Has Anyone Ever Been The Only Pax On The Plane?

Fri Dec 07, 2007 7:00 pm

This happened to me two years ago, on a flight from ROA-ATL, I was the only passenger who was scheduled for the last flight out (around 6pm... I wish I would've saved my boarding pass), and for the two hour flight, I was the only passenger on board the CRJ. It was a pretty nice ride overall, and I must admit that I loved the private jet feeling  Smile.

It was purely by luck that I got this flight, and it remains my favorite DL RJ flight to date. And it made me wonder, has anyone else had any similar occurrence? (perhaps on a larger aircraft even?  Smile)

They still operated the flight with just one pax??? Wouldn't it be more economical for the airline to just cancel the flight and put you up in a hotel?

And it was a CO reward ticket too  Smile. The flight needed to go back to ATL, I guess...

Not necessarily when you look at fleet movements rather than a single flight at a time.

Maybe the plane was flying ATL - ROA - ATL and the roundtrip made enough money on the back of the inbound leg alone (it does happen). Another possible scenario was that the plane was coming in from another city into ROA at a profit, and that the plane was needed in ATL the next morning for another flight, so with or without passengers (even just one), that plane was going to fly from ROA to ATL anyhow...

Back on topic, I have been the only passenger on a few flights, but they were not commercial flights either (no, not GA). Not exactly the same thing, but still the same weird feeling to be the only one among 50 or 100 empty seats.

Absolutely. There are many other implications to consider.
-Cargo revenue
-Aircraft repositioning
-Reputation, canceling does not look good
-Slot maintenance,

I've been the only passenger to board at BRS on a MAN-BRS-PLH flight. There were other people on the aircraft though who came all the way down. Aside of that, the nearest I can get is 3 people (+ crew) on the PLH-NQY sector a couple of times.

I flew from Union Island to Carriacou, I got to the airport nice and early (it's an international flight, even though it's only 9 miles), the check-in lady said "Oh, you're here - we can go now" - I was the only person on the flight (it was an Islander) - I got to sit up front next to the driver, it was great. The biggest delay was finding the passport guy to let me out of the country (he was outside having a fag).

It's never happened to me, but my mom was on a flight from DTW to GSO a few years ago with as I recall 3 passengers onboard.

Yeah, I think that may be the reason my mom called the CRJ a "nice little plane."  Smile

1980. April or May. Coming home from ERI to MCI via ORD. I remember the trip well because I made it for a family funeral. Was on an Allegheny BAC-111 from ERI to ORD. We were late. Ran to the TW gate to make my flight to MCI. When I got there, the TW agent smiled said -- "What did you run for? It's a barn in there." I didn't catch the drift, as I was frazzled from running. Went down the jetway -- there were 4 of us on the 707!!! One guy in F. And three of us in Y. The service was exceptional to say the least. The FA's gave us Y pax the first class meal. (Yes, you got a meal ORD-MCI in 80') Drinks flowed. The FA's had fun. Made jokes about the great service, etc. Passed out anything they could think of, playing cards, etc.

It has happened to me. Of course I was flying to a remote airfield in the Andes and the plane held only 10 people and I sat up in the front right behind the pilots. The landing is one I'll never forget. Another time i was flying to PIT from YXU on US and there were only two of us,

Never have been on (my lowest was 11 pax on an FL 717 BOS-ATL), but back in my days as a ramper for EV, we used to send off an ATL-MCN flight at the end of the night with usually no more than 2-3 passengers. Many nights, we'd send it out empty or with one passenger. They couldn't cancel the flight because the a/c (E-120) operating the flight was being sent to MCN for maintenance plus they would send other maintenance-related stuff on that flight as well.

It happened to me once. Flew MSP-DLH-HIB as the only pax aboard. I found it funny we stopped in DLH as no one was getting off and no one ever gets on. It was on a Mesaba Saab 340, about five years ago.

I was the only person on a CO B1900 flight from NAS-PBI!

Also, following the grounding of SR, we were only 4 people in the entire MD-11 on a MIA-ZRH flight! The Flight attendants let us all sit in the F cabin, so that they wouldn't have to be walking around the plane. Out of those four people 1 was in C and the rest including me were in Y! Definately the most enjoyable flight to date!

Both my 'emptiest flights' happened to be to/from RNO. The first one was an E120 that had about 5 or 6 on board, and the next day was an A319, that had about 20 on board (with a full F cabin of course).

I have seen several flight go with 0 pax. Last one was just last Saturday, because of the delays to ORD (ice storm), the last flight left empty, because all the passengers were accommodated on an earlier flight.

I remember once, a pax refused to go when I told him he was the only pax (departure was delayed due to maintenance), he told me he would feel to "weird" being the only one.

Yes!!!! Twice!!!!

The first in a Bellview Airlines flight in 2005 from DKR to FNA in a very old Boeing 737-200; the second in a Binter Canarias flight from LPA to EUN in 2006 in a new ATR-72-500.

There was a QF flight back in the late 80's or early 90's that flew SYD > LHR with 1 passenger , it was a flight that was full on the way back. I imagine cargo and other QF paraphernalia would have made some money on the way to LHR

In the early 1980s (cannot remember which year) I was flying on a Britannia 737 charter flight back from PMI to LGW having booked a "seat only" as we had our own accommodation near Palma. This particular flight was PMI-LTN-LGW and there were only about 20-30 passengers who boarded at PMI for the scheduled 20:30 departure.

At LTN everyone got off and I was the only passenger left who was going on to LGW. My first reaction was that everyone had to alight at LTN but I asked the cabin crew who said I should remain on the aircraft and that we would be continuing on to LGW in about 20 minutes. It was a very strange feeling and I asked the cabin crew if it would not be cheaper to send me down to LGW in a taxi. They replied that they had to go on to LGW as that was the crew's base and in any event the aircraft was due to make another flight from LGW shortly after its arrival.

As soon as all the passengers for LTN had left and their luggage had been unloaded, we continued on to LGW. 3 cabin crew members, two flight deck crew and just me. 2 cabin crew members sat in the front row for the duration of the flight and the third one asked if I wanted anything to drink. After bringing me a coffee, she sat in my row and we talked but a few minutes later we began our descent into LGW. There was no rush to get of the plane at LGW!

It was a great having a whole 737 to yourself, even for a short 20 minute hop, but there was one drawback. I waited for the baggage reclaim belt to be displayed on the monitors. Nothing came up and after about 45 minutes I asked at the Gatwick Handling desk where I could reclaim my luggage. They did not know and had to ask the baggage handlers. It took them about another hour to find my bags.

My experience with emptier flights is either the service is superb, or atrocious. I had one flight last month where there were five people on an ERJ-145 and were told if we wanted anything just to use the call bell. Didn't see the FA for the 1hr 15min flight...

Regional airlines get paid depending on how many flights they make, not the number of passengers, at least that's what I've heard with reference to UA. There is no incentive to cancel a flight, as others have pointed out it'd cause operational headaches.

In Feburary of 2006, A coworker and I were the only passengers on board a Commutair-operated, Continental-coded Beech 1900 FWA-CLE.

The deparutre -- first flight of the day -- was delayed by something like 2 hours [on a 1 hour flight!] due to "crew rest/crew availablility"; we were the only two passengers terminating in Cleveland, everyone else had connections and was rerouted on other carriers.

Not quite the private jet feel, I'll tell you that  Smile

Funny thing is originally (a) we were scheduled to go on a later flight, but we finished earlier than expected and (b) the flight was fully booked [we were standby, IIRC, though we may have gotten the last two seats]

Had a couple of near-empty experiences:

On OS SVO-VIE in early Sept 1998. Just after the Russian economic crisis when they let the ruble into free-fall and the banking system just about collapsed. Altogether 9 Pax on A-321 - 2in J, 7 in Y. Superb service!

On OS VIE-Rostov/Don in July 2005. Not sure why there were only 9 pax on board the CRJ. Again, excellent service.

On SU SVO-HKG in May 2007. This flight was right in the middle of Russia's May holiday week. Only 24 Pax on 763 - the smallest nr on a widebody in my travel experience.

As a kid in 1978: on OS VIE-MAD. Maybe 12 pax, including our family of four. All got to move to J-Class. Full J meal - was superb!

I almost had the expierence.

Going from HEL-JYV ( intra Finland flight) and I was the only one booked. They asked me if I want to fly on next day and stay at the hotel overnight. I agreed got 100 Finnish Mark and had a nice evening at the hotel bar. The canceled the flight. Good solution for both AY and me. Big grin

Last year I travelled from DOH to MUC on a A332 and load was 4J and 34 Y-Class pax. Not a good loadfactor either.  Smile

I have never been the only on but was on a UA 319 from ORD YVR with my fiance and had only 7 others on board , we had the first 6 rows of economy plus, so it felt like we had the aircraft to ourselves. The flight was late leaving due to a maintanance issue so thought we might be cancelled but all was good. I do recall reading in Airliners or AIrways once of someone on a transatlantic 747 being the only passenger. Now that would feel strange!

BA operated a 747 from NRT to LHR with just one passenger some years ago. There had been a very long delay due to a technical problem and all the passengers except one were rebooked on other carriers.

My wife and I were flying SAN-LAS on HP.
The plane broke and they sent all passengers to other airlines.
HP ferried the plane to LAS and since we were NRSA, we were able to jump on it.

Yes, several times. The first experince was on a CJ1 from SRQ to LAL. That was quite nice if not short. For the return bacl to Sarasota it was my turn in the cockpit. I also have been the only pax on a SF340 to PVD from LGA. Than a few weeks ago I was the only person in first and as usual not revenue from TPA to CLT headded back to NY from visiting my pals.

The service was better than an international flight....LOL....there was only 20 in the back so the two F.A';s
spent a lot of time with us....we got more attention the we usually do at Hooters.

Yes, on a small plane, air taxi, from Merrill Field to Port Alsworth on Lake Clark Air aboard a scheduled airline serving Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, just the pilot and me crossing a pass through large mountains. Many fisherman came back to Anchorage, I was the only one going out. The return was packed with a senior pilot because of cloud cover and the need for experience flying the pass at below the altitude for automatic instrumentation.

Closest I came was being the only pax in J on a SQ 744 BKK-SIN some years back. The outbound flight from SIN had been delayed several hours due to some hydraulic problem. I believed some passengers transferred to TG, so eventually there was only about 40 pax in total, all in Y except for me Big grin .

I've also flown on a Qantaslink Dash 8-Q200 LRE-BNE with 12 other passengers and 2 flight attendants one was in training.

I was on a DFW-SNN flight with one other person. 3 pilots, and the two of us with 355 seats on the aircraft. Ever played catch in the main cabin of an MD-11?

That was probably my best one, I can't count the cargo flights...

Quoting LX64A332 (Reply 16):
The Flight attendants let us all sit in the F cabin, so that they wouldn't have to be walking around the plane. Out of those four people 1 was in C and the rest including me were in Y!

Must suck to think that you payed for C, and then you as well as the Y-class payers eventually get the same product.

On an MH flight back in the early nineties (I was only 1) my parents say that we and two other people were the only one in that cabin, but there were more in the front Y-cabin, J-cabin and F-cabin.

Kind of ... many years ago (5/79) I was in F-cl. on a Sabena DC-10 travelling between BRU & NRT. I had a bad case of the flu, and spent most of the trip - which back in those days stopped in ATH-DXB-BKK & MNL - sleeping. When I fell asleep once more after the t/o from BKK, I slept thru' the flight to and stopover in MNL (the v. nice crew never woke me up for landing or t/o in MNL).

Out of BKK, I remembered the F-cabin being quite full. Next time I woke up, somewhere between MNL & NRT, I was completely alone! A very weird, disorienting and a slightly scary experience, until a FA filled me in on the full story, and brought me something to eat.

Cheers!

Me and four classmates made up 25% of the PAX load on a KE flight between ICN and NGO back in '05. And it was aboard a 777-300. I asked the F/A about the load, and she said that the early morning return flight was full, so KE operated it despite only carrying 20 PAX.

Cheers

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Was alone on Northwest Airlink Dornier from Boston to ISP Long Island...and another flight from O'hare to ISP on an American New MD-80 with five SOULS onboard...they gave us a high performance climb out of chicago right off the runway...for a transport plane, that thing hauled -ss!
