What To Do In FRA For 8 Hours

Thu Jan 10, 2008 12:29 pm

All

On an upcoming transfer I will have 8 hours to kill in FRA.

I have heard great things about FRA as an airport in terms of facilities but I was just wondering if there would be a chance to venture out or even if there are any kinds of transit hotels like in Asia for example where I could book a room for a few hours?

Cheers

I don't think you'll find a transit hotel. Especially not right on the airport.
I am assumning that you are a citizen of the EU. If so, you are allowed to leave the airport as you desire. Perhaps you might want to take the S8 or S9 trains downtown (costs you around 8 EUR roundtrip) and look around there. Frankfurt is a nice enough city to walk through for a few hours. Getting to town takes around 20 minutes and tarins run every 15 minutes during the daytime. Word of advise: Take the S8 or S9 from the "Regional Train Station" and buy your ticket at one of the machines before you board. Otherwise they will charge you a EUR 40 penalty!

You COULD also take the long distance trains, but they are ridiculously expensive (almost EUR 10 oneway). For those you can buy tickets at machines or on board as you desire.

Also, as an a.nut, you could venture up to the observation deck on Terminal 2 and spend some time there as well.

There's a Sheraton hotel directly connected to the airport.... may be a little pricey for a few hours nap though.

However... There's tons of stuff to do in the airport... from the usual shopping to movies to hanging out with a beer watching the planes go by  biggrin

Underneath the airport is a U-Bahn (subway) station which is 11 minutes from the city center. Very easy to get to the heart of Frankfurt and wander around....

There used to be a full size movie cinema in Terminal 1 (Halle C). It showed a variety of just released movies in English and German. I just checked the web and can't find reference to it.

Does anyone know if it is still there?

Go to McDonalds and spot landing or departing aircrafts for hours.  Smile I killed 5 1/2 hours this year like this.

There's always the casino, right around the corner from Mcdonalds. I've done more than a few stints in FRA. The trip into town is ok, quick and cheap...better than sitting around the airport doing nothing.

I have an overnight in FRA tomorrow and I'm looking for a hotel...wow...not cheap.
What the...?

A few months ago I had a seven-hour layover in Frankfurt and did just as 764 suggested... took the S-Bahn into the city. The ride is about 20 minutes and you're dropped off at the Hauptbahnhof (main train station.) Frankfurt is not the most architecturally memorable German city - although they do have a cluster of old buildings in the Dom/Roemer area - but it's a nice, compact, easily walkable city center. The Zeil is the main shopping street and (in November anyhow) full of kiosks selling fries, sausages and hot drinks. Frankfurt is also pretty much the only city in Europe with an American-style skyline full of high-rise buildings, so it's interesting to see those as well.

No, long time gone. I am not sure if the sex cinema is still there. They are refurbishing the lower level where the S-Bahn station is and the Chinese Restaurant just closed Dec 31 for that reason. Spending 5 1/2 hours at FRA is no problem. just wander around the departure and arrival levels in T1 and then take the train to T2 and go to McD's or the observation deck. You will find that time passes quickly..

Or take the S-Bahn to the city and exit at "Hauptwache".

As above , head into the Center and get off at Hauptwache and you are in the middle of the shopping street with stores like Kaufhof etc... Theres not alot between the Main Station and Hauptwache except for ''alternative'' entertainment LOL...

Considering that the year is roughly 232 hours old, this means that so far, you spent almost 2.4% of this years time at the McDonald's at FRA airport. Big grin

Seriously, the McD is one of the better places to spend some time at the airport when the weather is not too inviting. But 8 hours in a row... I don't know.

Anyway, apart from the observation deck, there is few things I can recommend, as my transfers are usually max. 2-3 hours.

If you have hand luggage which you do not want to carry all the time: there is lockers available close to the McDonald's (one floor below). Make sure you have some Euro coins with you.

What I also could suggest is taking a flight to HAM. Flight time is under 1 hour, so the roundtrip will take you roughly 3 hours. Which means that you will have 5 hours to spend in the most beautiful city of the world  cool   Wink

Depending on the time of year you are flying through, you could also see what is going on at the "Messe" (fair/convention hall). If you happen to be flying through when the auto show is going on, or something else interesting, it might be worth spending a few hours there. Otherwise, if going downtown, the Hauptwache would be the place to get off. See the stock exchange, the old opera house, shopping. Anyone know if Hard Rock cafe is still there around the corner from the stock exchange?
