Best Airport Chinese Restaurant?

Thu Nov 15, 2007 5:49 am

Hi,

I'm in search of some recommendations to eat at in major US Airports, especially Chinese places.

I just got a new job and plan to fly about 180k a year so I'm going to be living off airport food.

As for Chinese places, I have to say the Chinese place in Concourse F of PHL is terrible, as is the one in terminal 2 at JFK, yet the one at LGA is US Air terminal is managable.

I was wondering if anywhere is decent, specifically ATL, CLT, IAD?

On a side note, I love the Qdoba in Terminal C at CVG and the Quiznos in Concourse B at CMH. Is Chipotle in any airports in the US, maybe DEN?

Also would love to hear about any of your recommendations about any other place to eat, especially non-chain restraurants.

Thanks,
AirOne

There is (at least a few years ago) a Panda Express in the Rotunda between terminal 2 and 3 at ORD. While it is not great it is decent. If you are traveling through Las Vegas I would recommend Port-of-Subs for Sandwiches, I worked there as a kid and they were quite good. I would stay away from the pre-maid sandwiches and ask for a fresh made one.
I have also found that the MSP and SEA have really good options.

There was a thread on this recently - do a search.

I think PIT had the best Chinese?

There is a Manchu Wok at CLE and that or Panda at PDX.

DEN and SEA have some of the best selections I have seen. AUS is also not too bad. I haven't run across any really good Chinese food at any airport. It is all pretty normal. Kinda like the kind you would get in a food court at a mall. Big grin

The Sweetwater Taproom in ATL is awesome. Great beer. Food is normal pub fare. I think it is in Terminal B.

I would steer clear of that Manchu Wok in CLE. I ate at it once in three years of working a lot out of that hub, and it is by far some of the worst food of any kind I have had in my life.

The best Chinese Food in an airport is certainly at SFO. We have Harbor Village in international A, a famous, local, highly rated Chinese place.

CLT has decent Chinese, plus you should try the other one at PHL. Terminal C/D, not the F terminal. C/D is better, but not great by any means. Still, it is probably some of the better food at PHL.

SFO also has some good Chinese food.

I have not seen Chipotle anywhere.

I nearly got sick from eating the chinese at ATL. It was overpriced, and not very tasty. A chimichanga would've been healthier.

There's a Manchu Wok in T3 at JFK near the gate where the DL NCE flight used to go from - not bad Sweet and Sour Pork. Trouble is, Chinese food makes you thirsty which is never ideal before a long flight.

There is a Panda Express on E, Manchu Wok locations in the Atrium & A, and a Mandarin Express on B.

There's a Qdoba on E, a Moe's (Another Fresh-Mex type place like Qdoba) on C (They do an awesome breakfast burrito). There's a Chick-Fil-A on Concourse A. Checkers has a location on B (At least they did a few years ago). The ATL website is not completely up to date on eateries, with the exception of Concourse E.

Sipping on some Sweetwater right now (2006 Festive Ale). I may have to slide by there next week before my ATL-LAS flight (While there is a Sam Adams bar/restaurant on the concourse my flight has been going out of, I'd rather have Sweetwater over Sam Adams, even though I like both brands.).

Unfortunately there is no such thing as Chinese food in the US. It has been americanized beyond belief. If you want Chinese go to China. When in the US stick with what we are famous for - THE BIG MAC.

Wok-n-Roll at PIT. Hands down! The one in the D concourse is the best, located right across NW's gates at D81 and D83. The other's in the Core (AirMall), but different.

I know the owner there are they would be happy to hear that.  Smile
They also have another restaurant here in the city that is much better than the airport.

Airport food general sucks. I didn't try the Chinese Food at HGK however. I will next time I am there and have a long layover.

Panda Express is the best of the three above...and it is fantastic.

Altho, traveling thru ATL, I must say you will not be without food choices.

They really do run the gamut there, a lot better choices there then it was a few years back when I was working out there. Definitely light years from the way the food choices were back when the Midfield Complex opened. Back then, the food choices were pretty much generic snack bars/restaurants like you see at a convention center or sports arena. The prices were really high back then. Let's say that what you'd pay for a meal at one of the eateries right now is close to the same price you'd pay back in the 1980s. A $6-7 meal back then was what double what you'd spend outside of the airport for a similar meal @ McDonald's, Burger King, etc. And the food wasn't all that great.

Even though there is a small markup at the Burger Kings, Starbucks and other chains in airports, they are stll better than what was there before.
I liked Hong Kong's airport as they have a 7-11 and the prices are the same as outside the airport. You can go in and buy a can of beer for approx. $1 where as here in SFO, you can only get one in a bar it's going to cost you at least $7 plus tip.

meh who needs Chinese food when you have sushi bars in terminals?

I think we have a Panda Express in the Mac here in DTW, but we have two sushi bars that I'd gladly walk into before a flight.  bouncy

Be careful, you will turn into many of those typically overweight business travellers that are desperate for an upgrade because their stomach is too large!!! Do yourself a favor and try to purchase food items such as trail mix or nutri-grain cereal bars to tide you over until you land... your body will thank you for it in the long-run!

The one in D, they cook your food to order so it's nice and warm.
