Longest Passenger Flight In 747

Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:06 pm

Yes I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the longest non stop flight for commercial travel in 747. It seems the answer changes as do Airlines etc but it is hard to get a clear or current (with in 90 days up to current operation). The last I read was from a book, which said there was a nonstop from ORD to HKG. but it only said the time or average duration. Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. Even if you don't know the source or date rather I would still like to know any best guess or longest you are aware of even if it is no longer flying.

Not too sure, but at a guess I'd say MEL-LAX is surely up there, 6883nm.

Correct but this is operated by 744ER with hgher MTOW/Range then the 744 and with 6773nm ORD-HKG this flight always takes longer than the slightly longer LAX-MEL becuse of the by far higher head winds then on LAX-MEL.

And this operated by a standard 744 with UA  Wink

None of those threads answers the guy's question.

It's not currrent, but probably the longest-ever scheduled 744 nonstop was ATL-JNB.

That is true... however QF has at times operated it with standard 744. The 744ER is still classed as a 744 in any case... is a shame that only QF ordered them as pax a/c...

SYD-JNB must be one of the longest also... 6862nm also into headwinds.

That just pips SYD-JNB at 6,862 miles but JFK-JNB with SAA 744 was 7,969 miles and I have done both.... LOOOONG!!

United's ORD-HKG is up there at about 6700-6800 nm. It was the longest flight in the world when it was introduced back around 1997. I believe the longest scheduled pax 747 flight ever was United's JFK-HKG flight, which I believe was discontinued due to 9/11. It was nearly 7000 nm. I've also heard that it was often weight-restricted.

Not if JFK-JNB was still nonstop then. Don't recall if ATL-JNB had started by then.

How long timewise was this in the 744? The 346 covers the distance in 16½ hours, but I believe the 744 cruises faster.

7014 nm according to the Great Circle Mapper. Bound to be a bit longer. IIRC we passed on the other "side" of the pole so did not go straight the whole way.

How fast did the 744 cover this? CX schedules this at 16½ hours but the 744 is a mite faster in cruise.

I'd imagine a little more than 15 hours on the JFK-HKG leg, as CO's EWR-HKG flight is generally 15 hours, 15 minutes to 15.5 hours long, and the 744 cruises at Mach 0.86 compared to 0.84 for the 777. I know UA's ORD-HKG flight is generally about 14.5 hours, maybe a bit less - ORD-HKG is about 300-350 nm. shorter. The return flights out of HKG are probably close to an hour shorter.

This flight is nonstop via DKR. I believe it used to be a 744 and it may have been nonstop on the IAD-Johannesburg leg, but the flight is now an A343 one-stop both ways. Recently it was also an A346, which was nonstop eastbound and 1-stop westbound.

In the cold light of day, wot the hell do you do to pass the time?
My current longest flight is 12 hours, and I was climbing the walls, even in Club Class.
I plan to fly to AKL soon via Singapore and take a 2 day break there, before flying on,should I take some sleeping pills, get drunk, do yoga, or upgrade to First Class? Not looking forward to all that "dead" time.
you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

"Often" is not a good word to describe it. "Heavily" would be a better word to describe it!!! CX operates JFK-HKG nonstop on the 346 or with a fuel-stop in YVR on the 744. UA operated JFK-HKG nonstop on the 744, with weight restrictions upwards of 80 seats.

The 744 is currently the fastest-cruising widebody.

What about KE's JFK-ICN route? My friend flew that this summer, and he remembered that he was on a 747 (well, he remembered that the plane had a small second floor, but same difference).

I think he said that it was 16 hours or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that honor belongs to the Lockheed L-1011. Cruising speed of mach .90, compared to mach .85/.86 on the B744.

IIRC the 1011 will cruise at .84 and as low as .80 for LRC. The 744 will cruise between .855-.86.

Do you define "long" in terms of distance taveled (miles) or duration of flight time (hours)? You are getting both types of answers. One measure of long is impacted by winds aloft and the other isn't.

Still standing as the longest flight in my logbook is LAX-MEL in 'standard' Boeing 747-438 VH-OJQ: 15 hours and 40 minutes. The next after that was same aircraft same route in 15 hours 14 minutes.

checkmark  Not only do you have to take into account the headwinds, but a fully loaded 744 (or A340 for that matter) can't make it out of JNB due to its high elevation. However, I believe the 77L be able to fly out of there with a relatively full load of pax/fuel as DL is likely planning on using it to fly ATL-JNB-ATL nonstop, correct me if I'm wrong.

I once flew SIN-LHR with BA on a 747-400 once and due to really really strong headwinds it was almost 16 hours and the captain announced that we might have to stop at FRA for fuel en route!

That's definitely one of the longer 747 pax flights, longer than LHR-SIN (a shade under 6000 nm.)which is the longest nonstop route from LHR. But there are many 747-400 flights that are longer, such as SFO-SYD, LAX-SYD, LAX-MEL, LAX-HKG, ORD-HKG, and SFO-HKG. ATL-ICN (flown by a KE 744 in addition to the DL 772) is also probably up there.

For the sake of a flashback - when PA was operating SYD-LAX with the 747SP it was the longest at the time. I did this flight in Aug 1984. Long but enjoyable.

And to add the humour aspect - I have been on flights of less than 200nm that were over 2 hrs in the air - thanks to many many circles...

Just wondering, couldnt anet "publish" a list of all these superlatives, because I used to start these threads too, but I realized we all get conflicting answers, I guess the point of it is someone starts a thread, we discuss our opinions and finally find the correct answer  Big grin
