Help Me To Chose A East Coast City: Kind Of Stupid

Mon Sep 10, 2007 12:54 am

Hi A.netters,

I will be shortly visiting US on a biz trip. Though I have visited US many times in the past, it used to be for a very short time (3 weeks max). Now I need to stay in US for about 3-4 months. My company doesn't have a US presence yet. I need some expert help to chose a "base camp" in US.

My boss thinks a place in East coast (or where the time zone is EST) may be the best bet. There is no preference to any city yet as our customers are spread throughout US. I need to travel within US during my stay. My requirements about the base camp are this.

- It needs to be near a good metro airport
- I am a Skyteam junkie. It should be better served by ST members!
- It should have a lower cost of living with good access to public transport (very important!)
- It should have a bearable weather during winter (not freezing kind like Chicago!)

What would such plac be? Your help is highly appreciated.

Baltimore, MD

It has 3 airports all within about 1.5 hours of the city, ST is served at the airports, it maybe not be extremely cheap, but its bearable to live in and public transport is everywhere and winter isn't very cold.

I'm not suggesting it because that's where I live and have lived my entire life, Atlanta. Very well served by Skyteam (DL hub), pretty decent housing prices in comparison to the NYC area (EWR, JFK, LGA) and the D.C./Baltimore area. Not-so-great public transportation system (The train lines barely go outside of the Perimeter [a major highway loop around town], but some of the suburbs do have express buses to the nearest MARTA rail station or to downtown Atlanta, traffic is bad in many areas (as it is in many major metro areas like NYC and Washington D.C./Baltimore). The airport is close to downtown, and is connected to the public transportation network. Winter weather isn't too bad (we get cold, but not Chicago or NYC cold), nice spring and fall, summers are a bit warm and humid though.

Why not Tampa? Great airport..great climate..cost of living's lower than places like ATL (though that's changing)
several growing colleges and universities..and a sad tradition of low wages...

-Hmmm.. Raleigh-Durham (well, DL has a nice presence.. CO and NW are just typical hub flights)
-Hmmm.. Raleigh-Durham (well, there is the bus system for PubTrans)
-Hmmm.. Raleigh-Durham (actually has 4 seasons and only snows 1 or 2 times a winter

AND it's a very up and coming business center for ALL business types..

From what you have described it sounds like to me Atlanta may be your best bet......I won't go through the reasons again because Srbmod outlined them but I definitely agree.

Charlotte is another choice though public transit isn't the best (though we are getting ready to open up our first light rain line and already have a bus system) but cost of living is good and the city has pretty good weather year round (though the summer can get a bit toasty). Charlotte is also a large business center and is the second largest banking city in the USA behind NYC. The airport is nice but is definitely more of a Star Alliance hub.....saying that though Delta is the second largest airline at CLT and Delta has frequent flights to ATL as well as having flights to CVG, SLC, and LGA. CO has flights to EWR, CLE, and IAH, NWA has flights to DTW, MEM, and MSP.

Miami!! The best city on the East side of the USA. The only thing is that you cannot rely on public transportation because it is slow and the cost of living is not that cheap. The climate is not that different than India. Hot and Humid.
Other than that it is a fun, fun, fun, fun city.

I was born in NY, raised in NY, I love NY. ITs a tad expensive, but you are near beautiful Newark, NJ, home of Skyteam's best, CO. You could find a nice place in Jersey, close to the city, pretty cheaply. In addition, you can fly almost anywhere non-stop or at worse, 1 stop out of NYC.

Miami, cost of living is better than NYC,BOS,DC. Much nicer than PHL, Baltimore. Much bigger than Tampa or Raleigh. Miami is a true international city, MIA is as many know a huge international airport you can get just about anywhere in the world with one-stop cargo or passenger. Miami serves as the headquarters of Latin American operations for over 1400 multinational corporations, including American Airlines, Cisco, Disney, Exxon, FedEx, Microsoft, Oracle, SBC Communications, Sony, and Visa International. Several large companies are headquartered in or around Miami, including but not limited to: Alienware, AutoNation, Bacardi, Brightstar Corporation, Burger King, Carnival Cruise Lines, Citrix Systems, DHL, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Ryder Systems, and Spirit Airlines. Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami are among the nation's busiest ports of entry, especially for cargo from South America and the Caribbean. Additionally, downtown Miami has the largest concentration of international banks in the country. Miami is the home to the National Hurricane Center and the headquarters of the United States Southern Command, responsible for military operations in Central and South America.
A wide variety of languages are commonly spoken throughout the city. The City of Miami has three official languages: English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. As you can see it is a very influencial and international city on the east coast Also the weather is amazing! Two large cargo ports and a very fun city to be in.

NYC for sure if you haven't been there. Close to EWR (home of CO) so it should fit your needs.

In the US, you'll pretty much have a choice between either one or the other of those qualities. For example, New York City has possibly the best and most comprehensive public transportation system in the US, but the cost of living there is astronomical. On the other hand, Atlanta's public transportation is rather minimal, but you'd easily be able to make a car payment with the difference in housing cost between New York and Atlanta and have plenty of change left over.
