Of The Airlines Gone, Who Do You Miss The Most?

Sat Apr 05, 2008 12:02 pm

Of all the airlines that are no longer with us, who do you miss the most ?

For me it would be:

Braathens S.A.F.E ( Norwegian airline bought up by SAS )

and

Pan Am

I naturally ment the original Pan Am

I was lucky to fly with them in the final years of operation. In 1988 and 1990.

For me it is Ansett. We used to fly them all the time when we lived in Melbourne 8 years ago. We would still fly them if they were here now, the best thing with them was star alliance.

Braathens S.A.F.E comes second, naturally, as more competition in Norway would be great, although Norwegian Air Shuttle is great. Also good to see there hybrid livery still on a couple SAS aircraft.

I am still relatively young, and never got the chance to fly Pan Am, TWA, etc.

The airline I would have wanted to fly the most of the 'extinct' airlines of the US, would be TWA.

MidwestExpress and Midwest are the same airline. Midwest Express changed their name in 2002 to Midwest. They did this so the the average American wouldn't think YX was just a regional carrier. They then also changed the name of their actual regional carrier (Skyway Airlines) to Midwest Connection.

Mortyman I'm with you on Braathens S.A.F.E, I cant think of many other airlines with such a nice & patriotic livery (apart from British Caledonian!). I spent a great couple of days at Oslo Fornebu back in June 1998 getting some great photo's at this great now sadly gone airport! I also think livery wise CP Air with their orange red & silver really stood out!

Air Europe, so many hopes, so many aspirations

Britannia, the spirit lives on in Thomsonfly, but every other trace of her has been removed  Sad

BWIA, Bee Wee going on a caribbean vacation...?  Wink

Air Manchester, short lived, but remembered
Note: Not one of the airlines in this pic still exists  Sad

Swissair, such a classy operator

And top of the slots, British Caledonian. How I wish they all could be Caledonian.

Canadian Airlines, especially those DC-10s. I kinda wonder if they might have gone Airbus, they did get A320s. An A340 in Proud Wings would be gorgeous, but frankly I would have taken that livery on anything.

Chalks Ocean Airways, they were alot of fun to fly and actually really convenient too. I wish they were still around so i could go to the Port of Miami and watch them land and even take a few flights. I flown them many times and it was always a great experiance and alot of fun such a tragic ending to the airline too.
Also I miss the old ATA alot, when they had a real hub in MDW and even had alot of flights out of IND too. That airline was great I only flew them 3 times FLL-MDW-FLL and MDW-LGA but those three times were great!

I sure miss the old SAS too! I remember back in the days when they had friendly F/As and complimentary in-flight service. Besides they always made sure that i had a drink in my hand even when flying Y Big grin. Now days the F/As
aren't as nice as they were back in the days, Instead of giving you a drink for free they throw it in your face and yell "Give Me The Money!" (it once happened me) The only thing that is good with them now is their seats, but soon they will be replaced with some crappy Recaro seats (not the good ones found on Swiss). But there's one airline that offers almost the same service as back in the days, that airline is Air France (i guess that many of you think that i'm mad saying that).

Reno Air!

What a great outfit they were! It was so convenient to take them nonstop from YVR-RNO twice daily.
They really were a lot of fun. There seemed to be a great pride within the employee group, which is
rare these days. It was an airline that was totally fitting for the City of Reno. It was casual, without being
tacky, a lot of fun, and great service much like.... Western Airlines....which is another airline I miss very
much, largely because of the fact I was employed by them at YVR from 1975 to 1987, when we merged
with Delta. I have only been back to Reno once since Reno Air went out of business, flew Southwest from
OAK. Although I have no complaints about Southwest, it just was not the same to arrive in Reno and see
the whole concourse that Reno Air occupied almost empty. I still love Reno, though, although it too has
changed a lot in the last few years. I hope to get back there sometime soon.
A lot of us loved you, Reno Air!
Cheers,

BWI is my home airport and I will miss Piedmont until the day I die. They had a wonderful hub here with lots of nonstop destinations, two club rooms (were they called President's Clubs?), a generous upgrade program, a good frequent flier program and friendly service.

Also:

Western
the original Frontier
Ozark (toward the end they had wine tastings with one each red and white)
Republic (upgrades for 15 bucks)

Was that route map just announcing service from IAD or did all their service originate from there? Kind of strange to call it New York Air if it's the latter.

My vote goes to Pan Am. Not only was it the first airline I ever flew, but it was also the first one I flew in First Class! Except for those last few years, they certain brought that special something to US aviation that we haven't seen in a long, long time.

I flew often in and out of Burban, With its short runway I recall a PSA pilot announcing after landing, "Welcome to the USS Burbank!"

From what I've heard, the current Swiss doesn't cut it.
