DL Or AA To GIG? On Coach

Mon Nov 19, 2007 3:05 am

I'm debating here wether to fly MCO - GIG with Delta or AA on coach. Do Delta's 763 have folding headrests on coach? I'm an Exec Plat on AA, but I want I need one more trip to Brazil to achieve Plat on Delta for next year..

I think it might depend on the type of 767-300 ER used, I think some do have folding headrests while some do not, but not 100% sure.

That being said, I'd go for Platinum on Delta and maintain top-tier status on two different airlines and alliances. If I'm going to be in coach either way, I'd take making PM on Delta than just furthering top-tier on AA.

I would take DL on the trip, they have good international economy service, flew them to europe acouple times on a 777, great. Also the 767-300s i have been on have the folding headrest.

Hi Tony,

You know my opinion lol !
Go for the Platinum Status and also for the better service. Forget about PTV, take with you a portable DVD or a good Ipod.

I just flew with AA last month LAX-MIA-GIG-MIA-LAX in Y and my advice to you is take Delta! They couldn't possibly be worse. AA's cabin service on my flights was non existant. I would even consider flying MCO-IAD and taking UA's IAD-GIG flight before taking AA from MIA again.

I'm a strong defender of Delta, however just a warning: Delta is currently flying Ex-Gulf Air 763ER's on this route. These aircraft are known to have some of the most deterioted interiors of the fleet. There will also be no air nozzles or PTV's. With that said, Delta service is excellent compared to American's and I'd probably choose whichever you value more - service or cabin interior.

Headrests seem to be hit or miss depending on whether or not you get the updated leather seats.

No. PTV's in coach (or lack thereof) on DL 763's is becoming the new "NW DC-9 thread."  Wink
Evan767 pretty much hit the nail in the head of what to expect from DL in terms of their longhaul Y product on 767's. Service seems to be hit or miss on AA, but DL lately has become much more consistent in terms of offering good FA service. I flew them longhaul about a year ago (with one of the flights being on a 763), and they were great. Yes, there was the lack of a certain seatback IFE device on the 767 flight, but the FA's were great and the interior was comfortable/in great condition. They constantly came around checking on everyone and offering coffee, tea, and water. In addition to that, the meals they served were good, especially the veggie pizza that was served about 1.5-2 hours before arrival in ATL. The 767 actually had slightly more foot room underneath the seats than the 777's, which probably had to do with the IFE boxes.

I also say Delta. Two years ago I would have said AA, but during that time AA's international service has deteriorated significantly, while Delta's has improved significantly, and nowadays Delta is simply the better choice. Same goes for domestic flights too, although in that case it is more a case of American's product declining faster than Delta's rather than any improvement on Delta's part.

No, Delta's domestic product has significantly changed since 1 year ago. For the better.

Also note that DL provides one complimentary alcoholic beverage with your main meal in international Y and should also still be providing a recyclable amenity kit in Y containing eyeshades, earplugs, and even moisturiser cream. AA's international Y service has unfortunately deteriorated quite a bit over the years to the point they can't even offer a pack of peanuts of crackers with the drink service before the main meal.

Well, I guess it depends whether you include the Delta Connection or not (ASA and Comair horrendous delays do not make a good airline, even if the on-board product is nice). DL Mainline has improved for sure, but with all the RJs they run, passengers aren't happy being delayed all the time. That was the point I was trying to make, I suppose.
