Opinion On Planes Being Built In China

Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:05 pm

Now that we have already seen one plane being launched and a B787 like aircraft as well, what is your opinion on the planes being built in China.
Will the public have a role in which airlines buy the aircraft considering the problems being seen by the Chinese when it comes to producing something by the media?
How successful do you think this initiative is?

I am sorry if my above comments caused hurt to the Chinese, I tried to say it in a manner in which there are no bad feelings, though this is all I could manage

I'm disappointed with Chinese copying just about everything, hope they start making original designs.

It is just a matter of time for them to come out with original jet designs. Hey, that is where Chinese food originated, right?

Well look at the other thread where they are talking about developing a wide body plane, the model happens to look a lot like the 787. They copy everything. Personally i would rather pull everything out of China and move it to somewhere like mexico where the hard working people need the money and are not communist. Of course people are going to move production to places like china where labor is cheap, but there are other cheap labor countries other than china who are a little scary if you ask me

The Chinese government will have these airplanes designed and then force Chinese airlines to buy them over western designs. It would be a very long time before a Chinese made airliner would be accepted by an airline outside Asia.

This is what I was thinking as well.

Absolutely. Airlines need to sell tickets. If passengers are leary about flying a particular aircraft that will certainly drive business decisions. That's exactly what happened with SAS's Q-400's, and to a lesser extent with the DC-10 in its early life.

Given that they've got a captive market of Chinese airlines, I think they'll do just fine. I don't see any reason they can't reach the quality of their Western counterparts (AVIC I & II already make lots of parts for Boeing and Airbus). Support is probably their biggest hurdle...they need to build a global support infrastructure if they want to sell to non-Asian airlines.

The public will not be a decision-maker. The airlines will.

I am not jingoistic nor am I intending to degrade the Chinese with these statements, but at this time, the Chinese industrial base is not capable of building a commercial airframe with sufficiently low CASM to be able to compete with Boeing or Airbus, even if they have the advantage on raw price.

if they can put someone in space and bring them back in one piece and the PRC government are willing to put the resources into the commercial aerospace industry, it should be no more or less dangerous than any other major industrial product from any Asian nation. how many of you folks out there are driving Japanese cars or even Korean cars these days ???

Maybe, maybe not. Remember China is using aircraft purchases as a political chip in trade relations. If they start buying internally primarily, they lose that chip and possibly the very markets that pay for the exports that fund China's growth.

My Honda was made in the UK. Thank you.

Jeeps are made in Beijing, found all over China.
And now I read that an Indian company will by Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford!

Just don't lick the interior walls in flight and you won't get lead poisoning. Wouldn't recommend bringin' your kids on board.

I'd feel safe - after Mattel-gate - we are all aware that China will execute (and sell the organs of) people who mess up, so I'd feel safe flying a Chinese built plane. However, ethically, I couldn't help but wonder how many people died so that I could be on that plane.

And the paper, and powder, and many other things... so any original design won't come as a surprise. Japan and Korea have done it.

I can't say safety is ancillary, because it is not, but airline economics are based on efficiency, reliability, and performance. I do not believe the Chinese could produce a plane equal, to say nothing of superior, to the Boeing or Airbus equivalent now or likely within the next two decades (especially as the latter two move to CFRP) even if they could undercut them on list price.

Quoting Trex8 (Reply 10):

Straw-man argument.

The first Japanese automobile, the Toyota Crown, was imported to the US in 1956 and they had been building passenger cars for a decade before that. So they have had 50 years to refine and improve their product. Even the Koreans have had two decades in the US marketplace plus their previous home-market experience.

And yet the first Japanese and Korean cars imported into America were not very good. It took Hyundai a decade to shake off most of their poor quality image in the US and even now, a decade after that, many people who only know the company by it's name believe the quality of their automobiles to be rubbish.

I'm sorry but a Chinese made alarm clock that might not go off at 7am and I miss work is a little different then say a wing falling off the plane I'm on while going on vacation. One results in my boss being annoyed, the other is me dead.

Also, IMO Japanese quality is light years ahead of Chinese made products. Just look at their price difference. You get what you pay for I guess.

It should also be noted that many of those products that are "Made in China" were in-fact "Designed in Japan" and assembled following Japanese assembly practices in factories similar to those in Japan.

No, but it does illustrate the incredible ignorance that many have about China. It reminds me of the arrogance that many Bombardier employees use to talk about Brazil when EMB struggled through the ERJ design and development in the 80's... and now look who is laughing with their E-jets.

Yes, however if I was to be told my next flight will be on a plane built by the Chinese, I would start to consider the alternatives considering all the bad media they get due to smaller objects. Now if I choose not to fly an airline due to its plane, than they are loosing a passenger, and possibly even more if I spread the news that they are flying planes built by the Chinese. So if they loose me, indirectly we are responsible to which planes they buy

If the Chinese built a plane that was as good as or better in CASM (and safety) then an Airbus or Boeing plane - which is what they would need to do to win the airline's orders - then at that point I could only assume they had "sweated the details", so to speak, and I would have no reservations (excuse the pun) about boarding it.
