What To Do In SIN For 5 Hours?

Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:34 am

Hi,

My wife and I will be spending 5 hours on the ground in SIN in not too long...is this long enough to do something like take a cab around the town and get back in time to board our connecting flight? Do you need a visa in this situation? What else is there to do, especially if you have to stay in the airport?

Thanks!

If you are an American citizen (as indicated by your flag), no visa is required. A train to go downtown takes about 30mins so it might be worth a trip. What are you looking to do or see? Otherwise, there is a movie screening faciltity (free of charge) in T2, shopping is not too bad as well. However, if you have a taste for local food, the airport sucks big time.

Email me your flight details so I can advise you better.

Hi,

You don't need VISA for entering Singapore if you have a US passport.
You just fill in the immigration form and enter.

There are city tours by bus from the airport you can take.
Looks like they are for free as well.
More information here.

You can afford to do some shopping in the city, should have time to spare for check-in. Alternatively, you can try local food, as mentioned above. There are a few food centre not too far from the airport.

Is there anything left of Bugis Street?

What do you wish to be "left" of Bugis Street? It is an area crowded with shops, shops and more shops! Not to mention a few shopping malls as well. Unless you are referring to the old Bugis Street where the transvestites hung out, no they are all gone and present day it isn't so "resque" anymore, maybe except for a novelty condom/sex shop tucked at a corner.

I can certainly recommend the Changi Airport city tour, also there is a hotel within the airport where you can check in for a day room, have a shower, use the gym etc, which is great for unwinding after a long flight, especially if you have to go onto another flight.

The free city bus tour is excellent so is the downtown shopping (just take the metro/train).

I have to admit I am rather biased in as much as I love Singapore. IMHO I would be disappointed only to be spending 5 hours there.

That big outdoor square was a nice place to sit, have a drink, and watch the world go by. The various vendors weren't annoyingly aggressive. If you stayed with the crowd it wasn't a dangerous place, despite its reputation.

Now it's all shops, you say? Pity.

SQ also has a hop on hop off bus, all you need is a boarding pass to say you traveled with SQ, not sure if it goes out to the airport, but stops at all the major places.

EAT! Singapore has to be one of the great, undiscovered tourist sites on the planet. Do some quick research on the food courts, they are amazing. Cab over to Clark Quay for Singapore Chili Crab. Believe me, it is worth 2 bouts of jet lag to enjoy (you will all need showers afterwards, but Changi is a great airport). Or head over to either Little India or Arab Street and window shop. The city is magnificent, the people are wonderful, the food is beyond amazing, the exchange rate is great, and you just might want to miss your connection. Five hours isn't a lot of time, but it is enough, especially if you go by cab, and they are very reasonably (read: cheap) priced. Do you have room for me?

It is not a dangerous place to be in anyway... What kind of "danger" did you experience?

If you are feeling tired after your inbound I highly recommend the snoozing area - Rainforest lounge, I think is the name - where you can have a nap on a proper little bed without fear of missing your flight.

I never felt any threat, but I was with my wife. She didn't mind when we were sitting in the main square, but she didn't like the side streets. Otherwise, she liked the whole island as well as Jahore Baru.

If Tiger Balm Gardens is still there, KELPkid might like that. It gave me a completely new view of Buddhism.
