If You Get A Window Seat Without A Window?

Mon Sep 03, 2007 11:52 pm

What would you do?

1. Sit down and accept it.

2. Ask for another seat.

3. Leave the aircraft if you not get another seat.

Or?

Ps. I will never again accept that kind of seat... Ds.

If you got off the aircraft because you didn't get the window seat you wanted, chances are you'd be on your own as far as booking another flight, which means paying for change fees and differences in fare if not a whole new ticket.

Most Contracts of Carriage state something about not guaranteeing the customer a specific kind of seat (along with things about overselling flights, etc.)

That said, I'd probably sit down, shut up, and deal with it. Life is too short to be upset over something so meaningless as a window seat. Sure, I like to look out the window, but if I have no other option, oh well. Life goes on.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

This is my opinion:

It happens. You're still gonna get where you want to go, at the same time as everyone else. For the most part, once in the sky, there isn't a hell of a lot to look out at - lots of clouds, lots of ocean, lots of empty boring land...and that's if it's even light out.

I've been stuck in this situation a few times (I usually fly aisle anyways, but sometimes I'll end up in window). I can't really sleep when flying, but actually, the only flight I slept all the way through was a GFK-MSP flight on a Saab 340, and ended up on the left side, row 2 where there was no window (the propeller was right outside) - slept like a baby until waking up to the gear going down coming into MSP. Back in June of this year, I flew ATL-DUB in a windowless window seat, and it was fine...again, actually slept somewhat decent. Maybe I should seach out seats without windows!  Wink

Is there a reason you will "never accept that kind of seat"? Do you anxious or panic if you cannot see out the window? Otherwise, it's just a seat, it's not where you're sitting your whole life...you'd seriously "never accept it" and get off the plane just because of that? wow...

Go to www.seatguru.com , find a good seat, then go to the airlines' website and select that seat (except for UA according to these forums). You'll never be in this situation unless you book late.

I agree with N231YE. Just look at seatguru.com and pick the best seat.

As they have said before....seatguru is your best friend.

Look at it this way: If you booked a middle seat would you ask for another seat and refuse to board? Someone has to sit in the bad seats, by luck of the draw that is you.

What the hell would an A.netter do without a window? They'd have to go crazy. No offense, but some of you guys are kinda sad. Not all of you, only the 10% that will say they NEED to get in a window.

It's easy to dismiss people as 'sad' for saying this, but think of the claustrophobic amongst us - having that window is a real help as it reduces the sense of being enclosed and really could make the difference between that person staying on the aircraft, or getting straight off.

I've only had one flight as such, BMI Baby on BHX-BFS with a B735. Was a bit of a bugger because I like looking down at the ground below, but hey ho, it's not the end of the world.

I'd probably request another seat, or see if somebody wanted to somehow trade seats, and if not, sit down and take it. Sounds sad maybe, but I'm one of those people that just has to have something to see.

When I flew to Germany in 2005, from ORD-IAD, I was booked in middle of a 2-5-2 arrangement. I managed to play rock, paper, scissors to get the window seat and I'd do it again. I got some awesome sights out of that window. Some that I haven't seen ever before, or yet after.

I would accept it, read a book, listen to some music or watch an onflight film. Or try to sleep.

I got one of these windowless window seats on a Bae 146 EDI-LGW. The seat felt really cramped with no window so I got up and sat behind in a spare row.

The rear emergency exit row on 757's don't normally have a window but in that case I like the extra leg-room.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

This happened to me at the end of July when I flew ATL-SEA on a DL 763...seat 13A (if I remember correctly) has no window! This was pretty funny to me since I decided against giving up my seat on the overbooked flight for Delta Dollars since I figured I probably wouldn't get a window seat on the later flight!

I asked the FA if it was too late to volunteer my seat, and after inquiring, she ushered me off the plane to make arrangements to do so. After the passenger taking my seat was boarded, the gate agents (for reasons unclear to me) came to the conclusion that they weren't able to use me, and since one passenger hadn't shown up, they put me back on the plane!

However, not before arranging for my drinks to be free.  Wink

And my new seat was by a window!

I like the window, but will take an aisle. I have never got the middle except when I have flown with the girlfriend and I gave her the window. I usually fly on a DC-9 and I sit on the two side. NW is good about actually seating you were you picked to sit. When I went to SFO this past summer there was no open window seats or aisles when I booked so I bought a "coach choice" seat for $15.

This happened to me, once on a 747. I requested and received a "window" seat but there was no window. An outside view of a 747 (and 767) will show gaps between the line of windows. I was seated in one of these gaps. I took my seat, then after the doors were closed, I got up and took another seat  Smile (Luckily, the flight was not full).

If the seats around you are full, you could push the F/A call button and ask for another window seat.

Good Day  Smile

Try to make the most of the Journey with the existing seat if there is no other seat available.

Depending on where the seat is located. Usually I wouldn't do anything, except if the aircraft is very light loaded, I would just switch.

I flew PVG-SVO last month, and asked for a window seat. Ended up getting one at the last row on the 767, but there was no window, the seat could barely recline, and it felt kinda claustrophobic down there in the back, especially for a 10 hours daytime flight. I was determined to ask the F/A if it was possible to switch, but I waited till the doors were closed and the seat next to me ended up empty as the only one i the Y section, which actually made the ride quite comfortable, although absolut no outside view..

This is very annoying, I had it happen to me on AC flying from YUL-YVR in a 767.
Not only were we told that this seat definitely had a window, I had also been looking forward to this
flight for quite some time. Although I would feel like getting right off the plane, I would wait to
see if the flight was full or not, then if possible relocate myself.

Now even if you had your seat assignment months ago (picked out especially based on the info on Seatguru), equipment swaps and other things out of your control could put you a seat you didn't ask for. You may end up in a windowless "window" seat. Sometimes you have to roll with the punches, as a seat assignment in many cases isn't final until the door closes and the plane pushes back from the gate.

But how often does that happen?

That would suck if someone is flying on the inaugural, and paid possibly extra for a window seat. Luckily I have never had to suffer that fate

I would ask for a different seat but if they didn't have another available window seat then I would just take the one available and go on with the flight.

If i don't get a window seat. I hope the flight isn't full so i can hopefully move to a window seat. If the flight is full than tough luck, i still enjoy flying even if i don't get a window seat.  Smile
