Airline With Most Diverse Fleet ...

Thu Nov 08, 2007 11:09 pm

I am in BOM for work and staring out of the window I was amused that the merged Air India had in its fleet the A300, A310, A320 (A319/A320/A321), A330 (L), B737 (B732, B738), B747 (B74D,B744), B757 (L), B767 (L), B777 (B772, B77W), ATR, D228 and soon B787.

I understand some of these aircrafts are on lease, but I was wondering if any airline operated such a diverse fleet at any point. Also, has AI ever operated the B720 or the A340? I seem to recall they used to have a leased B720 in the fleet in the late 80s operating to NBO with continuing to ACC/LOS. If it did operate, AI is the only airline to have in its fleet nearly all Boeing AND Airbus types. Any other airlines coming close?

Curious and bored,
A.

PS: I DO NOT think this is obviously something to be proud of   ... so lets focus on facts and not value judgments  .

The Chinese carriers seemingly have a 'one of everything' approach;

China Eastern:
A300, A312, A319, A320, A321, A332, A333, A343, A346, B733, B73G, B738, B763, BAe141, BAe143, CRJ200, EMB145, MD82, MD90

Air China:
A319, A320, A332, A343, B733, B735, B736, B73G, B738, B742F, B744, B744F, B752, B762, B763, B772, BAe141

China Southern:
A300, A319, A320, A321, A332, ATR72, B733, B735, B73G, B738, B744F, B752, B772, EMB145, MD82, MD90

That does include aircraft which may be stored though - it's difficult to accurately know.

My favourite varied fleet though would be that of Asian Spirit;

BAe141, BAe142, BAeATP, DHC7, CN235, Let410, MD82, YS-11

KLM/Cityhopper has a rather diverse fleet, especially the widebodies.

F70
F100
733
734
738
739
A332
MD-11
772ER
744/Combi

By the same token, NW has some unusual combinations of aircraft.

DC-9-30/40/50
A319/320
752/753
A332/333
787-8 (soon to be)
744

In this day in age of commonality, a fleet with aircraft from three or four different manufacturers is more diverse than one with a broad range of variants from a larger family, IMO.

Not too many years ago (Circa 2000-2001), DL had a pretty wide variety in their fleet:

727-200
737-200
737-300
737-800
757-200
767-200
767-300
767-300ER
767-400ER
777-200ER
L-1011
MD-88
MD-90
MD-11

These days, it's not as diverse:

737-800
MD-88
MD-90
757-200
767-300
767-300ER
777-200ER

If you throw in the Delta Connection airlines, it does get more interesting:

CRJ-100
CRJ-200
CRJ-440
CRJ-700
CRJ-900
ATR-72-210
EMB-120ER
ERJ-135
ERJ-145

Since you went the more technical route in some cases, add the 767-400ER to the current fleet, as well as 757-200ER (different layout and winglets). Also, since you split the domestic versus international 767's, don't forget about the 767-3P6ER's and sole 767-324ER with the 6 main door configurations.

As far as regionals go, YV has to be up there. They operate

Beech 1900
Dash 8
CR2
CR7
CR9
E145

All that's missing is the ATR and the E-Jet.

Going back a few years, NWA probably had one of the most varied fleets of any airline:

DC9-10
DC9-30
DC9-40
DC9-50
727-200 **
A319
A320
A320 OW
757-200 (5500)
757-200 (5600)
757-200 (5600) OW
757-300 (5800)
757-300 (5800) OW
DC10-30
DC10-40
A330-200
A330-300
747-200 (high density)
747-200
747-400

** And, if you really want to nit-pick, NWA even operated 5x different models of 727.

727-251
727-251/Adv
727-225 (ex-Eastern)
727-2S7 (ex-North Central / Republic)
727-2M7 (ex- Hughes Air West / Republic)

I think they still had 737-200's at the time too, as well as possibly 747-100's. I think they kept those up to late-2000 or early-2001. Also, UA never had any true 767-200ER's. All UA 762's were delivered as 767-222. The pictures of 767-222/ER that you see on a.net were custom modifications by UA. They were given all the extra equipment needed for ETOPS flights, although the 762 was seldom used on International routes at UA. LHR and South America were typically the extent of their border-crossings. Again though, they were not true 762ER's, they were just designated as such. They had smaller fuel capacities than factory 762ER's, as well as MGTOW's lower than factory 762ER's.

Also, didn't UA have a handful of 772ER's by 2000 also?? Or did they only have 772A's at the time??

Quoting Evan767 (Reply 18):
Does anyone know the answer or is everyone just going to state their favorite airline's current fleet?

The question being asked seems to be unique in that there isn't one "official" answer to it. So, everyone is just listing off the different fleets for comparison purposes.

Besides, it's not really a competition of people posting the fleets of their favorite airlines, as having the most diverse fleet is a bit of an ambivalent title to hold!!

If you speak of airlines that operate aircraft of nearly all major manufacturers Lufthansa would be on top of my list.

No mate 12 types (mainline & Cityflyer) 23 types if you include flying school and franchise operations, can you name another airline on the planet that operates (or flies in its colours) an aircraft as small as the bn islander to the boeing 747.400......No......didn't think so

Doesn't matter....I found a more diverse fleet, even if you count your Piper to 747. Here is DL and DLC as operated currently:

737-732 (on order)
737-832
757-232
757-212
757-2Q8
757-26D
767-332
767-332/ER
767-3P6/ER
767-324/ER
767-432/ER
777-232/ER
777-232/LR (on order)

CRJ-100 ER
CRJ-200 ER
CRJ-700
CRJ-701 ER
CRJ-702
CRJ-900
CRJ-900 ER
CRJ-900 NG

EMB-120 RT
EMB-120 ER
ERJ-135 LR
ERJ-145 ER
ERJ-145 LR
ERJ-145 XR
ERJ-170-100SE
ERJ-170-200LR (on order)

ATR-72-212

Beech 1900D

I'm not counting flying school or franchise operations, and I still came up with......33 types, just for DL and DLC alone.

Shall I continue?? How about FedEx's 727 fleet alone:

727-225/Adv(F)
727-227/Adv(F)
727-232/Adv(F)
727-233/Adv(F)
727-247/Adv(F)
727-277/Adv(F)
727-2D4/Adv(F)
727-2S2F/Adv
727-2S2F/Adv(RE)

Plus 757's on the way, A300, A310, DC10-10, MD10-10, DC10-30, MD10-30, MD11, and all the FedEx Feeder birds...

Oh yeah REAL diverse...........how many 757/767/CRJ/ERJ types can you mention, oops forgot the 727s....just looks like your clutching at straws.

So what your basically saying is that if an airline operates 9 hundred different variations of the same type of aircraft then that classes them as diverse? Don't think so.

BA still wins..............until you come up with a better answer?

You know, you are absolutly right!! Your PA-28 Warriors and DHC-1 Chipmunks operating daily LHR-CDG and LHR-FRA is not clutching at straws at all.

Nice try.

I understand that argument, but I think the entire point of the OP was to just find the airline with the most diverse fleet, not just private / flight school planes that wore the airline colors at some point.

I may have to go through the list better, but I think the OP's example of Air India might be the victor with the most diverse fleet.

Im surprised no one has mentioned US Airways yet:

Airbus A319/320/321/332/333 (A340s on tap as well)
Boeing 737-300/-400 (also had -200)
Boeing 757-200
Boeing 767-200ER

In their past (including PSA, Piedmont, America West and Allegheny)
Boeing 727-100/-200
Boeing 737-100-200
Boeing 747-200
Douglas DC-9 (various series)
McDonnell Douglas DC-9-80
Fokker 28

= Yes. All I am concerned with is regular ops. Not flying school or special flights, etc.

= Actually, I think Air France comes up on top (by one) - Air India is second - and then Delta and BA?

Cheers,
A.

PS: If you do a fleet type :: total fleet ratio, Air India definitely has the MOST diverse fleet. Does that make sense?

I'm a bit surprised too.
BTW, you forgot to add the E190 (which are mainline) to the current fleet list. Big grin
Also add the A350 to the on tap list and at present, US does not operate the A332.

Not to nitpick, but your past fleet should should only include types that actually wore US titles. IIRC, HP retired the 731 & 742 BEFORE the merger.

Other USExpress fleet types:
E-145
E-170
E-175
CRJ-200
CRJ-900
Saab340
Dornier 328 (prop. version) - may have since been retired
