes, a book, and my ipod and it was off to the airport. Arrive 30 minutes before departure, duck around security with my SIDA badge, beg the gate agent for a seat and I was off. When I arrived I would change into my casual clothes in the airport bathroom (gross, I know) and enjoy the day. My only backup was the phone number of a hotel in case I got stranded. It always made for great conversations with my friends: "Hey, what did you do yesterday?" Well, I went out to Washington to see an exhibit in the Hirshhorn museum that I wanted to see. They were always pretty jealous. DCA was my absolute favorite day trip destination because the subway was so simple.

Now that im old enough to use my passes without being a U/M i did a trip to Dallas and back from Philly last month. A friend of mine was on UA to CID through ORD. I went to the airport to see them off but they never showed up. Well a little later im walking through the terminal and i see my friend. He got re-routed on AA through DFW, his ORD-CID got cancelled. 10 minutes later i was joining him on the flight to DFW. I left at 930am and was back in Philly by 545pm. Ive also done a one day trip to ORD and im hoping to do one to MIA later in September.

I did it when I was 18, I flew to San Jose from YYZ via O'Hare. It was supposed to be a spontaneous 3-4 day trip that turned into me living near San Francisco (Livermore) for almost a year! (met a girl there...)

Although now with a career and life's other little tie downs it would be a tad more difficult.

Yes, about a year ago me and a friend rented a plane and flew to Arkansas to see some mountains. Well, hills really. But coming from Oklahoma they were mountains. I wrote a trip report about it but am too lazy to link it.

For my 18th birthday my parents are getting me a flight from SAN to SFO to watch planes then come home, we are going on united first class using the 500 mile upgrade so it will be fun even though it is a short flight

When I worked for United I would get off work and want to fly somewhere. Depending on loads fly to London, Paris, or Frankfurt and spend a few hours have lunch and then fly back. I'd be home the next morning.

On my days off it was more fun, I would plan a day trip to AMS and end up in PVG because the loads sucked. I remember the first time my mom called me and was like "how is London?" and I replied "London was full we went to Sydney instead."

I do the same thing. I've gone to ATL and ABQ so far this year. Just sitting at home on my day off and figured, "Hey, why not? It is free, after all." I'm going to Europe for a couple days next week, but that was planned so it doesn't count.

John Hancock observatory $11.00

You could have saved up and have more fun at the same time on this point: the bar in the tower is just one floor below the observatory, and admission is free, and also without a queue, drinks are 10 bucks. Keep in mind next time you're there!

I often think about it - a lot of the transatlantics fly over my house on their way to mainland Europe, so often I'll gaze up at the sky in the morning and wish I was flying somewhere that day. I wouldn't book on the same day for a long trip, as I prefer to book in advance to get the best routing on the nicest aircraft for the lowest possible price, but often I'd book a trip home at a few hours notice. That though never normally exceeds £40 one way.

I can non-rev and I wake up every morning feeling that I wnat to fly somewhere. I work fr BA and live in NCL so the only airline I can non-rev on the same day is BA. If I plamn it a couple of days in advance I can non-rev to CDG, AMS, DUS and very soon DXB. In fact I think Im going to book a day trip to AMS for my day off next wek.

Sounds like when I tried to convince my parents to let me fly HXD-ATL-HXD on March 17 when ASA started service to Hilton Head. Airfare was $178. However, I got to fly down to Daytona Beach to visit my best friend in June, and might go again in October. I did get to fly SNA-ATL-HXD on Sunday when we got rerouted on our way home from vacation. So I did get to fly into HXD, and it was my first ATR 72 flight. Look for my trip report soon.

Not at all. Just talk to all these a.netters and their 'mileage trips'. Flying just to say they did.

Anyway, that looks like a fun trip and would actually make quite a nice Trip Report with photos and a bit of effort.  Smile

YES!

I once woke up at 08.00 in London and thought "I fancy going to New York today." So I did. This was in the days when Air India had a standby fare of £85 one way but you had to go to there Bond Street office to get it. I went to see if they had a seat and by 13.30 was airborne in a 747 heading off across the Pond. Mercifully I had friends in New York and so when I landed I called and said, "Guess who is in town." They didn't seem the slightest bit surprised. I stayed a couple of nights and then got another Air India standby back. It was my first time on Air India and I throughly enjoyed it because I had seats to myself each flight.

YES, I would do that for sure as well!!
I wake up and think: where to go? Then I check the loads and then I check my schedule and then I stay at home, flights too full (NON REV), too risky not to come back on time for one of my own flights on duty...
But I did a 36 hour trip to DEN (all the way from FRA) and I hope to do such trips in the future again...
