Boy! The A330 Is Fugly Without Winglets!

Mon Dec 24, 2007 12:45 pm

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/photos/photos/7/7/0/1309077.jpg

This is the VERY FIRST time I've ever seen the A330 missing a winglet, but man, that missing winglet sure does take a lot away from the beauty and elegance of the aircraft. While I prefer the 777, and it's musclely (made up word) like Team America World Police, F#ck YEAH! The Europeans have come up with Elegant styles on their aircraft. However, the A300 and A310 have to be some of the ugliest planes out there....anyway, does anyone else find this one a tad ugly without the winglet?

I think it looks fine. Are most of the members of this board supposed to know what "Team America World Police" refers to?

"Chubby = Ugly"

Haven't we been fighting this myth for ages? I think the A310 is quite beautiful.

You are right, the A330 is really ugly without the winglets, and it seems smaller also.

Not relevant to this thread ( or aviation) but it's a movie made by the same folks that make South Park. Very funny. Big grin

I think it looks fine - but then again, I don't usually apply the concept of good/bad looking to airplanes. They either do what they're supposed to, or they don't, and they all look more or less the same anyhow.

On some, the proportions are right, on some they aren't, i.e. the B777 and that strange vertical stabilizer Boeing put on there - they sure weren't looking to make the plane look good by putting that thing on there: but the plane does what it's supposed to, and does it extremely well - so the fact that this European thinks it's not really an eye-pleaser is completely irrelevant... and that's my personal opinion of my very own personal opinion...  Wink

Look like an A306, just a bit longer, therefore more elegant. I can't see what's wrong with it.

For me the 772 is one of the ugliest widebody aircraft there is. I don't know why, but have you evern see a tuna fish? That's what it reminds me of. However, it's a fantastic machine.

I'm glad I am not the only one thinking this. I recently saw a picture of an Air Canada A330 without a winglet and was shocked at how Fugly it looked. It's amazing how much the wingtips add to the beauty of the aircraft!

My main issue with the aesthetics of the A330 (especially the -300) is that you have this long fuselage and wide wingspan with these two tiny little engines hanging off it. The winglets neither add nor detract from that inherent lack of...balance.

Adding the extra two engines of the A340 really makes a difference in "balancing out" the plane's looks in my eyes.

I think the 777-200 series is the best-looking plane in the skies right now, followed by the -300. Big fuselage. Big wings. Big engines. All in aesthetic balance.

Its not "fugly" per se, but it doesn't have that same elegant look.

The A330 looks better with winglets but I dont think its ugly without them.

I'd have to disagree, I like the -300ER but not the -200. The best looking to me is the A346 however it would be interesting to see it without winglets.

It does look odd. As a contrary comment, I find the looks of the B757 to be greatly blighted and smeared by the presence of winglets. The tall stalky landing gear, long thin fuselage and vertical tail give the 757 a somewhat "upright stance". The addition of winglets only adds to this to great detriment.

On the other hand, I think winglets on 737's greatly enhance the appearance of that aircraft. They add a much need element of sleekness to the "hunkered down" look of the 737.

Remember, Sri Lanka Airlines A343's winglet hit the BA 744's winglet. Pax thought that they would fly another aircraft but when they got there, they still saw same aircraft. They were told that it was safe to fly without winglets but they refused to fly it without winglets. Hahaha!

It wasn't the first time. There are 37 A.net photos of aircraft with one winglet missing. A few examples:

Too right! Blended winglets are a great addition to the beauty of the 737, in a proportion that is far beyond their physical size  Smile!

To me, the A346 suffers some of the "unbalanced" look of the A330. The four engines help, but that super-long fuselage...

I think the A340-300 is the best-looking Airbus plane, followed by the A340-500. After that, I admit I am not a fan of any other Airbus design from an aesthetic point of view. If the A350 keeps the original nose, then she'll be a winner, but if they end up putting the A380 nose on her, then not so much.  Smile

I hope they keep the original (have to be careful with that word when the A350 is concerned  Wink ) but I'm starting to warm the A380 nose.

There are some images in this thread from Hloutweg, although they are not official the SU XWB looks quite good IMO!

Personally I don't like the looks of the A330 with or without winglets, but A) that's just my opinion and B) Looks of a plane mean squat. Aerodynamics are what count.

There is no plane that wouldn't look good in NW's livery...ant those PW engines help too. The 330 with RR's looks a bit weird... As Stitch wrote, they really seem to be un-proportionally small.

Hi!

What I think is that both Boeing and Airbus need to change the "glue" that they use to connect those winglets!!! I wish one day I could find one of those winglets in my area...do you think the airlines would give me a compensation if I returned to them? They should!!! Maybe a round trip to New York First Class!!!

I think the 777-300ER is one of the best looking planes still in production. The 777-200ER is too short in my opinion. It is really not an aesthetic balance. It is like the 747SP -which is an interesting looking plane but when you look at it you know something is not right and the aircraft should be longer. Same with the A380-800 and A310.
