SkyMiles Or OnePass?

Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:02 pm

OK.. so with this merger mess poised to happen it seems I need to s#&t or get off the pot on what airline I want to build my miles with. It seems that once DL/NW merge that CO will pull out of skyteam so its def time to make the decision!

I have about 50k on DL and 50k on CO

A Skymiles American Express Gold Card
A OnePass Platinum Master Card

I live in Manhattan..

I love EWR, its easy to get to from the West Side, clean comfortable, open etc..
I like Continentals service for the most part, never had a complaint

Not a huge fan of DL at JFK, tho my last trip out of JFK was a pleasant surprise, no delay (small mech), and it looks much better.

I fine DL's product to be on par (or at least getting there) with CO

So I'm stuck.. any one out there have an opinion on the Miles program of these guys?

If the merger goes through, I am next to positive that they will honor miles from both customers. Not doing so would seem to be a PR nightmare.

Are you going to be flying enough to make elite status? One big thing with CO is you only earn 50% EQMs on several coach fares if you book someplace besides continental.com.

domestic, alhtough I should be sneaking in a international trip this year or early next.

probably not this year, but 2009 I'm going to be traveling much more so the possibility exists next year.

thats good info to know, Skymiles you get 100% Elite on domestic coach fares?

Yup.

The only fares that do not earn 100% MQMs on Delta are the deep discount fares on Continental and China Southern.

With OnePass, a Delta deep discount fare would only yield 50% EQMs to your OnePass account. Thus, if you're only on CO and always using continental.com, it's not a big deal. However, if you take a good amount of partner flights each year, then it could be troublesome for you if you credit to CO.

CO product/service is better than DL especially with food service both first class and economy.

However, it is easier to redeem miles from Delta Skyteam business class-----for instance you can fly to Asia via Europe using the same alloted miles to Asia (120K miles) on business class using any of the SkyTeam and you can even get a free stopover in Europe-----I was given that choice last year but due to time constraints, I opted the following:

PHL-CVG-SFO DL first class
SFO-NRT-HKG NW business class
MNL-NGO-DTW-PHL NW business class

The flight via Europe would have been: with free stopover in Paris

PHL-CDG-HKG AF business class
MNL-AMS-JFK KL business class
JFK-PHL DL economy

I'm not sure now if they have restricted the rules.
When I booked my redeemed flight I was actually dictating the agent what routes/airlines I take and everything is fine as long as the connecting times are 2 hours or more.
