Advice Needed On Travel To China

Thu Jan 10, 2008 3:31 pm

Hi all,

I am to go to China in April/May with work and will most probably have the following routing:

FRA > Shanghai > Chengdu > Shanghai > FRA

As my company will be booking and paying in economy (if I am very lucky perhaps business on the inner-China legs), I will most probably have little choice but who should my preferred carrier be for the Germany > China routes: Air China or China Eastern? And within China, should I be going for Air China or Shanghair Airlines?

Any recommendations or tips would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Ive flown LAX-PVG a couple of times on MU. Needless to say, they arent very good. CA is a little better, I would go with them. They are about the same as LH.
It is what it is...

Try to avoid both, in my opinion, if you have the option. Neither will be horrible but LH will be better.

LH 728 is the flight number.

Try MUC-PVG-CTU-PVG-MUC on LH A346 as their B744 are getting past it. You could also try routing via PEK as the new terminal should be open for *A airlines.

I flew around China last month on MU and CA - both were OK ish.

Within China, I've tried a couple of airlines: Air China, Xiamen Airlines, China Southern, and China Eastern.

Avoid China Eastern, they are not so flash. I had only one flight on Xiamen Airlines, so not much to say about them. China Southern has very tight pitch (even on their 772 from PEX-CAN). Air CHina has a Ministry of Flight feel to it, but probably the pick.

There's a good chance there won't be many foreigners on internal flights. Bring something to read with you since IFE will be in Chinese (if they have IFE, that is).

As for J vs Y? Doesn't really matter IMHO, although the J seats are US-style proper wide seats rather than LH's convertible seat.

I've heard a lot of good things about Chengdu, so do have a good time and enjoy the fiery local cuisine. I love it! Stay away from the Mao Tai liquor - over 50% alcohol!

Definitely fly Shanghai airlines within China. It has an all relatively new Boeing fleet of 757, 738 and 767. so enjoy!

With over 100 flights on China Southern that is who I would recommend, but that is just my humble opinion.

Well if your only choice to and from Shanghai are China Eastern and Air China I'd go with China Eastern which is against nearly everyone else who has answered your question, I thought they were perfectly satisfactory and I had the good fortune of one of their A346's which you don't have with air China. On the domestic leg I'd go for Shanghai only because I've never had the pleasure.
3 years ago I went to China for work too and on one domestic leg I had a booked China Eastern flight that was a code share with another carrier that was not listed anywhere on my paperwork, even my itinerary said Flight operated by "unknown" with the aircraft being an A319. As I waited at the lounge I saw what I thought was an Aeroflot A319 taxi to the gate but where I was I could not see it. Turned out to be UE Air of all things and while the flight was very ordinary I was thankful that my good fortune had given me such an unusual entry in my log book.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!
