AA To QF At LAX With A Long Layover What To Do?

Sun Mar 23, 2008 10:24 am

I have done a few searches on what to do during a long lay over in LAX. In-N-Out sounds like a good idea, but was curious
about a few things.
First, I arrive at LAX from DEN on AA at 1255 and depart QF at 2230 to SYD. That leaves a lot of time to wonder around. I wouldn't be too fussed, but I will have my two daughters flying with me, 6 and 7 years old. I am flying AA first
and QF business.

I know from past experiences that my AA issued boarding pass will not get me into TBIT for a QF flight. I need a QF boarding pass which requires checking in again with QF. I understand that QF flights LAX to SYD depart terminal 4, however I saw a post about some construction going on there affecting the QF gates. Are QF flights to SYD departing now from TBIT or will they go from terminal 4 in June? I guess if I don't leave terminal 4 during my layover I will be ok without having to recheck in with QF correct?

Having my two daughters with me, I would love nothing more then just to plop myself down in the QF lounge and waste time until boarding but lounges in TBIT are pretty poor from my last trip through there. Needless to say, I will not be able to gain entry to lounges in TBIT until the QF check in desks open which is what, 3 hours before the flight. If I have about 7 hours to spend in LAX pre-secure area, what could I get up to? (In-N-Out is still an option)

Should I just delay my departure from DEN until later in the evening?
THANKS in advance.

Yes, that is what I probably will do, easier to see a movie or something in denver after checking out of a hotel and before turning rental car in.

I'm flying QF SYD-LAX in June and it is showing coming into T4. You'll want to leave T4 if you are there for almost 10hrs, it is pretty small in relation to the other terminals.

There is a fairly decent Admirals Club in T4 but no airline lounge is worth spending 10hrs in. You should get your QF boarding pass at DEN, then you can leave the secure area at T4. Go potter about LA as you please, return and just go through security.

If there spotters, I'd highly suggest the previously mentioned Inn and Out or the Proud Bird.

With 10 hours in Los Angeles, you should be able to get a relatively cheap rental car for about 6-7 hours. Even with LA traffic, it's no more than a 30 minute drive up to Santa Monica where you could spend a day up there - between the beach, the Pier (which has a small amusement park the kids would like) it's a good way to kill some time. Land in LAX at 1255, be at the rental car place by about 145, hop on Lincoln Blvd and head north, be in Santa Monica by 215p. Spend some time up there doing the sights for a few hours, have a nice big dinner, start heading back to LAX by 7-730p. Drop the car off, get back to the airport, and then relax at the lounge.

I would definitely not recommend spending any time at LAX though. 10 hours at an airport is rather long, and there's not a whole lot to do in the general vicinity of LAX.

There is free shuttle service from T4 to In-N-Out.

I would delay my departure if I could. As you said it would be a lot nicer to hang out in downtown Denver, watch a movie or go shopping and stuff than at LAX, even if you did manage lounge access.

Unless of course you could get a hire care at LAX and spend say 6 hours up at Santa Monica like someone suggested.

Option 3 would be to fight it out at LAX. (in my opinion).

good luck  Smile

What no-one has mentioned is that the old lounges in TBIT are all gone.

There is now a brand new joint CX, BA, QF lounge in TBIT that opened about a month ago. Basically all the old lounges were ripped out and there are now four - a oneworld one (the one I just mentioned), one for Star Alliance, Skyteam and a general one.

The oneworld one is completely fitted with showers, computers, food, booze, is brand new, state of the art etc - so make sure you don't miss out on going there!!

I fly out of SYD on 23 May on the QF flight at 1030am and back on 7th June out of denver (sched at 12'ish) via LAX
and on the 1030pm QF flight out of LAX to SYD.

That's because his flight isn't from TBIT. If he's not flying from TBIT he won't be getting in the lounges there  Wink
