BA $579 London Special - Is It Worth A Trip?

Tue Jan 15, 2008 12:41 am

Hey Guys:

I was browsing through British Airways website to see what I can find about the A380 and I came across a $579 Special that can give you a "tour" around London, England - information is here: http://www.britishairways.com/travel...ge-us/public/en_us?source=hpbanner and although right now its something I cant afford I however would love to know from those who visit there -or live there if thats a good deal? I myself would love to go there, but I am saving that for the BA 787 A380's to arrive  Wink.

depends how long you stay for, you could easily drop $1000 in a few days if you aren't careful. Nice place to visit though and lots of touristy things if that's what you want.

Any excuse to go to London is a good excuse. Very costly city, but lots to do on the cheap. And they even know me in the book store in the British Museum. GO!

Sounds decent, but London is an expensive city to begin with, especially so with the current state of the dollar, so be careful about that.

The good thing about London is that most of what is worth doing is actually free. The museums, sights, etc. Also, if you are into English Tailoring (and I am), even with the crap exchange rates, British made/branded clothing is often cheaper. I saved a ton on Thomas Pink shirts by buying them in London, and that was before I got the VAT back.

The London is a nice place to visit, but there is so much more to see and do in the rest of the country! Though I wouldn't recommend going any time soon simply because of the typical English winter weather! My parents just came back yesterday and they said the weather was absolutely ghastly!

Wait until "summer" at least your chances are better at getting warm weather!

Well right now I am currently a senior in HS- but London as well as well obviously ( look at my username) Greece is second. My friend as well went there and told me it was cold so if I do decide to go, it will probably be the summer, anyone know if they have good deals for then as well? Another thing I added before is that a part of me kinda wants to wait for BA to get the A380 to make my trip there special, due date for them I think is 2012? If anyone wants to post pictures from London as well, heck that would be great! Is there a lot of "aviation" related things to do in London, aside from spotting at LHR.

London doesn't get that cold. I went in Dec 2006 and it was in the 40s-50s, that's not that cold. And no, you won't find any good deals in the summer.

Speaking from experience,

I go back home to the UK once a year, usually the cheapest month to go is February. Thats when you'll get 3 or 4 seats to yourself which is great for an overnight flight! To go in the summer, I would recommend what I did back in 2005. Myself and a few friends decided to spend 6 weeks touring Europe, we got a great deal with Aer Lingus routing MCO-SNN-DUB-LPL and returning 6 weeks later on BRS-DUB-MCO. We got our TATL segment for $600 each, plus about $40 each for the connection to LPL. Obviously you could substitute this routing for JFK-DUB-LHR. That was from mid-June through end of July. Normally you can expect to pay at least $800+ for a r/t across the pond in the summer.

I'm not sure about anything aviation related to do in London. I hope this helps.

Remember that 2012 is also the year of Summer Olympics in London. Could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.

On the even years is the Farnborough Airshow. Six months from now it will be going on again.

There's the RAF museum in Hendon (northern suburbs), the Imperial War Museum has some old military aircraft hanging from the roof. Also Duxford airfield is a big, outdoor (mainly military) avaition museum just outside Cambridge, maybe 1 1/2 hrs from London by train / bus. If you stay anywhere south of the river, you'll see the approaches into LHR.

It does look like a good deal, although I noticed that the fares do exclude taxes which is going to bump the cost up quite a bit, and then theres the strength of the pound against the dollar at the moment which probably makes a trip to the UK less attractive.

On a side not, you would have thought BA could get someone to type "your" instead of "you" when creating the page...

If you are from the New York area, you will not find London "cold" at this time of the year, wet maybe, but not cold. As to the deal $579 including three nights accomodation sound fairly good, London like New York is not a place with cheap rooms. You can expect to pay £70/night for a room in a budget hotel.

The only problem I can see is that you can not earn AAdvantage miles even though it is a one world alliance.
