Vacation Ideas For Next Year

Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:32 am

I am trying to plan a trip with my wife next spring or early summer. It will be following our 10th wedding anniversary.
My wife has only been to Canada and lived here in the US.

I have been to a bunch of countries even a good tour of Europe in one summer for work work reason. I've seen Asia and spent some time in and other miscellaneous countries.

My question is Since my wife hasn't traveled much outside the US does anyone have suggestions where to go for our 10th anniversary vacation. (For example) she originally wants to visit Ireland because she wants to trace her genealogy in part but also mentioned Spain as a vacation also. I priced airfare briefly and it seems cheaper to fly to the UK or Ireland So if I was to go to the UK or Ireland I think British Airways or Aer Lingus had really good fares.

So being on a budget cheaper airfares would help.

On the other hand I wouldn't just limit my idea to those areas I considered revisiting Paris but the airfare seems double of that.

Someone mentioned last night PRG was good or Eastern Europe or even Turkey on CSA because they have competitive fares. When I started this thread last night it was deleted. So I might of missed some responses.

So If anyone has suggestions for a trip or airlines I should consider fron Reno or California that you can recommend or anything else I haven't thought of you're ideas would be appreciated as I think some peoples ideas may help me narrow down choices.

BTW it doesn't have to be limited to Europe ot could be any country.

Thanks, Mike

My family and I went to Hawaii last year and it was great, everything just beautiful. This summer I went to San Juan Island which is about 2 hours + 1 hour ferry from Seattle, just the place to just read a good book and get a bbq done late at night.

You said Europe, I went to Spain a long time ago and what we did was that we arrived in Madrid and we rented a car. We drove south to Toledo while we were staying in Madrid (1 hour drive). We left Madrid and drove north to Burgos some great landscapes there. Then we went to La Rioja (my dad is a wine enthusiast) the scenery and the tranquility was excellent. We stayed in La Rioja for about 2 nights in a 200 population town called San Millan de la Cogolla. The hotel was a nice 4 star monastery. After that we drove to San Sebastian (beach town at the north of Spain) stayed there 1 night. Finally drove all the way to Barcelona. On a foreign country you travel and see a lot more by car than by flying.

You also said UK and Ireland. I've never been to Ireland and I only know London. London is a gracious place, I went there in the winter and I got lucky since it snowed while I was there. My parents recently went to Edinburgh and they said that its a great place with all the castles and stuff like that. They flew from LHR to EDI, about 150 us dollars.

It is a bit long but hey they're travel ideas.
Hope I could have been of help.

It's not just the destination, it's the journey.

That sounds cool. I got to visit Palma De Mallorca for a week and that was fun but a lot of the nice beach areas don't come to life until the tourist season starting in May or June.

I had fun in London me and a couple of friends stayed in a hostel not to far from Buckingham Palace, and took several tours of the city by riding the bus. We spent some time in Piccadilly Circus that was a fun trip to say the least we saw a lot of the city overall and utilzed the London Underground.

Ireland I only flew in to SNN for a fuel stop I have considered renting a car and driving the countryside and seeing the Waterford Crystal Factory and possibly ferrying over to Scotland. However I know that it's pretty cheap to fly to the UK and Ireland in comparsen to some other parts of EU. However I know there are other places I could consider as well.

Greece and Turkey are great getaways for couples on a budget. The South Pacific is very romantic but very expensive to get to and so are the hotels. Eastern Europe can be dangerous but they have some awesome Soviet era jets in service. Latin America and Asia has lots of eye-candy so not good for couples.  Wink Then again, that's just me.
The beaches of Greece are incredible. It's also very historic just as Turkey and the people are very friendly. Food is a bargain too.
See if you could do an Aeroflot flight out of New York to Istanbul, Turkey through Moscow. That way you could fly on their TU-154 SVO-IST. The JFK-SVO leg will only be a 767 though.
Aeroflot fares are usually low.

Traveled to Switzerland last year. Definately one of the most beautiful countries I've been to. My suggestion would be CO to EWR and onward to ZRH. Have a good trip wherever you go though!
