Your Home Airport: Most Expensive Airline

Mon Feb 11, 2008 4:24 pm

I live in St. Louis. I bid my vacations in December for the following year so I generally have plenty of time to search for bargain fares. I do not travel on business so all of my travel is Leisure/VFR.

Over the past few years, when I have searched for flights at the (flexible) times I've wanted to travel one airline stands alone for NEVER having even a remotely competitive fare from STL to anywhere in the Continental US: US Airways.

I generally don't mind paying an extra $50-75 bucks if it means I can get on a plane I've never flown or go through an airport I haven't been to or been to in a long while. (That's the A-Nutter in me.)

I've been planning to visit some friends in Richmond, VA in May and have been checking fares the past few weeks and finally settled on AirTran, $250 (taxes and fees included) + $10 for seat assignments so I could try out a 717. US was $339 for the same dates, BEFORE taxes and fees so that was a no-brainer for me, but I would still like to try out US sometime. But not at the fares they charge out of STL. (Flew the old Piedmont a couple of times, and HP a few years ago, but that's not quite the same thing these days.)

The other airlines I checked out (AA, CO, DL, NW, UA) were all about the same give or take $25 and slightly higher than FL, but not to the extent that US was.

So the question is: Which airline at YOUR hometown airport never seems to have decent fares compared to the competition?

Competition, what competition - we only have one airline at PLH! For the most part fares are reasonable though, just a few routes where they are consistently astronomical, but that's what keeps the airline (Air Southwest) in business.

The same up the road in EXT. There is only one real player: BE, meaning that fares can be high, but there is always a bargain to be had.

Even here in Phoenix, quite often US Airways is the most expensive airline back east, due to the fact they have the only non-stops. Couple of years ago I needed to fly to IAD on very short notice, US and UA wanted over $850 for the non-stops yet, AA and NW were barely over $200 for one-stop and I always find them the most expensive from PHX-PNS. I have always found them more expensive even with 30days notice. Going west they are very competitive with WN.

It seems like from SMF US Airways is the most expensive airline to back east as well. Well, that's not entirely true as sometimes SMF-SFO-CLT as a codeshare with UA is the cheapest routing. The odd thing is that before the merger the old HP had some pretty competitive fares to CLT.

At NCL - it is usually Eastern Airways who are most expensive. There are 'reasonable' fares to be had for booking well in advance (as is the case with most airlines), but they are usually quite pricey. But then again, they do seem to be more of a regional 'business class' airline - and you do get some extra perks in with your ticket. You are looking at £100 - £200 return for just a few hundred miles.

Long haul, SAS/Cimber/Wideroe etc takes the biscuit a bit when it comes to going further afield.

MCI. Probably YX. If you need a last minute fare from them - watch out. One advantage of MCI as an airport with lower volume and no one airline dominating with a hub, is consistently competitive fares among all the carriers. Disadvantage - one might not be able to get a non-stop to every destination you want.

At PHL, if there's no true-LCC competition (by either FL, F9 and/or WN) on a given route; US is very expensive.

At ORF, its probably AA. Our largest carriers are US, WN, and DL/ Just goes to show, the largest carriers aren't always the most expensive  Smile

I've found at PWM the most expensive airline is US Airways. It seems the wherever I need to go, US is always the most expensive.

At TUS it would be either Alaska or US Airways. Alaska is high most of the time so I would say that Alaska is the priciest out of TUS, though I may be wrong.

Oddly enough, I have found most times at SAN that NW is the most expensive airline for cross-country trips. Mostly, but not always.

However, at the current time, Delta's fares for this upcoming summer are the most expensive. Granted, no airline really has its summer schedules loaded, but the differences in SAN-MSP between DL and other airlines is currently running $100-$200 more on DL than on NW, UA, or US.

But things always change...

At NWI we have:

Flybe
KLM
BMI
Eastern Airways

for random dates to Scotland, BMI are consistently more expensive (£200+ one way to Aberdeen) vs. £120 to EDI or GLA on Flybe.

Here at PIT, I'd say it widely varies, but the most expensive when I buy my tickets to MCI is ALWAYS AA.

Well here in GFK:

Most Expensive: Northwest
Cheapest: Northwest

Either way you look at it, Northwest is the cheapest, or if your the disgruntled type the most expensive since they are the only ones that serve GFK. Then people whine about it, but yet UA used to come here and didn't make it work, not to mention all the NW FF here.

FAR:
We have NW, Allegiant, UA, and DL with F9 coming in May.

I have often found good deals on NW and UA, but nothing on DL.

A number of friends have indicated that NW out of Tucson is also expensive. Many now take Sun Country to MSP. I wonder whether carriers that have only one flight a day like AS to Seattle and NW to MSP will be more expensive because of costs associated with their one flight a day operation?

I have researched the three airports I fly out of the most: DFW, OKC, and LAW. Here is what I have found on flights from those cities to JAX on July 23- July 29, 2008 either nonstop, or with a connection ALONG THE WAY (Not up to New England and down to Florida).

DFW:
Cheapest- AA
Expensive- CO

OKC:
Cheapest- NW
Expensive- CO

LAW: It will be either or because we only have AA and DL.
Cheapest- AA
Expensive- DL

Overall, I would have to say if I was flying to JAX, I would look for AA and NW. I wouldn't bother to look at CO. DL is pretty comparable out of LAW.
