8 Days In Japan, Advice Please..

Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:37 am

Hi!

(Wow, I kind of started this one in Japanese, no?  Wink )

Some of oyu may have read my previous thread anbout me winning free tickets on KLM, yadda yadda, anyway, I've decided to visit Japan in September..

To make long story short, I need advice on hotels, places to visit and so on. Could you help me to fil in the voids please? Japan is such a mysterious county to me, I need to read a lot about it first, I know, but I'm willing to!

So far, my idea is: to fly on a Friday to KIX, arrive on Saturday.

--Saturday day 2: Osaka-Kyoto, best transport please? Advice on hotels?

--Sunday day 3: Kyoto, what should one visit?

--Monday day 4: Kyoto, what best way to get to Nara?

--Tuesday day 5: Nara, hotel advice please? Sights to visit? Should I leave for Hiroshima in the evening? How?

--Wednesday day 6: Hiroshima. Hotel?

--Thursday day 7: flight HIJ-HND, which is kind of symbolic I thought, September 11th, from Hiroshima where the tragedy happened during WW II, travelling on a day that another big tragedy happend in 2001.. Afternoon in Tokyo

--Friday day 8: Tokyo, hotel? Sights?

--Saturday day 9: Tokyo

--Sunday day10: flight NRT-AMS-BRU KL 777 & Fokker 100

Is there any way you think I could squeeze Mount Fuji in? Even if it's on a tour bus, get out, click click?

Do you think it's a good plan to be in Tokyo for 3 days or should I shorten it to make time for something else?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!

Best regards,
LO231

: Kyoto, what should one visit?

Visit the Palace , it's beautiful !

Be careful with the times , very strange open times when I was there ! I had to wait 1:30 in front of it , until they opened .

Visit the train station , great architecture ! And eat a good burger in MOS burger , love that burgers !

Enjoy your visit to this great country !

Constantin

Edit : Don't forget the Japanese girls  Wink , very beautiful !

btw : seat in First Class in the shinkansen, Japanese People won't get angry with foreigners , included the controller , trust me

--Saturday day 2: Osaka-Kyoto, best transport please? Advice on hotels?

There is a direct train from the airport running to Kyoto Station

--Sunday day 3: Kyoto, what should one visit?
I would concentrate on the Golden Palace, Nijo Castle, Gion Area. You need to register for the Imperial Palace, you might do that the day before!

--Monday day 4: Kyoto, what best way to get to Nara?
There is a local train running 1-2 times per hour. It takes around 45-60 min.

--Tuesday day 5: Nara, hotel advice please? Sights to visit? Should I leave for Hiroshima in the evening? How?
I have never stayed in Nara overnight but only did daytrips from Kyoto and returned at the same night. You would have to return from Nara to Kyoto anyway and change to the Shinkansen from there.

--Wednesday day 6: Hiroshima. Hotel?
I can't remember in which hotel we stayed. I think it was a Ryokan not too far away from the main station.

--Thursday day 7: flight HIJ-HND, which is kind of symbolic I thought, September 11th, from Hiroshima where the tragedy happened during WW II, travelling on a day that another big tragedy happend in 2001.. Afternoon in Tokyo
What are you flying on HIJ-HND?

--Friday day 8: Tokyo, hotel? Sights?
I stayed in several Hotels/Ryokans in Tokyo. I would rather choose the area where you intend to stay first and then focus on the hotel it self. I stayed several times in Ueno since it is very fast connected to NRT with the Keisei Line (the cheapest way to get downtown from NRT, an unbeatable 1000 JPY!)

--Saturday day 9: Tokyo
enjoy!

--Sunday day10: flight NRT-AMS-BRU KL 777 & Fokker 100

Is there any way you think I could squeeze Mount Fuji in? Even if it's on a tour bus, get out, click click?
There are but I would rather spend your time in Tokyo. If the weather is fine you will see Fuji anyway. Just go up to the City Hall Building in Shinjuku which is free of charge by the way. Other options are the TV Tower.

Do you think it's a good plan to be in Tokyo for 3 days or should I shorten it to make time for something else?
I stayed there one week recently and it wasn't enough. But I have also been to other parts in Japan. It depends on what you intend to do and in what you are interessted. If you aren't really into Shopping but more into something else you can also do daytrips from Tokyo to eg. Kamakura, Yokohama, Nikko etc.

Yokohama doesn't have that much culture as Kamakura, Nikko or other places but its still a nice place with lots of things to be done.

This site is very useful for schedules (train, air, etc.)

Nikko is nice, but it's a schlep. From Tokyo it's a nice day trip by car, but by train it might take too long.

3 days is in no way too much time in Tokyo.

I'd also recommend City Hall (Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, or something like that). Don't count of seeing Fuji from Tokyo. It's might happen, but it's not an everyday event.

Are there any one day trips from Tokyo that include Mt Fuji?

I've also found out that I can buy aweek rail pass that includes bullet trains and a Tokyo subway for around 200 EUR. Is that an OK price?

When in Tokyo, one can always go to Disneyland...

If you're into food, Tokyo establishments have more Michelin stars than the ones in Paris and New York combined. Pretty amazing. And there is no shortage of nightlife.

Regarding Kyoto, take a look at this site. You will find information about all the attractions and transportation. There´s a nice map with all the temples and the train stations nearby. I can personally recommend the Kinkaku-ji temple (golden temple). It´s really stunning.

This is the site for the city of Kamakura. Here you will find the Amita Buddha (Great Buddha). Very beautiful place.
