Which Side Do You Prefer?

Sat Apr 12, 2008 7:24 pm

Just curious to hear which side you guys prefer to sit on on a aircraft and why.

I actually prefer the left side of the aircraft. Why?? I dont know.

I always try to sit on the side that will have the most to see outside the window. For example, on a JFK - Florida run, I will sit on the right side of the plane so I can see the cities that we are passing, and for the return sit on the left side.

Strangely enough I tend to sit on the left side of the plane and if possible infront of the engines. That only tends to work on low cost airlines in the UK where you can grab the seat you want. I have sat in the middle seat on a 777 and hated every minute of it, not being able to see out of a window. I also sat very near the back on an MH 747 and found it to be very noisy.

Just sat in seat 5A on a WW flight between EMA and EDI and enjoyed every minute of it.

Depending on the time of day, the general heading etc; the side that is OPPOSITE of the SUN

Same here, except if there is any special landmark to be expected on either side (e.g. Swiss Alps on left side when flying ZRH-GVA)

Right side, not sure why. I prefer the aisle, so it's not the view. Good question!

Hmmm, same for me too. Unless of course I will be flying around dawn or sunset, in which case I usually take the side that will afford the best view of the sun

Left side as it is the same side the Pilot sits on. When I am flying on a DC-9/MD-80 Series aircraft I prefer to sit on the side with 2 seats regardless of left/right.

Funny! Me, I really don't care as long as I have an aisle seat. I just don't want one too close to the lavatories or the last row that doesn't recline, especially long haul.

Wherever there is an open window seat that fits with the preferences of my travel companions. Avoiding the sun is good too. My primary concern is spotting, but predicting which runway/taxi route you will use (and therefore which side of the plane is optimal) is a complete crap shoot.

This is actually a really good question because I've been trying to figure out why I HAVE to sit on the right side (aisle) on all my flights. It didn't really matter when I flew non-rev, but now that I fly revenue a lot, I kinda' panic when I can't find a seat on the right side aisle. Strange.

Always on the aisle seat, or the exit row (as long as I'm not the person in the middle of the 3 seats).

Otherwise, I have no preference for left or right side of the plane.

In my head, I am always thinking of seats on the left hand side when I buy tickets. No reason really. Maybe it's because the captain sits on the left, or I read left to right, so I see left first, I don't know. I usually try to pick seats that will give me the best view and/or best arrangement (ie 1 seat side on the small ERJ's).

Overall, the right side. Depending on aircraft, I tend to like being somewhere before the engines.

Firstly I think about what I'll be flying over, or if I'll be able to see somewhere I know or live during the approach if I sit on a particular side. If there's nothing special then I will chose a seat based on which side the sun will be and, as many on here, I try to get in front of the engines so that I can have a clear view out, without the jet-blast or contrails (on longer aircraft) getting in the way.

I fly WN about 10 times a year to SMF. Since all flights first stop in LAX, SAN or LAS I try to change sides depending on the city we are landing in. I like to take in different views.

Most of my flights I sit on the right hand site (when I am on duty Big grin)

But when I am travelling as passenger: I don't care at all! As long as I get a seat I am fine Big grin

I prefer the left side of the aisle, either a B or C-type seat. I've got badly damaged knees with the right knee much worse than the left. This way I can stretch it out in the aisle for most of the trip.

O.k. - love hearing about others thought process/preferences concerning this. . .

For work -- Y - aisle seat -- usually right side. Exit row or as forward as I can get. If I can snag F cabin seat. Don't really care where it is. . .

For vacation if we are in F on a two aisle wide body -- usually like mid cabin. Right or left for the window. Depends on the aircraft also. Ex: on AA's 763's we sit on the left in F for direct access to the F cabin lav. On the right you have to cross over through the forward galley. Only an a.net geek like me plans details like that!!

I used to like the left side, but then for no reason I switched to the right. I now try to switch it up. For example, next flight I take I made it so going there I am on the left side, but coming back, I'm on the right.

Unless there's a specific reason for sitting on a particular side of the aircraft (views etc.), I tend to find that I alternate. I always try and get a window seat as I have a specific need to know what's going on outside the aircraft, but if my last flight was on the left hand side of the aircraft, my next will be on the right...and vice versa.

I guess we all have our own foibles!

The side I'm on doesn't particularly matter to me, but I love having a window seat... especially when the window looks out on something other than the top of the wing.

I always pick the left side of the aircraft when flying out of ARN, the reason to that is that you get a nice view of the airport. Otherwise i prefer to sit on the opposite side of the sun, i hate it when my lap gets burned by the sun. On the Mad Dog i prefer to sit on the 2-seat side in the back of the plane in order to get a nice view of the engines.

for a short flight it doesn't matter, but if its a longer one always left. once i'm done looking out the window or were over water, i sleep much better leaning on something to the left of me than the right. ps i'm sorry if i've ever rolled over and tried to sleep leaning on you  guilty

I try to pick the side which I think will have the best views en route and/or at the airports. If I'm not sure which side is better for views, I tend to end up on the right-hand side more often than the left. No idea why, I guess I just like the letter F more than A...

There are times when I fly North to South couple of hours before sunset, thats the worst time to sit on the right side. I always want to keep my windows open! At all other times I prefer the last row on the right side, of course a window seat!

I prefer to sit on the left (by the window if possible) It's strange, because whenever I travel in someone else's car, I prefer to sit on the left too. But obviously when I'm driving I don't have much choice.  Sad

Agreed - in my case an aisle seat on the shady side.

I heard that the term POSH has its origins from the old steamship days. Passengers paid a premium for staterooms on the shady side of the ship on the runs between England and the Far East. In order to get the shady side the notation on the ticket was POSH: Port Out, Starboard Home.

I like sitting on the side where the sun is! Either you have a beautiful sunrise or a lovely sunset! I enjoy looking out of the window if the sun is there! I love the sun so I like sitting on that side! And if I want to sleep: Close the shade close your eyes and good night!

It always depends on my mood. But since I am travelling most of the time on staff tickets I hardly have a chance to choose. If I can choose I try to find out the runway we will be using to see a lot of things as I am filming my take offs always.  Smile

It depends where I'm flying to. If I'm headed out to Las Vegas, I've tended to sit on the starboard side outbound, as the track the flights I've taken into LAS typically give a great view of the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead. One flight we lucked out and came in from the north so I got a nice view of the Strip at night on approach. When headed back, I just about always sit on the port side, also for scenery reasons.

Now if it looks like the bulk of the flight will be in the clouds, it really doesn't matter.

Always on the side of the aircraft that will be facing away from the sun, based on when the flight leaves and arrives. So LHS transatlantic west-bound usually, and RHS east-bound (over night). RHS to Asia, LHS back from Asia. And window seat, always.

Side where the stuff I want to see will be. When coming home to PIT from the west, if I sit on the left, I see my church and downtown. Sit on the right, and I see Coraopolis, and in particular, home sweet home. But this only works when the 28's and 32 are open. Leaving Kansas City, I pick the right since I can see the cargo ramp slower than from the runway if I was on the left, this being if I'm leaving from A or B and taking off on 19R. It's all a guess when it comes to which side to choose, but for the past few years, I've been right. Dead right.

Now, if I'm flying on a plane that has 1-2 or 2-3/3-2 seating, I'm sitting on the side with the least seats, namely the single seat or the side with two seats instead of three, regardless if it's on the left or right.
