I live in St. Louis. I bid my vacations in December for the following year so I generally have plenty of time to search for bargain fares. I do not travel on business so all of my travel is Leisure/VFR.
Over the past few years, when I have searched for flights at the (flexible) times I've wanted to travel one airline stands alone for NEVER having even a remotely competitive fare from STL
to anywhere in the Continental US: US Airways.
I generally don't mind paying an extra $50-75 bucks if it means I can get on a plane I've never flown or go through an airport I haven't been to or been to in a long while. (That's the A-Nutter in me.)
I've been planning to visit some friends in Richmond, VA in May and have been checking fares the past few weeks and finally settled on AirTran, $250 (taxes and fees included) + $10 for seat assignments so I could try out a 717. US was $339 for the same dates, BEFORE taxes and fees so that was a no-brainer for me, but I would still like to try out US sometime. But not at the fares they charge out of STL
. (Flew the old Piedmont a couple of times, and HP
a few years ago, but that's not quite the same thing these days.)
The other airlines I checked out (AA, CO
) were all about the same give or take $25 and slightly higher than FL
, but not to the extent that US was.
So the question is: Which airline at YOUR hometown airport never seems to have decent fares compared to the competition?
