What Modernday Aircraft Will Be A Missed?

Tue Oct 02, 2007 6:13 am

Today, a lot of people talk about how they missed the Concorde, 747, L1011, DC10 and 727 on main line routes. I was wondering what are some of todays airliners, that will be missed when they are retired 20 to 30 years from now? My vote A380, 777 and 787, What yours?

The 757.

What won't be missed? The 737 and A320 series.

Its lifespan on mainline routes probably is less than 20-30 years way, but I will miss the DC-9/MD-80/B717 series aircraft. If you fly coach and are part of a party of two people (yourself and your significant other), the 2-3 seating on the DC-9/MD-80/B717 allows you to choose 2 seats on one side of the aircraft thereby avoiding the middle seat issue on a fully loaded 737. If my wife and I are flying coach, we prefer 2-3 seating in the DC-9/MD-80/B717 over the 3-3 seating of a 737 any day.

I will miss the 757 for it's amazing take offs and great looks, the MD11 is a few years when the last pax variants go in for conversion, and the MD80 variants in 20-30 years time when even they cease to ply the skies.

Overall though, I'll miss the BAe 146. Great aircraft, versatile, comfortable, just a little bit too fuel thirsty for most operators these days.

This one hardly will make my list. As far as my (limited) experience with BAe146/AVRO's stands today, I only have negative views of this a/c in my mind, but this appears to be more the fault of the airline itself rather than that of the manufacturer.
Two things the manufacturer is to blame for are:
- Its rather slow speed is a bit annoying, especially when flying longer sectors.
- The unique sound that is created when flaps are being set for landing. No other modern a/c generates such a sound (and so loud, even on the ground).

  • One type I will miss is the Fokker 70 (more than the F100).
Great 2-3 seating, full-size overhead bins, own air-stairs, rather quiet.
(I deliberately am neglecting a somewhat indifferent dispatch reliability in KL's hands here ...)
  • Saab 2000
  • One already dieing breed: A300 / A310
  • In the more distant future: A321 (not 318, 319 and 320), 330, 340-600 (but not -200, -300).

Ahh, yes, I had forgotten about the Fokkers, wonderful little aircraft. Wouldn't mind trying out the LCY route at some point with Austrian.

I can see what you mean about the 146, the flaps especially! I did find myself cursing it earlier this year after 5 hours sat on an RJ100, that was painful, but aside of that I just love it for the shape and the power on takeoff from short runways, which otherwise would not see a jet service at all.

That, of course, is a valid point.  checkmark

Recently I ended up in a RJ100 HB-IYQ (ex G-CFAH by CitiExpress) that still had the 6-abreast seating installed with only 5 seats sold. The problem was, that unlike all (or "most") a/c in LX's fleet they did not sell / assign the seats 2-3 but 3-2, making my 07B a middle seat, whereas on most other LX's RJs it would have been an (welcomed) aisle seat ...  Sad
Flight was fully booked, hot in the cabin, delayed and making progress to my homebase rather slowly (compared to AB's Airbuses on that route).

I'll miss the DC-9/MD-80, the JT8D's are classic. The MD-90 will also be missed as it's a very unique aircraft and the quietest airliner I've ever flown. I expect the 717 to still be in service in 20 years, but you never know. I'll miss the 757 for being such an overpowered aircraft, and the 744 because I think a 747 looks best with winglets. Lastly, the A340 for the simple fact of not being a twin. The 777 will still be around in 20-30 years. The 737 and A320 would have to be at the very bottom of my list for mainline aircraft.

Modern aircraft that I already miss which are gone or very few and far between include: MD-11, A300/310, F100
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

With most of todays aircraft looking pretty much the same in design and just different in size i wonder if maybe an airline or two will be more missed than the aircraft...some great airlines have gone in the recent past and a few now are just holding it together.
