10 Hour Layover In DXB. What To Do?

Tue Mar 04, 2008 8:08 am

Hello everybody, I am having a layover in DXB of about ten hours coming up in about two weeks time. I´ll arrive at around 3 pm and have a connecting flight at 3 am. I haven´t been to Dubai before so I would like to do some sightseeing but am not quite sure how. First of all where can I leave my luggage? I cannot check my bags through as I purchased tickets separately and the airlines don´t have an interline agreement IMO. I guess check-in won´t start that early so I either have to take everything with me or deposit it at the airport. The latter is of course preferred. The question comes up where I can do this? Secondly, I thought about taking a taxi into the city centre but have no idea what the traffic in Dubai is like nor how far away the airport is from the city. Friends of mine told me that traffic is something I have to watch out for but as I said I cannot sum up traffic situations. How could my layover look like? What places could/should I visit?

Sorry in advance if something similar has been asked before. You may tar and feather me for this. I only came across this thread What To Do On A 14hr Stopover In DXB? (by EZYman Jun 26 2006 in Aviation Polls & Prefs) which didn´t really answer my questions. Thanks a lot for your help.

Regards
Florian

It's worth asking when checking in on your first flight, I've checked in bags Hong Kong - Bangkok - Heathrow on China Airlines and Qantas, with an 8 hour wait in BKK. They can only say no, you've a 50/50 chance of not having to worry about bags!

As for Dubai, I've never been but friends warn that traffic is horrendous so leave plenty of time!

Thanks Signol, it is indeed worth a try. I´ll ask the airline.

If I were you, I'd jump in a cab and head to the Jumeirah Beach area. You will of course see the famous Burj al-Arab hotel, but also in the area is Madanat Souk should you feel like doing a bit of shopping (or have something to eat...there are loads of great restaurants there), the Al Qasr and Jumeirah Beach hotels; which are both worth a look; as well as the Wild Wadi water park. Also, not too far away is the Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai.

Right next to the Burj al-Arab is Umm Suqeim beach, which is really nice to chill out on with a great view of the Burj to boot! Plus it's free and you don't have to be staying at a hotel to use it!

Alternatively, you could also head into the older part of Dubai around the Creek, although the opulence of Dubai is not as evident there. But it's fun to take an 'Abra' across the Creek!

There are plenty of other things to do, including taking a bus tour on double deckers that were imported from London! It really depends on where your interests lay, and what you feel like doing...ie, do you want to chill on a beach for a while, do some shopping, see some famous Dubai sights, do a bit of skiing, or even hang out at the airport and do some spotting!!
Ladies & gentlemen this is Captain Tobias Wilcock welcoming you aboard Coconut Airways flight 372 to Bridgetown Barb
