Best Daytrip Destinations From London

Sat Jan 05, 2008 5:29 pm

Hi,
I was wondering where are good destinations for spotting daytrips from London. I don't drive so places that are easily accessible by foot or public transport and within resonable flight time of London. I've been to DUS, ZRH, BRE, GVA before are there any other good spotter friendly places??

Thanks

Doesnt this belong to Poll and Prefs???

Opps, sorry!!! It is already there.

If you want to get to some new airport, choose AMS or why not FRA???

Have you tried to fly LCY - MAN - LCY on VG ?

MUC ?
You get a observation deck (glass wall) above Terminal 2 ( = Star Alliance).
A spotter hill facing the apron of Terminal 1. A few old a/c are on display. Airside tours are offered.
http://www.munich-airport.de/EN/Area...r/Erlebnis/Besucherpark/index.html
For the spotting locations along the runways you will need a car or a bike.

HAJ ?
Visitor Terrace between Terminals A and B.
Some interesting traffic from Russia and CIS especially on Saturdays (sometimes delayed, espcially Air Astana with its B767).
Car Park Nord (North) can be reached on foot in 10 minutes and offers views of the taxiway to runway 27R; runway 27R itself is a bit further away.
If going for two days, take the train to another german city (airport) on the second day. Then depart from there back to LON. BRE and HAM would be reachable on discounted railway fares ("Niedersachsen ticket").
Also ICE-trains to Berlin (TXL) and FRA are frequent and fast (2-2.5 hr). AFAIK, spotting at TXL from around the terminal however is rather limited.

Yes, but only in Terminal 2, so views of the apron are limited.
Have you any intention to join us at the FRA Meeting on 23- and 24-FEB-2008 ? Winter 08 FRA Meet (by DYflyer Oct 21 2007 in Non Aviation)

PMI there are so many flight options and you could do a 24 hour day there, Loads of european charter airlines and all the scheduled ones as well.It would be a cheap option for flight costs as well. Or you could save the footprint and go by eurostar to CDG!! ( if you like concrete!)

STR has a decent visitors terrace vith okay views (but facing into the sun), but while traffic is frequent, it is limited to B737/A320 and smaller a/c. DL's B763 is the biggest regular visitor apart from a USAF C17 ever so often. There is a train station (S-Bahn) in the terminal, so going downtown is no problem.

Problem would be that spotting at CDG (actually any AdP-airport) is discouraged or forbidden (I do not know the exact words).

PMI .. Loads of european charter airlines and all the scheduled ones as well.

Variety of carriers depend on season and day of the week.
During off-season, be prepared to see mainly AB, AB, AB and IB, UX, JK ...
However, the better spotting locations are either to the west of the airfield or at the north-east corner. For each of these locations a car is required, but the O.P. stated that he does not drive, so this might be a no-no ...

Manchester is pretty good. You got the option of the (high-up and distant) roof terrace, or catching a bus to the viewing park. I've flown up for the day on a couple of occasions, and always enjoyed it, although the variety is a little limited, but you get a good mix of long/short-haul/holiday traffic, as well as those 747 freighters we all love! The earlier you get the there the better though, most long-haul traffic is gone by lunch time.
Next Up: Back to the US - Charlotte & Kansas City

HAM also has a good observation deck with unobstructed views of the ramp and runways.
