Is It Worth Upgrading On BA LHR-FCO?

Fri Mar 28, 2008 8:14 am

Hi everyone,

I am travelling on honeymoon in August to Rome and was thinking about paying the upgrade to Club Europe on our tickets. We are flying out on an A320 and back on a 767. The flight from LHR leaves at 16:15 and the flight back from Rome is 11:55.

Just wondering what I could expect with my upgrade and any opinions about the service. Thanks

On a shorthaul? Nah... I'd save the money - maybe take a better hotel room instead, I think you'll be able to enjoy that more.

Having said that, I've never flown BA in Club Europe, just in the rows behind that... but both comfort-wise and service-wise, I never got to see anything that I thought was worth the extra cash...

Going by my (not really extensive) experience with other intra-European business class flights there as well...

For me it's never worth it. Unless it's something very minimal like they were doing ex LGW and then for lounge access, more space and a meal, priority checkin in at the zoo LGW was... the 50 quid was worth it.

However if its more I wouldnt do it. The seating is pretty much the same pitch, If you sit on the right side its the same configuration as in economy...2-3 on the narrow bodies and on 767 its a bit more spacious at 2-2-2 but still.

Service wise I have found the service to be a little more personalised and friendly but again not to the same extent that you find on long haul business class.

I'd say go for it. How often do you go on honeymoon? Plus if you can get a discounted I class return then it won't run to much more than £240 per person.

It's not amazing but then you aren't paying a lot of money for it either. Faster check-in, fast track security, lounge access, slightly wider seat if you get the A-C side, better service onboard, something mildly edible etc.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful. I take it then that the food will be different? The deli sandwich that is on offer in economy doesn't really do it for me. I have never flown business class before and I suppose that going on honeymoon is pretty special lol.

For your Honeymoon !!! Go for it .... its a one off special occasion and I'm sure your Mrs to be would appreciate it . Maybe keep it a secret and surprise her. Check in early and make use of the lounges.

Oh yeah, no Deli sandwiches here...I haven't written up any of my last few CE flights but here is something to give you a bit of a taster. BA Club Europe: Gatwick-Jersey-Gatwick (with Pics) (by Fbgdavidson Jul 19 2005 in Trip Reports) BA Club Europe: LGW-AMS-LGW (with Pictures) (by Fbgdavidson Sep 26 2005 in Trip Reports) BA First & Club Europe: IAD-JER-IAD (pics + Vids) (by Fbgdavidson Jul 27 2006 in Trip Reports)

Admittedly all of these are from Gatwick but you get an idea of the inflight service.

In my opinion business class in Europe is never worth it unless someone else is paying for it or the cost to upgrade is very low. You can get more value for the fare difference by spending it on a better hotel or some nice meals in Rome.

I agree.

For the amount of money you would save by not upgrading, you could stay for a few nights in one of the best hotels in Rome - and that, I believe, would be far more romantic and memorable.

I have booked a hotel about 2 miles out of Rome centre. Crowne Plaza St. Peters. Got outdoor pool and lots of facilities, so am hoping the Mrs will like it. Am probably going to keep the upgrade a secret if I do it, can't wait to see the Mrs' face when we walk into the Galleries lounge.

I still won't be able to get our seats until on-line check in. Does anyone know what the loads are like on a Tuesday night to Rome and a Saturday back? Am looking forward to flying in a 767 as I have never been on one before, I just hope that we don't get the two middle seats.

They are the better, more spacious seats. CE is 2-2-2 in the 767 whereas ET is 2-3-2. The centre seats are the ones where three seats combine to make two slightly bigger than normal ones plus a mini newspaper/junk hole.

You're either underestimating the costs of hotels in Rome, or overestimating the price of flying CE.

While fully flexible J class fares within Europe might be pricey, for a honeymoon trip the discounted CE rates are great VFM, maybe £100pp return over ET. I don't know many of the 'best hotels' in Rome, or any European city where you could get a few nights for £200.

But that will pay for several very nice meals in Rome, certainly better than a business class meal on BA.

this is true - it really depends how you look at it and how much money you wanna spend.

Like I said above, I think if its about 50quid per person each way then I think its definitely worth it - especially more for a honeymoon, once in a lifetime experience. Any more and you have to then consider I guess. (but if its overly expensive then some fancy hotels and meals would do the trick too!)

Maybe just do it being your honeymoon  Wink
