In any case it might be a good option to bring along a bottle of water onto the plane.
If you don't want to buy it past security check, bring along a empty bottle (this will pass through security; just let it unscrewed and put it well visible through the X-ray machine) and fill up with tap-water past security.
Furthermore, I prefer to bring along something to eat shoud it turn out that the food offered is a) not enogh and/or b) does not suit my taste. Just make sure, that you will have consumed all sandwiches etc. before deplaning at ORD
due to the import restrictions for many types of foodstuff (this restriction usually does not apply to commercially produced candy bars like Snickers, Twix, etc.). The USDA is more focussed on meat products, vegetables and living plants.
