Your Favourite National European Airline In 2008?

Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:11 pm

Hi all!
I asked you the same question last year;
What is your best National (ok they are no more national lol) European airline in 2008?

For me, it is AF. A shame that their short haul fleet is not a mix of 737NGs and A32Xs, though.
What about you?

Hi,

I have flow on British Airways and Swiss Airlines this year and I must say both were excellent. Return flights were normally £70-90 return and both served food/drink etc. even on short flights. Having not flown every carrier or even many I can't really vote for who's best but I will say those two at least were excellent on the flights I took.

Of course though if I'm honest my most flown is Ryanair!

P.

I've not flown many national carriers this year, so I'll give brief overview of the good ones in general so far.

By legroom and general seat space they are individually non-discrenable, fitting into simply good or acceptable; Air Europa, Air Southwest, FlyBe, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines and Ryanair were good, whilst ClickAir, Spanair, Jet2 and BA CityFlyer were merely acceptable, with quite cramped legroom and in the case of BACF very tight seats.

As far as punctuality goes, Ryanair really fit the bill with great performance, whilst all of the others were pretty good as well, no more than a single short (under 1 hour) delay on a FlyBe flight.

Service wise, BACF really excelled, not because their cardboard sandwich tasted especially nice - because it didn't, but because the crew spoke to passengers by name and treated them as if they were a guest of the airline, not just a money making entity shuffled on and off the aircraft. None were especially poor, although some of the staff on ClickAir seemed morbidly depressed and it was nice to hear that FR's crews could all speak English cohesively.

Not flown on any "national" carriers this year but my impressions of the ones I have -

FR (B738) - On time both ways. Seat slightly uncomfortable and pitch not great. Service OK if you wanted to us it.
T3 (J41) - Excellent service - Hot towels, sweets, complimentary drinks. J41 very noisy! Seat pitch brilliant (got exit row both ways) Staff new regular customers by name and chatted with them. Even asked me how my boss was when she found out who I worked for as my boss does the flight once a week at least!
BE - (DH8) - Leg room fine no problems, on time, service no problems

Over all I think i would have to go for T3 because of the little extras such as the hot towels and also being a smalle airline they gave the impression of much better customer services!
The best way forwards is upwards!

SAS - despite all the not so great things about the company and their many unions wreaking havoc, I still have a soft spot for them. Partly because I am Swedish.

The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

I would have to say SAS, probs because I use them all the time. They have odd union problems but great FFP easy check in and booking. Second would be BMI, i love the small regional planes, uncrowded and great for short trips albeit can be pricy somtimes. My 10 cents.

I've always been loyal to Aer Lingus but even when I compare them to other airlines Aer Lingus has come out as the better option for me. Lower fares, better on time performance, more choice to Ireland and a good on board product. Certainly value for money!

SAS!!! They have a lot off issues to sort out, but the "good" staff they have are outstanding!!!! The poor staff are shockingly bad, and Management really must address this problem immediately. Their product across the Atlantic in Business is brilliant, its always been genuine and well executed. I have a love/hate relationship with FR. I hate them because they are awful, but i love their fares!!!
The best airline is Europe (not a national carrier tho) is Monarch! They have created the perfect ballance between low-cost and full-service! U can travel for nothing, or in Business Class comfort with 38" legroom for a small price. For £6 you can have a 3 course hot meal if you want! Brilliant!!!

Hmm, not an easy one.

I have to say it is AY, OS, SK, . Love to fly all of them and it is always a pleasure. LH is not far behind btw.  Smile

For me it's always gonna be BA, just love them

But I havent flown them in the last year:

I've flown

TOM: MAN-TRN-MAN Good flights, nice airline, nice crew. Late though as usual
EZY: EMA-GVA-EMA. Reallly impressed with them. Nice clean a/c and lovely crews. I'm an orange converter
AEU: LBA-CMF-LBA Nice airline. Sh*tty catering and CMF is awful, but crews were nice.

As for the next year

Proabably an LCC to Europe in summer
Maybe a Caribbean trip early next year using VS or BA long haul Big grin:D:D
Booked on the same TOM flight to TRN again, back to La Thuile for the fifth ski trip Big grin

Thanks BA787

What is a national airline?
I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)
