How Do You Find The Best Fares?

Tue Apr 08, 2008 11:06 am

Hi all !

Well everything is in the title, I'd like to know about your habits when you want to book a flight... I usually look at www.itasoftware.com to see what I can expect, then look at www.avion.fr (french farefinder) or www.mobissimo.fr (or .com) and finally compare with the airline's website itself...

I know that many of you use www.kayak.com ... Any other farefinder or tips to recommand ?

Thanks a lot !

While I usually go to airline's website and the usual online travel agencies like expedia, opodo etc. there also is skyscanner.net ...
For flights out of Germany I also look into skyways.de to get an imprssion on fares.
I tried to use amadeus.net for fares several times but without success (I could never select flights for the last leg).

I always use the airlines website unless i need a little "hint" about airlines operating the route. In that case, i choose www.lcc24.com.

Sometimes i spend hours and hours searching the best fare / routing / airline or a/c. Some friends call me crazy, but as soon they need a cheap flight, i'm most welcome to book it for them...  Wink

My pleasure ...
But information on that website is not always absolutely up to date, so checking with the respective airline's website is strongly advised.

Btw, have you seen the thread for the next A.net meeting in ZRH ? This meeting is one of the few meetings that actually is aimed at avaiation rather than hanging around and getting drunk ...

Absolutely depends on the route(s) you intend to travel.
Many LCC's flights are not available outside their proprietary booking engine (FR, U2, ...), whereas the better LCC's are bookable via amadeus and the likes.

Another good engine for me is http://www.bcd-travel-direct.com (I use the german variant), but here you better know your exact travel dates ...
But this website also offers flights on Southwest and sometimes comes up with quite interesting itineraries. However, be prepared to pay a handling fee when booking flights (but that's more or less the norm nowadays, or ?) ...

I did. And i'm actually considering to go. Just haven't signed up yet.
(Since i'm quite new here on A.net, it would be my first meeting!)

Btw, it's slightly below 0 °C at my place. But i already enjoyed 5 warm weeks "down under" this year, so who cares... Silly

I almost always go through things like Expedia, Opodo, and airline websites - and so far, I've always ended up booking the flights in one of the GDSs I have at the office, because - so far - never has any other channel offered a lower price than what I could find there: whenever I found a good deal on an airline website, I was able to get at least the same, and often better, deal in Amadeus or Sabre.

Orbitz always gives me a rundown of not only which airlines are flying that route, but an approximation of the airfare/schedule combo I'm looking for!

For example, for my Minnesota trip this summer at 4th of July, I started with Orbitz to tell me whose schedule was closest to what I needed AND what the prices were. Frontier was the lowest, and after double-checking with the airlines' websites (nobody can be 100% accurate all the time), I went with F9.

I'm not a FF nor do I have an allegiance to any airline/team, so price is the main consideration to me in most cases. Being a school teacher gives me zero chance of flying on business, so everything comes out of my pocket. Orbitz sometimes gives me a rundown, although some airlines are preferred because of the type of planes they fly...

I've seen U2 flights on Expedia. I've only seen them from LGW though.

I usually check the airline websites for the best fares. On LH, booking a flight to CMN is rather impossible because their booking system is messed up. Me and my family usually buy flights from "our" travel agency (that i don't remember the name of). We have been buying tickets from them for many many years and they always give the best fares. One good thing about them is that they can find flights for two or three days in advance for the same price as if you would have booked two months in advance.

Check on Amadeus first, using ValuePricer. Then go to Opodo, check if they have better fares. Check also Expedia.fr. If one airline stands out as being best, I go to the airline website to check there. Book wherever there's the best fare. If the airline is using Amadeus behind their booking engine, go into the booking, add my FF, APIS data and pre-reserve my seats.

Interesting that nobody has mentioned www.amadeus.net so far.

Go to the page,

Click on your language

Put in your destinations and dates etc and then

Click on Best fares.

By clicking on on of the fares you will be redirected to the airlines homepage or a travel site.

Hope this helps.  Smile

I usually check Orbitz or Kayak to get an idea of what fares and schedules are like, but now more often than not I go to the airline's website to do the actual booking. Typically you'll find the same fares directly from the airline's website, but you'll save the booking fee those other sites charge.

Back when I was eligable for student or youth discounts, I used STA Travel a lot. I once was able to get a flight to Hawaii through them for around $200 cheaper than the lowest fare I could find anywhere else. (Though now that Aloha is gone I kind of regret not going with them, which I would have done had I not that really cheap fare).

If I'm travelling within the UK then I will first check the trains using www.nationalrail.co.uk and sometimes the coaches as well, then after that I will look at the various airline websites and see what their fares are like. If it's not tremendously more than the train then I'll pay to fly, if not I'll sit for hours on the train instead. Quite often it's actually a lot cheaper to fly!

For other flights I'll check known LCCs and also Expedia, plus Opodo as Expedia are unable to issue tickets to several countries which I plan to visit or have already been to. once I've found the cheapest I then usually disregard it anyway, instead choosing the more interesting routing - so long as it's not more than about £50 more than the very cheapest for a short/meduim haul flight, or £100 for a long haul flight.

When flying domestically in the US I always book on delta.com. When flying internationally (20+ times per year) I always fly SkyTeam and always use the same travel agent based in Hanoi. She is able to beat any internet fares by 15% or more.

www.swoodoo.de is a good source although only availlable in German
(but the page may be still relatively easy to navigate even if you have no German language skills ... ! )

This page also lists LCC´s like Ryanair etc. incl. taxes !

I just contact my works travel department, and get staff rates. Saved $2000 on my up-coming Y+ USA/Europe/HKG trip. No complaints here

If you can speak the language, ITA Software ( www.itasoftware.com ) is the best to find what you really want.

Two sites I use:

www.travelfusion.com allows bookings for many LCCs, including EasyJet. A great search engine shows you all the possible combination of outbound and inbound flights allowing you to mix and match for the cheapest price.

www.clubtravel.ie is also a good site which usually offers some great fares, although only from Irish origins. I usually use this site however to explore the possible routings from DUB or BHD.
