Anyone Depressed About The Aviation Industry?

Thu Apr 10, 2008 7:24 pm

Is anyone else depressed about the current state of the aviation industry?

I am! For 2 big reasons and lots of others:

1. OIL COSTS, OIL COSTS, OIL COSTS... Just when the US legacy airlines were getting their costs in line and starting to make a profit, the cost of oil has thrown everything into a death sprial.

From what I can tell, AA, UA, DL, NW & CO have all down a pretty good job at improving their bottom line as much as they can with lowered labor costs, profitable routes maximized, unprofitable routes eliminated, capacity reduced, fleets simplified, gas guzzler aircraft retired (727, 732, DC-9, DC-10), trimmed staff, fares competitive with LCC, improved products... more depressing...

I don't think there is much more they can do except raise fares which they need to do. But raised fares will scare away some flyers, reducing demand... more depressing...

And now...we are losing some carriers, Aloha, ATA, Skybus. Maybe this isn't so depressing since it was their time to go and this can only help the legacies...but who is next...depressing isn't it?

2. 787 DELAYS... Waiting for the A380 to enter service was like watching grass grow while someone slowly scratched their nails across the chalkboard. Waiting for the 787 power on and first flight and eventual delivery is even more painful... The 787 won't be delivered until almost 2010 now, holy cow, I was hoping to fly on it in a couple of months... Alan Mulally got out just in time, he must of known...

3. Then of course we have the FAA crack down (LONG OVERDUE) and all of the groundings. I am glad they are doing this but still depressing...

4. And the demise of historic great airlines like Varig, Alitalia, Olympic...

I understand your points but to be honest its life. Nothing ever stays the same and we all have hurdles and obstacles to get over. Sometimes things that happen in the industry make me sad or angry but to be honest it has survived alot and will survive in future. For me the A380 program was a boost to my enthusiasm even with all the delays. The 787 whilst also delayed will be another boost to me as I cant wait to fly on both the A380 and the 787.

One thing that is for sure and thats the standard of staff and customer service has plummeted on lots of airlines. Things that go on today and the attitude of staff would have not been accepted 10-15 years ago. Thats something I wish we could go back to.

I, for one, am saddened by the state of the aviation industry, but I have been that way for a very long time - ever since the first big name disappeared: Braniff. It was then I realized that things do NOT stay the same, and a name does not always ensure staying power.

I remember when Pan Am sold its Pacific division - as happy as I was for United, I foresaw the end of Pan Am as a global power. I was saddened by its loss, as I was when TWA finally succumbed to Carl Icahn's biblically evil leeching.

However, when I am travelling, I go into the airport with a positive attitude, SMILE at every employee I see, and I am absolutely determined to enjoy my flight, come what may. 99% of the time I get a smile returned - sometimes in shock - and I ALWAYS thank everyone I see when my flight works out well.

Flying is still a joy - but it is what you make of it.
