Should Virgin Re-Brand Its Airlines?

Sun Dec 30, 2007 1:08 am

I find Virgin's airline branding somewhat strange. With names like Polynesian Blue, Virgin Blue, V Australia, and Pacific Blue you know it's a Virgin Airline but nothing more.

Yet there is Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Nigeria, and now Virgin America. I think Virgin should rebrand its non geographically named airlines (and give them all a consistent livery at the same time!)

- V Australia would be Virgin Pacific and be the sister "flagship" airline, akin to Virgin Atlantic.

- Virgin Blue/Pacific Blue could rebrand as Virgin Australia/Virgin New Zealand or Virgin Oz/Virgin Kiwi

- Polynesian Blue could rebrand as Virgin Polynesia

- Or all the "Blue" airlines could re-brand as Virgin Oceania

From a customer point of view, do these airlines have any connection anyway? I mean, you can't book a Virgin Atlantic ticket that connects onto a Virgin America flight, right?

(Correct me if I'm wrong)

That's correct, at least for now.

The ones without Virgin in the name aren't Virgin. Poly Blue and V Australia are run by the company that owns Virgin Blue, which isn't SRB.

The naming competition for V Australia included the names Virgin Australia and Virgin Pacific so they were choices and Pacific Blue is operated by Virgin Blue so its a Virgin branded company.

All those ideas wouldnt work as part of the SQ owning VS agreement that no international (excluding VS) is allowed to fly international under the Virgin brand name. V Australia was named like that so people saw it as Virgin Australia. As for Polynesian Blue as part of the deal with the Samoan (I think) government they had to keep the Polynesian name and Virgin Polynesian wouldnt work as it had to fit in with P-Blue and V-Blue
