SYD - LHR, Etihad Or Singapore

Sun Apr 27, 2008 3:23 am

I'm moving to the UK soon and was adamant that I'd fly the A380 the entire journey from Sydney to London. Having just compared prices between some of the major airlines, I've found Etihad to be the cheapest, coming in at AUD $1030!

The pictures of the Etihad cabin look great and the trip reports seem the same - and now I'm torn on who to fly. Singapore is $500 more. Does flying on the A380 justify an additional $500?  Smile Flight times are comparable (23 hours on SIA, 25 on Etihad).

The tough part is I may have enough KrisFlyer points to possibly get an upgrade on the Syd to Singapore leg. Decisions, decisions...what do you guys think?

Well, that's two hours more you'll spend in transit. Haven't taken Etihad myself... yet  Smile

Ummm... you are aware that Etihad won't receive its first A380 until 2013, aren't you?

Does that answer your question?  Smile He knows that EY aren't operating an A380 on the route...

If you can upgrade to J on SQ I would take SQ and the A380

For an upgrade from Y to J on the A380 SYD-SIN, you need 70000 points (One Way Unrestricted Upgrade).

Why not try VS (SYD-HKG-LHR) or TG (SYD-BKK-LHR)? You can get points too!

I dont think it was a personal attack against the A380, more that paying an extra of $500 to fly on it is not worth the extra money.

Also don't count on being able to use your points to get the upgrade between Sydney and Singapore on SQ. For over three years I flew Singapore/Sydney every couple of months and not once could I get an upgrade with points. Maybe I was really unlucky but I do believe it is a very popular segment. Between Singapore and London however I nearly always managed to get an upgrade, but then that was from Business to first so maybe a little easier.

Having said that I would probably go for the A380 as it is a great plane to fly, even in economy.

well...probably flying between SIN and SYD is too short for us to fly on the A380. Yeah it doesn't worthy to fly on it in such short time!

SQ flies the A380 SIN-LHR too, so why not do all A380?

It also depends, is the $500 going to count a lot for when you move to London? i.e. is it just disposable income you're willing to spend to fly the A380 that you wouldn't have spent on doing a couple of short haul trips within Europe?

If so, then do the A380 for the experience! I am yet to do it, my parents flew it in J class and hated it during the day flights as the seat is too wide and uncomfy, but during the night flight aparently it was a really comfortable bed... how lucky if you could score an upgrade, but it's very difficult on SYD SIN routes.

If I had the choice, I would definetly go for the A380--even if I would pay $1000 extra! Its the biggest plane in commerical history and only a few are privelaged to ride it currently since only SQ has the monopoly on that plane for the time being!

Go for SQ!

I would go for EY. And as you say you will move to the U.K, I am sure you will fly back to Australia many times. So you will have the chance to fly on the A380 in the future,.

the other thing to check is the baggage allowance , I am almost certain the EY will give you more than SQ and that may mean more money in the kitty for UK prices.

- Hmm, not so sure........

I have flown both carriers, having flown both, I prefer SQ over EY, though I like the EY 345/332/346 flight combo's over SQ 744's, that said, the SQ 380 is a great plane to fly on as a passenger.

SQ's inflight service is excellent, EY's is patchy, very patchy, of the 4 flights we took, only 1 had decent crew. On most of the flights, the IFE on EY was faulty too.

My main reason for flying EY was adding the A345 to the flown log, if your not worried about stuff like that, fly SQ.
