Is TAM AS Good AS Varig WAS?

Mon Apr 14, 2008 2:57 pm

i am a star-alliance slave. i travel extensively for business and am usually up-front. i have a few routes i fly often, one is from JFK to Brazil. i used to fly VARIG often and many years ago when VARIG was an amazing airline. i was sad to see her fall apart. and i watched it happen too- painful.
so now as TAM enters STAR as rumors say, how is it up front? what kind of seats?

I have never flown Tam but a few people who work with us have had flights over from Brazil to the Uk. Economy by all reports was rough, upfront didnt seem to bad by the second hand report I was given. The TAM website for its worth, was and is an utter nitemare to use when our office were booking flights. That certainly needed some work last time I checked.

From my own experiences - those were in 2003 - I'd say that Economy was OK, not great, but no worse than others. Business, at that time, was very comfortable with very, very good service (compared to, say, LH).

My personal experience with RG, on the other hand, was extremely disappointing.

I wouldn't even hesitate a second when deciding between the two - RG is completely outclassed by JJ.

Answering to the main question:

I don't think so.

RG was the best between the best in the 70's and 80's. They were the SQ/CX/EK in that one time. A good product very difficult to be beated.

My experience on domestic flights between Gurulhos and Foz do Iguacu was that Varig was much better. Friendlier staff, better inflight service and very relaxed feeling on board with the best boarding music I ever experienced on one of my flights. Varig operated a B737 and TAM an A320.

ouch, I deliberaly took a detour to fly on their A-340-500 and MD-11 next month (out from FRA, returning MXP) hoping for a classic Transatlantic experience. What makes them "rough" ? Food, IFE, cramped seats, crabby flight attendants?
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I doubt air service will ever go back to what it was in the 70s and 80s. Seems like an overall industry trend, with perhaps a few exceptions. I've never taken TAM "up front", but from what I hear they are very good, though many give indications that it is time for them to upgrade.

There's really no reason to have bad service flying between Brazil and the U.S. considering how regulated it is.
