Emirates, A Bad Choice?

Wed Aug 22, 2007 5:28 pm

HI we're planning a tip in Emirates business, from london to japan (via dubia (not stopping I hope) then back via bangkok, theres come conflicting reports on skytrax and the website doesnt seem to show the seats on the london dubai route, we havent booked yet, is there any news on Emirates bringing all their planes cabins up to the same standard? The london dubai route seats look pretty dated (we'e just flown EVA Premium laurel which was excellent IMHO!)

Any ideas great

I fly to BKK via the Gulf about four or five times a year - I'll try to share my insight with you if I can.

I presume you will be flying ex-LHR in which case it is a mix of 773A and 77W, whereas the LGW flights are always 77W apart from the early morning flight which is A332.

If in business class then their C Class product on their 77Ws is decent but not wonderful - Qatar and Etihad are ahead in that respect. Service, menu, IFE etc are as good as anybody, but the older Biz class seats are not fully lie-flat, whereas QR and EY are. They have a better ontime reliability than QR and EY in my experience and DXB is a nicer airport to transit than AUH or DOH. I travelled BR business class when they were still using the 744 ex-LHR and even EK's older biz class is better, although they may have changed it with the introduction of the 77W.

My advice?

Go Biz class with QR on the evening flight ex-LHR. Will be a A340-600 and they are so much quieter than the 777 up the front it is untrue. Seats much better than EK C-Class in my opinion, and service really attentive and high class. Food top notch and a World class winelist - drank loads of a really lovely Laurent Perrier Premier Cru 1996 last month when I did this exact flight - beautiful, beautiful champagne. They fly the A332 to Osaka and they are nearly as good. Flights ex-BKK are almost always A333 in my experience, although I've seen A332 scheduled. You get a nice sleeper suit, Aigner amenity kit and the seat is fully lie-flat, acres wide, and very comfortable. Everything is adjustable. They use a different IFE system to EK which is much more reliable and easier to use, fully on demand, although there are not as many channels.

Food ex-LHR was -

Thai sweet fishcakes with a pistacio and sweet chilli jus as an appetiser.

Fois Gras, dusted green salad with coriander houmous, mixed vegetables, warm breads and smoked salmon roundels as a starter.

Cajun chicken and pomodoro tomato grilled chicken skewers with sweet potato wedges, asparagus spears, and a spicy tomato sauce as a main course for main course.

Date and toffee warm cake with a walnut and cream emulsion for dessert.

Fantastic cheeseboard with a 20 year old Port if I remember rightly.

Washed down with three or four flutes of aforementioned bubbly!

EK are not much inferior, and if the connection times are better then you may prefer to go with them, but in my experience the new QR biz class absolutely wipes the floor with VS, BA (Old CW), LH, GF, TG, AF, UA, and pretty much everyone else - the new BA club world and SQ new biz on their 77W are roughly on a par I would say judging by the pics and reviews I've seen.

Hope that hasnt confused your decision even more!

Have a great flight.

Nowhere even near an expert as ChrisBA777ER, so YMMV, but I think Malaysia Airlines' new Business Class is really nice, too; maybe not quite up to SQ and QR levels, though.
See Chrisrad's trip report for details.

My own experience with EK C-Class was mixed: a very nice surprise, because I had been upgraded from Y for the SYD to BKK leg, but then also a non-functioning seat that stubbornly resisted several reboots of the entire C cabin -- the leg support was stuck at highest level on my seat as well as my neighbors, which made eating a bit awkward, in fact.
