NW Or YX For The Same Fare, Which Do You Choose?

Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:17 am

A few weeks ago my sister called me up and asked "I found a flight to Minneapolis for Christmas for around $360 (including taxes and fees); is that a good price and should I go ahead and book it now?" I told her yes, that sounded like a pretty good price for MSP for that time of year, and I don't think fares for around Christmas time are likely to get cheaper, so she should go ahead and book it.

At the time she only mentioned that she had found a non-stop flight on NW from RDU to MSP for that price, but the next time we talked she mentioned that she also had the option of flying RDU-MKE-MSP on YX for the same price. She had apparently already made up her mind to go with the one on NW because a) it's non-stop, b) they're part of SkyTeam and that's where her FF miles are, and c) she didn't really know anything about Midwest.

I told her that based what I know about YX's service I would have advised her to at least think about going with them, and I of course told her about the cookies. Had I been in her situation I probably would have picked YX.

So, kind of inspired by Qantas787's similar thread, I'm curious which option a.netters would have picked given the above factors.

RDU-MKE is operated by a CRJ-200. I don't think it matters of they serve you a full meal, most people here won't fly on a CRJ-200. Out of the three MKE-MSP flights, 2 are CRJ's and the other is a 717. Chances are very high for a flight with 4 CRJ's.

I would probably pick NW because of the non-stop and the miles, and the lack of a CR2 flight.

That's a good point. I knew the RDU-MKE leg would have been a CRJ, but I wasn't sure about the MKE-MSP leg.

I would have also gone with NW. I try to aviod the CRJ at all costs. Also because of her FF miles, I think she made the right choise. The fact that its non-stop would have seeled the deal for me!

If price was the same, I would take a nonstop on Northwest and bring my own cookies on-board the freakin plane! Take that YX!  Smile

I'd go with NW and the non-stop flight to lessen potential problems due to delays, in particular missing her connecting flight in MKE during the busy Christmas season. Avoiding the CRJ-200 is definitely a plus as well!

For those who may not know, YX and NW have reciprocal Frequent Flyer agreements, so Yflyer, if your sister's miles are with NW (and not another SkyTeam member), she could have earned her miles flying YX.

If you had the opportunity to find out what YX flights she had for her fare quote, I would have recommended going YX just for the opportunity to catch the 717.

However, you can't beat a nonstop flight ... and during the Christmas season, between weather and the masses, she's likely better off.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

No, they're with CO.

If it were me, I probably would have done that, but I doubt she cares what type of aircraft she flies on.

Uh.... you better let YX know that.

His sister's miles are with CO, so by flying NW, the miles go to her CO account.

No offense, but that was rather easy to figure out.

YX if you are on the 717.

No 717, then no YX. One of the MD-80's could be ok, even though most of the fleet are some of the oldest Mad Dogs ever built. But as others said, CRJ-200's are no fun to fly on. NW A319's are pretty nice, although the A320's are certainly nothing to write home about.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.
