AA Miles Redeemed On Complete BA Itinerary?

Mon May 12, 2008 3:11 am

My 70 year old Dad called me up the other night, and asked if he could use his AA miles to book flights for my Mom and him,....LAX-CPH and then TXL-LAX.
I told him I was pretty sure he could. Most likely using BA from LHR to CPH, and maybe even from Berlin to LHR.

But then he asked if he could book his whole flight on BA, but use his AA miles. Seems the flights would be much shorter that way, or at the very least "easier" for an older couple. OneWorld?

Is this possible?

If not, any advice I can give them? best airline, terminal changes, easiest connections? The flights would be in late June early July

I don't believe AA will give you award seats on BA for the trans-atlantic sectors - only the intra-European sectors

I've tried specifying BA using AAdvantage miles before - even asking for the BA JFK-MAN service that is somehow 'exempt' from the anti-trust regs that prevent full trans-atlantic code-sharing and mileage accrual/redemption between AA and BA, but they won't play ball

Looks like they'll have a terminal change at LHR if taking AA trans-atlantic and BA intra-EU

The only way to avid that, AFAIK, is to take a 2-connection service LAX-JFK-HEL-CPH on AY - but that's hardly 'easier'

I told him that BA, even without the miles, would be a better deal. Connections, baggage checked through..etc...
Do you agree?

I think it's better if the itinerary is as simple as possible, and then they can use there AA miles on some future LAX-JFK upgrade flight.

yes there's a lot to be said about sticking to one reservation and one carrier - and if he sticks to BA his transfer will be within Terminal 5 at LHR, as BA LAX services were in the first wave of long-haul flights to be housed at T5

after the initial problems, it seems like the most recent reports from T5 are very encouraging (flights leaving bang on time, etc.)

The only downside is they'll miss out on 10,000 accrued miles each unless they belong to another OneWorld FF program apart from AAdvantage, but maybe I'm the only one who salivates at the thought of 10,000 miles  Smile

Any heads up or tips on what to expect on BA's service on this route?

apparently seat selection at BA is rather esoteric - IIRC you only get one opportunity to select seats when you make the reservation, or something like that...they changed the rules last year and there was a big commotion about it

Then seat selection is closed until the online check-in opens and then it's a free for all to get the best of the remaining seats

Haven't flown BA long-haul in about 8 years, so I really can't be much help - 747-400 ex-LAX will be cool

premium-economy is supposed to be good value for the length of the flight and IIRC from another post here they have AVOD in all but 2 744s but not 100% sure on that one...

Not really... On BA, you cannot choose your seats unless:

1) You are a Silver/Gold card executive club member or/
2) You are booked in Club/First or/
3) You have a disability or handicap

Other than that, you cannot choose your seat at time of booking rather, you must be quick to go to www.ba.com and checkin online 24 hours before departure.
...you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you shall return

wow - ok - now I understand the controversy it caused at the time. I guess it's a good way to ensure the majority of pax check-in online and so that the airline can save on airport resources

btw - BR offer the opportunity to select your seat online at the time of purchase, but any changes after that may only be 'requested' by calling a BR agent as I have just discovered with my booking
