Longest Flights On RJs

Tue Dec 18, 2007 6:21 pm

Now that RJs are flying some quite long routes, what are the longest nonstop routes out there that people know of flown by RJs?

I am specifically interested in the CRJ-200 (as that is what I fly), but also very interested in other types as well.... I know my airline does some flights approaching 1000nm with the CR2, but there must be longer ones out there.

I took a Pinnical Airlines CRJ-200 ALB-MSP last month which was just at 1000 miles. Longest 3 hour flight of my life...

Historically, SkyWest Airlines has operated CRJ-200's for United Express between DEN and BNA. That's over 1000 miles.

I believe CO was doing IAH-BOI in the E145XR
.... but don't know if it still exists.... that was quite aways.

Also, I think Eagle does XNA-LAX which has to be over 1000nm.

It seems like Pinnacle does some really long -200 flights. Apparently they have previously flown DTW-AUS and MSP-TUS (!!!)

Also, Skywest flies YYZ-SLC with the CRJ-900, apparently sometimes that flight is over 5 hours!

DL(oh) used to fly the -200 CVG-COS, im sure there are some long ones out of denver on the skywest side using the -200, iirc the longest uax flight using the -700 is LAX-DSM, maybe there is a longer one out there that i dont know about.

The longest I've done is PHX-MSP on the CRJ-900 (then America West Express). It only ran for a few weeks before going back to mainline. It's 1276 miles.

I know US flies PHX-DSM on the CRJ-200, for 1149 miles. In that case however, it's basically a CRJ-200 flight or no flight at all!

The longest -700 flight I've done is SLC-YYZ and back when there was a lack of -900's.

I've done CVG-YUL on a Comair -200... seemed a bit longer than my kneecaps could handle. And, this Saturday I'm doing CVG-MIA on Comair. Not looking forward to that too much...

I remember UAX/Mesa running RDU-DEN with a -700 and all of the problems associated with that...weight restrictions leaving off pax and or bags. Did ZW back when they were part of the United Express system run a -200 ATL-DEN?
I can remember reading about it in Mike Boyd's weekly column a couple of years back, but then again he is not exactly a fan of UA especially how this week's blog he talks about how UA is quietly putting down Ted.

Keep in mind that there is a WORLD of difference in comfort between the -200 and the -700/-900 models! The -200 is the most cramped and uncomfortable plane I have ever been on, but the -700 and -900 models are at mainline comfort levels. In fact, to me (I'm 6' tall), it's more comfortable as you have only aisle or window - 2x2 or 1x2 is GREAT!!

Having said that (and getting  flamed  in the process, I'm sure!), at one point the longest RJ flights were BFL-IAH at 1241 nm (cancelled, of course!!) and BOI-IAH at 1288 nm (also cancelled).

My longest RJ flight was America West Express in 2004 MSP-PHX at 1109 nm.

Some of the routes mentioned:

MEM-BOS: 990 nm
MSP-YUL: 970 nm
MSP-IAH: 898 nm
MSP-SLC: 861 nm (done this route on a -700 and a -900)
MSP-GEG: 1021 nm
MSP-ELP: 997 nm
MSP-ALB: 851 nm
DEN-BNA: 881 nm
LAX-XNA: 1191 nm
LGA-XNA: 997 nm
DTW-AUS: 998 nm
MSP-TUS: 1128 nm
MSP-DSM: 999 nm
CVG-YUL: 620 nm
CVG-MIA: 824 nm
LAX-DSM: 1257 nm

But the winner for routes mentioned so far is....drum roll please...

SLC-YYZ: 1443 nm

SAT-SMF 1463 mi (4:03 in schedule!)
OKC-SMF 1342 mi
MCI-ONT 1318 mi
OMA-SAN 1313 mi
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

ATL-YUL, and ATL-MTY have to be long services for CR2s. In addition, DFW-BOI has to be a stretch on a CR7. As far as ER4s go, I'd think that IAH-YYZ would be quite a haul...

When ZW was doing AirTran JetConnect I remember the ATL-ICT route was exclusively AirWhisky CRJ's for a time. Not the longest CRJ-200 route but I am sure the folks in ICT were not exactly thrilled to see the nice mainline 717's be replaced with CRJ's especially with the subsidies ICT gave to FL to start and sustain service there.

Apparently Belavia Airlines are to re introduce their Minsk - Shannon service with a CRJ. It was previously operated by a mixture of B737-500 and Tu154. This has a great circle distance of 1516 miles !

Comair used to fly a CRJ from CVG-LAS with a fuel stop in, I believe TUL, of just 30 minutes. I think that takes the cake for longest direct flight. This was around 2000, IIRC.

Are these flights weight restricted or can they actually fly these routes with 75-76 pax and their baggage?

I think I have seen a pic of an Iberia Regional Air Nostrum CRJ900 flying Valencia-Tenerife with 90 pax. That flight is around 1050nm with block time 3 hours. That's a pretty good achievement for a CRJ900.

If the jetstream isn't playing fair that day, then it can be weight restricted, or require a fuel stop.

The E-170 and E-175 carry the same maximum fuel, which is only 1,000 lbs more than the CRJ-900--a marginal difference. However, with the additional weight of the 175, more fuel is required to complete a given segment, thereby reducing its useful range. Since the amount of passengers both can carry are the same (and the same as DL's config) what really matters then, is that given the E-175's higher weight, and higher fuel burn to maintain a given airspeed (since the engines are the same on both types, and the E-175 is more bulbous than the CRJ-900) the E-175 is less efficient than the CRJ-900 on the MSP-YVR route. To at least give some credit to the E-175, though--on a day with a bad jet stream, both aircraft will be restricted due to their maximum fuel capacity, and will either require a fuel stop, or severe weight restrictions.

However when you look at the comfort factor. The Ejet family is superior. Wider seats than most mainline jets. We operate the E175s in an 86 seat configuration and do runs like MSP-PHL..DFW-PHL...MCI-DCA.

Yes, to comfort. No to economics. Since you only pass out drinks to the passengers, and don't count the beans, I'll let your views slide as this thread was about RJs and not Ejets.

Ok considering I also worked on the CL600-2B19 as well as the E145 family of products. Honestly it does not matter. The Embraer family is more comfortable from the turboprop to the E195. Buy the way Only Pass Out Drinks. Our primary job is safety all other offerings are ancillary.

So the E-120 and E-110 are more comfortable than the Dash-8 or ATR? That's news to me. And yes, if you compare the E-170 to the CRJ-200, you have a point, but you can't say the same of the -700 or -900.

As far as your job is concerned, I know your responsibilities, and your time requirements. It's just hard to put double sarcasm (see the bean counter part, too) in a sentence and not make it obvious.
