Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:21 pm

Anyone know what City has the most International airports?

I'm Thinking London:

Heathrow
Gatwick
Stansted
Luton
City

Biggin Hill?
Northolt?
Kent?

Are we talking "within the city limits"? Or metropolitan areas?

In either case, I think London wins - I cannot think of any other locations on the planet with five international airports with commercial service.

What about LA, or does that not count cause of all the other cities the airports are in. LA has to be up there, like 4 maybe 5. Perhaps I am just thinking of the many airports in that region. I can only think of two for sure LAX, ONT but I don't know about the others.

Loosely speaking:

New York metro:
JFK
LGA
EWR
HPN
ISP
SWF

Los Angeles metro:
LAX
BUR
SNA
LGB
ONT

I think you should clarify international airport. There are many international airports with customs/immigration facilities, but no commercial flights. Lots of small airports handle international GA traffic.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

If you go by LA's CSA metro, then you'd also have to add Palm Springs, Palmdale, and Oxnard - all of which have scheduled airline service.

I agree, London has the most International traffic not to mention the busiest airports by passenger traffic on Earth.

I assume you are only referring to airports with international service which obviously makes virtually all airports in Europe international airports. The Los Angeles area also has five airports with scheduled service (LAX/BUR/LGB/SNA/ONT) but not all have international service due to the different geography of the U.S. vs. Europe. But many flights from the secondary airports serving the Los Angeles area are much longer than typical flights from LTN/STN/LCY.

The New York area also has at least 5 airports with scheduled service (JFK/LGA/EWR/HPN/SWF).

London has 5 international airport, LA Basin and NYC area only 3. I know AC use to fly to HPN, but I dont think they do anymore. Moscow has at least 3 international I believe.

SNA is not an international airport. No customs office that that field.

Do HPN, SWF, and ISP have international arrival facilities? If so, then they can be counted as international airports. If not, they are simply in the metro area.

LGB, SNA, and BUR do not have international facilities. AS was going to do an SNA-YVR route, but it was cancelled, even with American pre-clearance at YVR.

Second runner up would probably be Moscow, Russia - Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domededovo (DME), Vnukovo (VKO), and Bykovo (BKA). Someone familiar with Russia could probably tell us if VKO and BKA have scheduled international service.

I don't think BUR has an FIS desk either. ONT does, PSP also, does LGB? But again airports such as SNA, BUR only serve airports across a U.S. border with a pre-clearence FIS facility such as YVR, YYC, YEG etc...

For Paris,if I count the Ryanair way....
CDG,
ORY,
LBG,
BVA,
And for a few month, we even had POX (Pontoise) (with a short lived operation by a British low cost)
That's just the "majors". Otherwise, I should add TNF (Toussus le Noble)

(If I do it the normal way, I just consider CDG, ORY and LBG)

You could say that number is six, as SEN (London Southend) has a service to JER and FlyWatch serves a couple of destinations on a summer scheduled basis in France.

An interesting topic. VKO does have international service with Rossiya flying to LHR among other places - there may well be some CIS routes there too. LBG, although an international airport, does not have scheduled passenger services (it does have cargo though).

London certainly takes the cake here, I would think, especially given how busy its many international airports are.
