Going PHL-PDX In December

Hey everyone,

I will likely be traveling PHL-PDX in mid-late December. I will most likely be buying a one-way F class ticket. I've done a fair amount of searching, and I've found a number of options for around $600, including:

US through LAS (they don't run the nonstop on Saturdays, which is the day I'll likely be traveling) (752 and 733)
DL through SLC (757 and 757 or MD-90)
UA through ORD (A319 or 733/735 and 757)

What would you suggest, of these three and are there any other options (for similar or cheaper price) that I've overlooked? Even if the US nonstop was available to me, I think I'd avoid the late-evening Eastern time departure/late-night Pacific time arrival. I don't mind taking an early-morning flight. Also, I love 757s and always try to book them! I'd been thinking about avoiding ORD in December even though I'd like to try UA...

What are your suggestions?
Which airline has the best F product for this price? (I know I'm only getting a bigger seat, maybe a little free food, etc., but I feel it'll be worth it for a transcon, especially given that the price differences between F and Y on this route at this time aren't that large.
What's the best airport to connect in? I've been to ORD (only the AA concourses), but not to SLC or LAS.

I'd avoid US' First Class at all costs - vastly inferior to Delta and United's offerings, especially on this long of a route. Delta's first class has improved by putting glassware in first class, food isn't that bad (just had another grilled chicken breast on a DL First Transcon on Monday). United might be the best bet for true in-flight First Class service though - you'll get options for your meal, and I've heard good things about the UA First product compared to US/DL/NW/CO. The only drawback, as you mentioned, is ORD. If you can route via SFO or LAX, that might be a good thing to do.

Of that group, UA will by far have the best F service, especially on SEA-ORD. That would be my choice.

I would recommend DL thru SLC. You will get to experience an MD-90 which is a great and less common aircraft. You will get pretty good service on PHL-SLC either breaksfast or dinner depending on when you are going and some great views of the beautiful mountains landing and taking off out of SLC.

I agree i would avoid the US F product at all costs, its not good. UA offers a good F product but connecting in ORD you are always running the risk of delays and missing connections etc

dont quote me on this one but alot of Dls 757 are getting the personal tvs on board which makes for a great experience with on demand games, hbo, movies and updated cabins. not sure if phl is one of the slc flights that has the upgrade yet but if either flight is then i think its a no brainer

Can you do CO F? They have the best domestic F option. They have some delicious gumbo served on IAH-PDX.

I heard that the service in US-first recently improved - at least the website lists meal options in first that are actually choices other than bowtie pasta. However I don't know what routes they run on, and at any rate DL and UA are still going to be better.

Since the US non-stop isn't running, here are your one-stop options that offer first class service:
AA via ORD or DFW
US via LAS or PHX
CO via IAH
DL via ATL, CVG, or SLC
NW via MSP or DTW
UA via ORD, DEN, LAX, or SFO

From everything I've gathered, just in terms of on-board service and in terms of airport quality, I'd take them in this order:
1. CO (IAH)
2. AA (DFW)
3. AA (ORD)
4. UA (DEN)
5. UA (SFO)
6. UA (ORD)
7. UA (LAX)
8. DL (CVG)
9. DL (SLC)
10. DL (ATL)
11. NW (DTW)
12. NW (MSP)
13. US (PHX)
14. US (LAS)

However, some of these connection airports are more or less out of the way. IAH is rather out of the way on this route. Also, these won't cost the same so some may be much more expensive than others. At any rate, of the airlines you mentioned, I'd say that UA via ORD is the best of those options.

Let us know what you decide - personally (and I'm a Delta fan, obviously), I'd go with Delta. Chances are you'll get a 757 with PTVs, which are amazing. And the MD-90s are very nice aircraft.

Looks like I'll be going with the United itinerary. I'm very excited for the 757 and for Channel 9!

In terms of meals, what will be offered in F for these flights? Anything vegetarian/vegan-friendly? (PHL-ORD is 6 am - 7:18 am, ORD-PDX is 10:10 am departure.) Thanks!

All the United.com website says is:

It wasn't more specific than this unfortunately. Usually, however, with a choice of entrees there will probably be a vegetarian, but not necessarily vegan, option (typically pasta).

Apparently, however, you can request a lacto-ovo vegetarian or a vegan option 24 hours in advance. This is probably something to call Reservations about as they will have better details, as the website is vague. The number is 1-800-UNITED-1.
