AA ORD-DEL Vs. AI JFK-DEL

Wed May 07, 2008 8:40 pm

I am planning a trip from the U.S. to India in the upcoming weeks and am comparing two options: AA ORD-DEL vs. AI JFK-DEL. I know that the ORD-DEL flight has been around for some time and the AA service is decent, operated on a 777-200 ER with PTV in Y and semi-quality meals. The AI JFK-DEL route is relatively new and few discussions are available about it. I know its a -200LR and it seems like its a lot nicer than the 747s used on the scissor routes between the U.S. and India via Europe (which I have unfortunately done).

I am more concerned with hearing opinions about the Air India route (in case somebody has flown it or even on the AI route from JFK to BOM would be comparable).

Any opinions? So far am leaning towards AI...

If I were you I would definately go with the direct AI JFK-DEL. As you mentioned its operated by a 777-200 LR, with a complete new interior. Here is a recent trip report on that exact flight, which gives good insight as to what you might receive: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ums/trip_reports/read.main/125437/

You sound biased toward AI, already, but my Dad uses the AA flight at least once a month for work. Only has good things to say. Ticket prices for the two options listed are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Do some research and let us know which you choose.

Definitely choose AI. Their product in the 777LR is simply superior to that of AA.

having read the TR I would have to say go with AI - now if only they participated in an alliance with status FF mileage accrual....

My friend has flown the ORD-DEL flight and said it was nothing to write home about. I'd go with AI if I were you.

Here's his TR. In case this is your first time to India, I would definitely recommend asking him any questions of concern about going there. From what I've heard he's been to India numerous times already.

In Y class some people may prefer AA's 2-5-2 seating. If you're travelling alone you may find the 2-abreast seats next to the windows slightly less claustrophobic than the more usual 3-3-3 configuration on 777s which I assume AI has. I believe AA and UA are the only major 777 operators with 2-5-2 in Y class.

Well, I did ultimately choose Air India because ticket prices were lower and the TR from the AI flight made it seem much superior to AA! So I am definitely looking forward to the experience, although I do have very high expectations. I have been to India several times so I appreciate the advice offer but I know my way around Delhi  Smile

How do their on-time performances compare? I haven't been on very many AA flights that have been delayed or cancelled, but I don't know about AI.

AI has only 2 772LR non-stop flights to the US. One is the JFK-BOM and the other JFK-DEL. They currently have 5 LR's, 3 remain to be delivered. Their utilization rate is not as high, so these flights usually depart and arrive on time.

Also, i think when the 6th LR is delivered, AI might look into starting BLR-SFO non-stop, is it doable?
