In A Perfect World, IFE Would Be.......

Sat Oct 13, 2007 3:49 pm

Just kind of curious to see what kind of things you all would create or add to in flight entertainment that doesn't currently exist.

I myself like having ATC piped through the audio channels but would like to see it taken one step further. For aircraft with individual monitors for IFE I would like a channel with a cockpit instrument repeater. I know I am a giant nerd right? I still think it would be cool to look at thinks like fuel flow, airspeed, HSI, EADI, FMS display, etc. Yes I know that often times the airline will put a channel with you airplanes progress over the Earth with miles per hour, alt, etc but I find that too simple for my tastes.

Well according to the dictionary, nerd is defined as: an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit. With as many meets as we hold here at a.net, I beg to differ.

Geek would be the appropriate alternative with it being defined as expert or enthusiast

Actually in a perfect world IFE would actually work 100% of the time. Honestly, I don't see why the problem with adding a computer interface that would allow the user (albiet a fee lol) to connect to the internet in real time. I know there are some airlines that do have that wireless feature for those who are traveling with their laptop.

In 1995, when Aer Lingus acquired an A330-301 from Air Inter, it was still in a domestic config (with about 400 seats), and no IFE. The aircraft was used for flights to JFK for the Summer. As there was no IFE, they had live performers throughout the cabin. Better than noting on a seven hour flight I suppose!

Always wonderers if this "last and final boarding call" is in fact THE last and final boarding call.

...the same as Emirates. An actual CHOICE of things to watch, not just cheap middle of the road B movies, and endless repeats of Everyone Loves Raymond.

A good choice with live ATC, cockpit instrument repeaters, cameras, a good choice of movies and TV.

Housed in a box that does NOT take up half the space under the seat.

Enhanced air show that you control with more than just the usual info, with a flightaware type system that allows you to track other flight in the air at the same time. Outside camera views would be nice. Other than that, a window and my music is all I need.

Unnecessary, as all passengers would be happy without entertainment, stop complaining when they fly, etc etc etc.

Barring that, I'd say filled with all the music and shows I like, regardless of whether anyone else cares what they are. So, perhaps, a better answer may be linked to the Internet so that AVOD isn't limited to the programmed choices on board. I could request any song, watch any movie, etc. For added enjoyment, the headphones would leak no sound outward at all, so that if I have the volume up others can't hear it. And, on a combination of Virgin America's service-requesting features and Continental's Executive Meal option, I could schedule my cabin service at the times I want it. Granted, this doesn't mean that as a Y pax I can request a multi-course meal on a two-hour flight. What this would mean is that if the flight that day is offering a dinner service and a breakfast service, I could schedule those in for specific times during the flight so I can sleep whenever I want. Also, this would even mean that the f/a would wake me when its time for breakfast. All in one user-friendly interface that doesn't break.

Live sports on channels 1 through 20
Live camera feeds on channels 21 through 30 with latitude and longitude displayed and ATC as audio

That's all I'd need, but suspect the other passengers would be bored silly.
