KLM AMS-MEX On 747 Combi, What To Expect?

Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:07 am

Hi all!
Just joined yesterday, so sorry if this seems noob-ish.
In May me and my gf are going to Mexico on vacation, and the route is BGO-AMS-MEX-CUN. The itenary says the AMS-MEX leg is going to be a 747 combi. (My first widebody flight so I'm excited) We're flying economy, and I'm wondering what to expect. Seatpitch, service, PTV etc?
We could've booked the trip with CO going OSL-EWR-CUN, would this have been better?
Also, the MEX-CUN leg is flown by AeroMexico, and like KLM they're a member of SkyTeam. Will I earn any miles on this leg?
Thanks in advance.

Is it a daytime or night flight? I've flown the KLM 747 Combi to JNB. Seat pitch is ok, 32" I think I remember. Service was good, attentive, nice food, they hand round ice creams at one point. But no PTV - just a big screen at the front of the cabin, and smaller TVs on the ceilings. Overall, I like it. And had a 6h conenction in AMS on the return, we took the train into town quickly to visit the Van Gogh museum.

Never having flown CO, I can't comment on them.

CO use the 752 to OSL and you get similar seats in Y to the KL flight but with an inch or so more pitch and AVOD in every seat. You have to pay for your drinks though and food is generally not as good as KL in my experience.

KL's 74s are a little long in the tooth but are tidy enough, and the service is fine. Food is good, drinks are free, but as stated, no PTVs at all. AMS-MEX is about ten hours so I'd miss the PTVs personally.

Overall, I'd suggest you would have been better to go OSL-LHR-MEX with BA and then onwards to CUN with Mexicana - much nicer all round.

Yes, I would think the whole flight is added to your SkyTeam miles.

I have flown quite a lot on both airlines on the same routes (from AMS).

The KLM flight AMS-MEX is in my opinion (too) long compared to the seat comfort offered. But hey, KLM's seat pitch is just standard in the industry. If I am not mistaken the seat pitch on CO is similar, the difference is that those CO flights are less long due to the connection in Newark. If you are tall, try to get an exit row seat or similar. To be sure about seatpitches, visit seatguru.com.

Another aspect: some people dislike to transfer in the US. You'll have to go through immigration, get your luggage, clear customs, and get back through security again. But on the other hand, In Mexico City the lines can be long though and you'll have to go through the customs process there too which can be more hassle (due to the volume of traffic) than compared to Cancun. Mexico City is not a particular nice airport to do a transfer, in my opinion.

Clearing customs in Cancun is unquestionably better organized and more pleasant than at Mexico City.

There seem to be a decent number of non-stops from europe to Cancun, at least on charters. I'd say it's a toss-up, going KL or CO, but even if 74M is old, it's less claustrophobic to be in on a long flight than CO's 757s. I think you'll enjoy the trip. I just got back from Cozumel, the weather is beautiful down there... just watch out for the meter tall margaritas...

I haven't flown KL 74M, but I have flown KL M11. It was OK. Nothing particularly special or that memorable.

I have in the past few months flown CO 3 times. I preferred it to KL, but it still wasn't that great.

In Y class on KL 744s I prefer seats in rows 9 through 18 where the seating is 3-2 due to the lengthwise galley on the right side (Kl one of the very few 747 operators with that galley arrangement).
http://www.klm.com/travel/nl_en/trav...ard/seating_plans/747-400Combi.htm

It seems a little quieter and more private in that cabin. And if you don't want a window seat or are travelling with one other person, the 2-abreast seats against the wall on the right side of that cabin are good (the D E seats). There's a fairly large gap between the seat and the wall so it's not like you're jammed up against the wall.

The first row ABC and HJK seats (and the front row DE seats in that first Y class cabin) have unlimited legroom but those seats also have the tray tables in the armrests which can seem slightly more confining due to the tray housing between the seats. For most passengers the unlimited legroom would probably more than offset that.

Thanks for all your replies.
Seems I could have chosen both BA/Mexicana and CO for the trip and had a better experience in-flight-wise.

Yes, leaving AMS 13:00 local time, and arrival-time is 17:30 local time MEX.

Could I have gotten better seatpitch in economy if I had chosen an other airline?

Thanks for the heads up..  Smile

Also, on the return leg we have some hours to kill in AMS before we return to BGO. Are there any possibilities for spotting from the terminal or do I have to get outside?

Why would anyone want to connect at LHR if they can possibly avoid it? And BA only operates 4 times weekly LHR-MEX while all other major carriers operating Europe-MEX are daily (or more than daily in several cases, e.g. AF/IB/AM).
