Longest Possible Flight In The World

Sat Apr 12, 2008 10:50 pm

What would be the longest possible flight in the world. It doesn't have to be flown by an airline and it doesn't matter if there is an aircraft that could do it either. Also traveling from 1 airport around the world to the same airport doesn't count. After using the great circle mapper I found ULN-SCL to be 11425 mi flight. That is a very looooooooong flight. Can anybody find something longer than this?

Don´t know if that counts but a real one is SIN-JFK non-stop on SQ. (don´t know how much the distance is though)

More like Singapore to EWR. It has become an all "Executive Business Class" flight, no more Economy.  Yeah sure

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

This one turned out to be only 9537mi

This one is indeed even longer. Interesting.

The maximum possible is 10801 nm, and in other threads people have found airport-pairs within maybe 4 nm of that.

Not even close...

EWR-SIN is currently the longest route actually flown, but the OP is asking about longest possible in a hypothetical sense.

EWR-SIN: 9535mi
SYD-LHR: 10573mi
EZE-PVG: 12176mi

The longest possible in a hypothetical sense would be to start at one point at the equator and fly the half way of it.
Approximately 12450 miles.

If i remember correctly, the longest ever non-stop commercially-operated service (i.e. someone paid to fly) ever flown was a non-stop charter for Tony Blair BRU-SYD with a British Airways B777-200ER. I make that:

10,393 miles
9,032 n.miles
16,727 km
Next Up: Back to the US - Charlotte & Kansas City

These are some of the longest I could find;

WIBB (Pekanbaru, Indonesia) to SEQU (Quito, Ecuador) at 12,407 miles.
LFMT (Montpellier, France) to NZCI (Chatham Islands, New Zealand) at 12,409 miles.
YPXM (Christmas Island) to FKSU (Fundacion, Colombia) at 12,413 miles.

If you keep searching hard enough I'm sure you will hit a pair which are about 12,440 miles apart, I just can't be bothered at the moment!  silly

I find it interesting that if you plug in UIO-SIN and UIO-KUL on the GCM, you get two completely different flight paths.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

I found one where I beat you by two miles. PVG-COC is 12,415 mi.

Edit: I lied. I found another one that is even longer! SYX-ARI is 12,430mi!

I still think that somewhere you should be able to find a set of airports almost exactly on the opposite side of the world to each other, just takes more time looking than I had earlier  Smile

Actually, just now I found something to make this easier. On the great circle mapper just enter the 3 letter code for any airport and click search. Once its on the map then click the full name that is right under the map. It takes you to a page with info about the airport and when you scroll down it says farthest location! This is how I found that SYX-ARI is 12,430min.

Well now that easier - I was just playing about on Google Earth - something which I do a lot anyway!  silly

I suppose you could go JFK-EWR by circumnavigating the globe, but that would just be stupid.

wow thanks for this info!

another long one i found is from Alert, Canada (northernmost operating airport in the world) to Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in antarctica. This one is 10350nm and 11911mi. Not only that, you are flying almost due south as your initial heading.
