Poll: Would You Use A GPS-triggered Audio Channel?

Fri Nov 02, 2007 3:30 pm

IFE product idea: As you're looking out the window combatting boredom, would you listen to a guided tour of the US (or anywhere else, actually), triggered by GPS? So if you're flying over the Saint Louis arch, you'd hear, "on your left, the Saint Louis arch," and then a mini-documentary about it. It would have music too... when you're flying over New Jersey, you'd hear lots of Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra. Would you listen to this if you were on an aisle seat, to hear the stories and music, and to know where you are? Would you listen to it if it were integrated with the Moving Map system? We're TV producers and are considering developing this, if there's interest. Thanks!

That sounds really cool. Would you differentiate content based on if the passenger was seated on the left or the right side of the plane? Or on the aisle? If the arch is on our left, I'd probably still be interested if I were in the aisle or at the right window, but I'd be a lot more interested if I'm at the left window. It would also be nifty if the system could be aware of the weather, since effectively every seat is a middle seat if it's cloudy out.

Integrating with the moving map, and providing still images and/or video of the landmark would also be very cool, so the user knows exactly *where* in that vast landscape out the window they're supposed to look for this landmark.

I'm a computer programmer and self-professed map/GPS nerd, and have actually thought about doing something like this in my car. For instance, I have a certain song that I always like to play when I cross into Michigan. Not valid for aircraft, but in a car I might like to be able to quickly find out what area code I'm in, if I see a billboard for a restaurant or something that only has a 7-digit phone number. If you need software guys, and you don't mind that I likely don't live anywhere near you, send me a private message.

Sounds fantastic. It's be great to have as i'm a temporary insomniac when flying!! Just make sure that there is something to say when we' re flying over water- like- This spot that we are flying over right now is where the Titanic sank. etc.

I look forward to seeing this in the future!!
